Aircraft compatibility in 2024 thoughts - not great news.

That might answer some questions on delays by FSL.....

I don’t think so. They are already years late to msfs and they almost certainly know nothing more about the sdk than anyone else in 2024.

It was an alpha. Jorg said they have been doing tests and are happy with the backwards compatibility. This speculation is pointless

But it was a tech alpha?

And specifically targeted AWAY from add-ons, etc.

Strange that this is surprising to people.

I fully expect to wait months for the good aircraft, and then pay for them.  It's obvious that there are substantive differences between 2020 and 2024; if there weren't, it wouldn't be a brand new sim but an update.

It's obvious that they'll make the simple marketplace add-ons compatible, because it's in their interest to do so.  Why in the world (and HOW in the world) would/could they structure the new sim to work with every complex 3rd party add-on out there, when every one of these devs has taken a different approach to making their aircraft work in 2020?

I won't blame the 3rd party devs at all for charging for the updates.  I like being paid for my time at work.  I suspect they do too.  That... Only seems fair.

Same reason XP12 only has native XP12 aircraft for me.

Your entire hypothesis is very Chicken Little.

V2024 is an update to an existing simulator, NOT a new simulator.

The VAST majority of XP add-ons were updated for XP v12 compatibility completely free of charge.

Yes, there were a FEW who charged a nominal fee of about 10-15%, but in exchange gave genuine upGRADES.

I think only ONE (that I know of) charged full price again, but they honestly rebuilt the addon from the ground up, and it is even more fantastic than before.

This was also the case with the various iterations of P3D versions: most addons worked just fine, as soon as the new install paths were figured out.

And there were VERY few update charges. And the couple of upgrades I can remember were for new features, AND were 100% optional.

It will, undoubtedly, take awhile for the various devs to sort things out, and I expect there to be various compatibility issues at the beginning.

And yes, a few devs WILL end up charging some sort of fee (IIRC, BBS/MilViz intends to), but I anticipate that will be to take offer functionality that didn't exist in v2020 (like walk-arounds/pre flights).

But as to your concerns about large scale expensive fees across many add-ons? I'm unconcerned.

In comparison to previous ESP sims, I think the Xbox factor will heavily weight those add-ons to be almost immediately compatible, even for complex add-ons like PMDG and A2A.

Since Asobo have obviously set a goal of maximum forwards compatibility, those devs who have followed the recommended framework will have the least troubles.

As to charging for new features, there's a powerful incentive to offer those for free: all new/future customers will expect those features.

And if you're going to do it anyway for them, it costs nothing to offer it to your existing customers.

I don't mind some reasonable upgrade fees as long as we're actually getting new features (e.g., walk-around, et al.).

Any dev who tries to charge just because "v2024", well, I'd have to consider that on an individual basis.

don't have working avionics as of now. Free Flight starts outside the aircraft and since the doors aren't coded to bring you into cockpit

does anybody care?

No conspiracy theories whatsoever. For instance, Black Box have already announced that 2024 versions of their aircraft will "ABSOLUTELY have extra charge" associated with it (directly from their announcement on social media as well as the official forum.

Were they talking about upgrading their aircraft to take advantage of new MSFS 2024 features, or doing the minimal work (as required) to getting their aircraft as-is in 2024? I'd expect devs to maybe charge for the former, but would be foolish for any to charge for the latter IMO. Some devs might only do the former tho.

And there are some devs that have confirmed free upgrades (not just compatibility patches)

iniBuilds has said every product they've released this year and the A300 will get free upgrades.

It's true. That is, what Black Box said - compatibility updates will be free so that the aircraft works with 2024. It's the true updates to take advantage of the new features that will be a paid upgrade. And yes, iniBuilds, and I believe Miltech have also stated that they aren't planning to charge.

My post was literally titled "thoughts" and they were simply things I was thinking about after watching that video. It MAY be a lot less to be concerned about. Only time will tell.

I swear, some wannabe YouTubers will do everything from engagement. Who cares if they mislead people as long as they get their sweet, sweet clicks?

No one at Microsoft ever said that third-party add-ons would work at all with the Technical Alpha. Using them was basically a hack, and people expect the results to be an indication of anything at all?

What Microsoft said is that MSFS2020's add-ons will work in MSFS2024 exactly as they did in MSFS2020. The key word in this equation is "MSFS2024." The technical alpha is not MSFS2024.

What i said before, and actually that was clear to me and it never worked any other way in all the many years of flight simulation. You will need a lot of updates for all aircraft and airports from third party manufacturers. And that will definitely take some time...

cheers 😉

Another day, another click bait video based on a tiny 'demo'.

After release it will probably get much worse with yootoobies making both "omg it's bigger than J*****" as well as "nothing works it's armageddon in the sky" videos so they can make money from both fans and critics at the same time.

Can't remember the last time I got more than about 30 seconds viewing from any youtube (sim-related) video. Way too opinionated and badly made, most of them. I daresay there are good ones out there but life's too short.

In a few weeks time we'll get whatever we're going to get. Then we can see what's what.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used
