Need to build new MSFS system - which CPU? # of cores?

Featured Replies

Lost my system early this week. Blue screen, Windows login authentication error.  All the remedies fail to restore and the consensus is now a failure in the system.  Hardware.  Was planning for a new system for MSFS 2024. This event forces my hand now.  I am "superficially" aware that MSFS is not great at utilizing multiple processor cores.  I am not a systems person and do not know what is more optimum in core counts.  I want to stick to Intel CPU choices.

Looking ahead to MSFS 2024 what is the general feeling of CPU.  I will be using either an RTX 4080 Super or a 4090, and a Thermolake View 71 case (non-RGB).

Thoughts?

I was an Intel user for many years as I saw the CPUs as solid, reliable and less troublesome. Of late though Intel has lost its way. I think the AMD choices should seriously be considered. I built a 7800X3D machine paired with a 4090 recently and it does very well with MSFS. I think the CPU is the best choice for the sim at the moment. Enough cores and the extra cache just does an excellent job. The PC is rock solid, very fast and responsive and I have zero issues.

I just did the same a few weeks ago.  My new MS FS2020 Rig is as follows:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 7800 X3D

MoBo - AORUS B650 Elite AX

GPU - Gigabyte NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super

RAM - TCreate 64GB 6000MHz

M.2 -  SK Hynix Platinum P41 1TB NVMe SSD

Heat Sink - Be Quiet Pure Rock2

PSU - Corsair RM750e

    (1) 120mm Lin Li Rear ARGB SL-INF V2 Fan

I'll be moving it all into a new Antec C8 Clear Showcase Case, tomorrow!

So far I'm getting over 40 fps in MS FS2020 using a Triple-Screen setup (3) HyperX 27" 2K G-Sync enabled 165Hz monitors.  I have the middle screen setup in full-screen mode within FS2020 and the outer screens setup at 1920x1080.  The angle of offset is nearly exactly 60 degrees - which looks perfect in FS2020.

Here's a pic of the setup and view of the GW Bush Carrier Deck: https://photos.app.goo.gl/87kRUdS1YDxyFK4N6

My current 3DMark scores are right at 4712-ish, consistently, using AMD Ryzen Master Tool, with Auto-OC and Expo1 Overclock setting.  I'm seeing consistent 5GHz CPU speeds, while temps stay between 38 - 58 C.  I've also used the New NVidia App to Auto-Tune my GPU up; GPU Tuning +105MHz and VRAM Tuning +200 MHz.

These setting are giving me extraordinary and very immersive, detailed flight experiences. If the Post will allow me, I'll update another post with a link to download a very smooth Center Screen Viceo of the Pre-Flicght Check and Take-Off from the Carrier, GW Bush off the coast of Naples.  It's smooth and detailed - ultra HDR at 2K resolution with nearly every Graphics Option turn up, using the NVidia App Auto-Setup and Optimal Config Settings integrated into the MS FS Sim settings.

Cheers & Good-SIM'ing!

Can you reinstall Windows and reinstall MSFS? Or is it 100% a hardware issue and did you pinpoint the hardware issue?

If you are sure it's a hardware issue and reinstalling Windows won't fix the problem, I would try to figure out which part of your hardware is failing before you build a new computer. For example, if it's a RAM issue or a power supply issue, it can be rarher cheap to swap out your RAM or power supply, with a new one.

IMO, this is not a good time to build a new computer for MSFS 2024 with the Nvidia 5000 series about to come out. Reports are that the NVidia 5000 series may come out early in 2025 (some reports also had late 2024). And who knows what they will do with frame generation and if they may improve on frame generation for the 5000 series. Not only are you getting a more powerful graphics card, but the frame generation may be improved in the NVidia 5000 series. So IMO, delay rebuilding your computer if you can, until the 5000 series comes out. See if there is a quick and cheap fix to your problem.

As you can’t wait until November, I would suggest you to take a look at the 7800X3D. It’s the best gaming CPU, and it performs really well with MSFS.

P.S.: it’s not really true MSFS can’t use multiple threads. It can, it uses all my 16 threads. The issue with MSFS is some calculations are limited to the main thread and can’t be parallelized in the current engine. In MSFS’ new engine they were able to offload the main thread, taking some calculations to other threads.

A year and a four months ago, I built a 7800X3D + 4090 system.  And since then, I have never had to worry about performance, tweaking, or anything else in my sim.

You are absolutely wasting money if you buy a RTX4090 for a MSFS2020 exclusive system. I will achieve the same FPS in the same scene with a RTX4070Ti Super. MSFS2024 might be different of course. Spend that significant extra money on better motherboard, 4K G-Sync monitor, etc., stuff that will actually present a tangible improvement to your overall sim experience.

It’s because of the CPU and how MSFS relies on it just as much as the GPU. MSFS may be multithreaded but it is ALWAYS limited by CPU even on an RTX4070Ti Super with the best 14th generation Intel CPU’s.

There are well documented and rather major issues affecting SOME Intel Core i9 14900K and Core i7 14700K CPU’s right now, so buyer beware. Do your homework and don’t buy one unless you have a clear and easy RMA option and extended warrantee. In the Intel lineup, these are the only two CPU’s to be looking at for a top tier system though.

The only choice that makes sense is the AMD X3D CPU. They are hands down the best for MSFS and with the whole Intel debacle going on, issues effecting both 13th and 14th gen CPUs, every chip above 65w, it'd be downright silly to even consider Intel right now.

Basically I agree regarding performance in regard of FPS and such. But the VRAM might be an issue, especially when going 4K (or VR). I easily max. out my VRAM (16GB as the 4070Ti Super) on 4K when not using adjusted settings and the moment the VRAM is full, stutters start to occur. So, yes, it might be a waste of money but the huge VRAM is a big plus. OT: I really hope that the RTX 5080 will not be again low on VRAM...

a 4070Ti with 24Gb ram?  The RAM on the 4090 is one big reason to choose it for MSFS if it is within budget.

I have always used intel, but after researching CPUs for my new system, it became apparent the AMD 7800X3D was the best choice.  Had my new system for a month and it performs superbly with MSFS.

Don't. I was always an Intel customer up until 2020.

Not only is AMD superiour in value for money, they are currently also better in performance and their processor architecture stays compatible much longer than intels. With Intel you will have to buy a new Mainboard the latest after 2 processor generations. With AMD this can last over a decade until you have to also replace a MB when upgrading a CPU.

Do we know whether MSFS 2024 will use the various resources differently? Eg CPU vs graphic card, or use of multiple CPU cores?

As its already been repeated for enough times regarding going for X3D chips, however I want to stress to avoid Intel like the plague right now, they're 13th and 14th gen are inherently faulty products awaiting a microupdate to fix the amperage surge from oxidisation that they're currently experiencing. Existing customers who have the amperage surge suffer permanent damage and have to deal with RMA which is a toss up depending on who you bought it from.

DO NOT PURCHASE any high-end intel 13th or 14th gen CPUs with a TDP over 65W, atleast until the microcode update is out and has been verified to fix the issue. It's appaling that Intel is continuing to sell these products as is despite, being made well aware of this issue for nearly 2 years, much less even issue a recall.

*Edit

They also won't announce the SKU range or manufracture range that these CPUs affect. You can potentially buy a 14th gen CPU now, that was manufactured in the affect date range without even knowing.
