How’s MSFS 2020?

Featured Replies

Sorry to hear that, Rob. I do understand how you must feel after losing all of your settings and everything that you have done to date. It simply should not happen, and could be easily avoided with a local backup option.

Actually, it’s never worked better than it does now! There’s been a huge improvement in the Greater London photogrammetry. Not a single melted building or structure in sight - love it!

I've used MSFS 2020 every night for the last 2 weeks, which is obviously before and after the launch of 2024, and I haven't noticed any differences.

  • I have been on 2020 almost daily since 24 was released without a single issue. Everytime you post they are messing with the servers a number of people tell you they aren't seeing the same thing.

I have both installed, but i only fly in MSFS and it is as it was before - Working just fine.

CASE: Fractal Terra Silver CPU: AMD R5 7800X3D 5.0Ghz RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 GPU: nVidia RTX 4070 Ti SUPER · SSDs: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB M.2 PCIe · PNY XLR8 CS3040 2TB M.2 PCIe · VIDEO: LG-32GK650F QHD 32" 144Hz FREE/G-SYNC · MISC: Thrustmaster TCA Airbus Joystick + Throttle Quadrant · MSFS2024 · Windows 11

Funny you should mention that.

It have notice the textures a bit blurrier on terrain in msfs 20

Since 2024 was released.

Perhaps server issues also.

Note:  MSFS2024 NOT installed yet.

Two days ago, MSFS2020 wouldn't start.  I had to do a repair in both the Xbox app and MSFS to get it to run - first time in four years
Once it started to load, I could see I was in trouble as it was asking for the location and had 😄 drive as default.

I pointed it towards the F drive where it has always been (I confirmed the Community and Official folders were there and fully intact).
Once loaded, all of my settings, controllers, cameras, even the sim settings, had gone.  It was back to vanilla.
Even my hours in the sim had been reset to zero (had been a few hundreds).
I had lost my logbook before, but this is the first time it has lost everything - devastating!  As you know, it can take a long time to set back up.

This has always been one of the biggest issues with MSFS.
Users have been asking for some time for a way of backing up these settings, but apparently they are mainly stored in the cloud, and once they are gone, they are gone.  Not sure if there is any cross-over with the 2024 server thing - can't prove it, so maybe just coincidental?……

I think that should be one of the first questions answered in next q&a, “is 2020 being degraded due to 2024”. They bent over backwards telling everyone that they were not ditching 2020 and would continue updating it, and no doubt there will be some, but I think they are done saying much about 2020. I had a glitch couple months ago and lost all of my controller settings, logbook still intact. A sad state of affairs that 4 years on they still have provided no way to back up your settings and logbook. Big brother wants all the control.

True!  Unless someone out there knows something I don't.

I know the aircraft camera settings (when they are modified) were stored somewhere in a 'WPSystem' folder (I found a really old backup from 2 years ago that I purposely copied to another drive, so that's a start), but I am not sure if anyone knows if the logbook and controller settings are also hidden away.
I could cope with that, as the interface and in sim options settings take just a few minutes.

I found my UserCfg.opt file was also overwritten, and I was back to 2k resolution, DX11 and TAA when it finally loaded.
This is a Marketplace edition.

I have no evidence MSFS2024 was responsible, it is just that it is strange this has happened after four+ years.
It looked like a complete reset against my user name (which was recognised alright).  All very strange and disheartening.

So frustrating!
I ended up re-buying MFS20 on Steam after 3 complete losses of game installs, settings, profile data, etc. with the MS Store version. Rock solid since and will eventually do the same for MFS24.

I keep backups of UserCfg.opt, exe.xml, Simconnect.xml, FlightSimulator.CFG and screenshots of my in-game settings in case I need to / am forced into a reinstall.

Does it still work fine or did MSFS 2024 cause those servers to stutter also?

Didn't fly during the MFS24 meltdown days.
Though I did a long-haul yesterday and did not encounter any issues. In fact, I had one of my most enjoyable flights ever in MFS20.

Haven't got MSFS 2024 yet - Still on MSFS and it is working as usual now. During the launch week of MSFS 2024, even MSFS had server issues with constant drops out during flights or MSFS sometimes taking too long to start just because it could not connect it to the servers. Since then this has improved - Been using it past few days. Flying all sorts of stuff from MD11, 737 max, A300 from inibuilds as well as DA42. All performing the usual as before.

Other than the first 48hrs after the other release, I've had zero issues. Just downloaded PMDGs 777 and can't wait to jump in over the weekend.

One day after MS2024, 2020, was terrible. A day and a half later, it went back to normal, and has been fine ever since.

Some minor issues I've noticed in 2020 after 2024 release:

1) Spinning "updates" circle during start-up lasting a bit more than normal.

2) In dense photogrammetry areas the loading process seems to be a bit slower than it used to.

3) Lost azure ATC speech several times. This rarely happened to me before 2024 release.

But, in general, I'm happy to continue using and enjoying 2020. Next Dec 3, World Update #19 will be released, including POIs and some airports in Brazil and Guyana (Santos Dumont, Fernando Noronha, and others).

I wouldn't know because it is always slow for me at 10-20Mbps. However, I can confirm as others have the PG of London is immensely better, and while I may have to wait for 10 minutes before its fully loads, it is much better colour wise whereas in the past, all the buildings looked like they had been burnt out.  Edit:  I don't mean they were nuked buildings, I mean they were formed buildings but just looked a bland grey black.

Cheers

Working very well here, i had some bandwith issues after the first days from MSFS2024 release but now all looks normal to me.

In my opinion, I can only recommend MSFS2020, still the great flight simulator !!

cheers 😉

I have not tried London yet (after 2004 release). I noticed a slow PG loading when flying over Torino, Italy, two days ago.

It's OK for me as well.  This week, I've flown a couple of flights lasting over 4 hours without any issues.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I plan to go to MSFS2024 next year when hopefully things have settled down, my virtual airlines recognise 2024 and my add-ons will be able to be ported across or updated.

I also want to upgrade my PC as well  prior to installing MSFS2024 - my current rig is 7 years old and is extremely reliable but is lacking a bit of horsepower.

I was flying FS9 until MSFS 2020 appeared so I can wait!
