Is Beyond ATC Functional?

don't let us talk over other aircraft comms, that's fine, but to keep removing the ability to click on what we want to say while other aircraft are communicating is infuriating and I ended up closing BATC as it had the wrong cruise altitude for me, and I couldn't ever find a slot to select to send a message

I had this issue as well using the button version, decided to use voice and is alot easier to get  in the slot. Since all  you have  to do is push the  mic button than hovering your mouse over  the  option.

Huge update just dropped. Some nice things in there, haven’t tried myself yet but especially the shortcuts on STARs is something I was missing for a while.

  • Not sure what you mean with "goofy" but, as a general explanation, canned pre-made animations that works on a single spot are very easy to be done as natural looking, because you just motion capture t

My understanding is Beyond ATC was still in the testing phase as early December last year? Based on reviews online, the software looks promising.  Can anyone share their experiences with this add-on, both good and bad?

I have been using BATC since its release. I currently run the experimental version. It adds an element of realism that no other ATC program offers (excluding Vatsim etc). Batc is still very early in its development and still has a way to go, but every update including the LLM is free. I also find the basic voices more than adequate, but when using the paid voices I only activate the controller voice model. Below is yesterday's outgoing flight to the Isle of Man using 2020, the return was with 2024, and yes, BATC works perfectly in both. The copilot you hear is FSFO. I am not a super hardcore simmer.  I configure my FMC and I go. But I need to see planes landing and taking off for immersion purposes. Don’t care much about being vectored, especially if the software has some glitches. I think it works for my objective, which is to see the air and airports come alive.

I’ve just tried it again this morning. I struggle with it a little bit and hope LLM will make it better.  For example I was taxiing for departure in the 737 and nearing the runway so told ground I was “ready for departure” and it didn’t know what I was saying.   Then in the climb I couldn’t get a word in to my first area controller.  I support it though and hope it keeps improving!!

Ground doesn't seem to understand that (unlike p2atc where it will then hand you to tower - and then to and fro you if the tower thinks you are not in the right place). Some of the time it doesn't understand where the runway is and classes it as a taxiway so you don't get takeoff clearance before you enter the runway, or you will never get a clearance to back taxi, and AI will enter the runway as you are taking off. Probably down to scenery issues, although all of mine is default MSFS.

All that said, since the traffic update it seems a lot more useable - and had less "failed" flights, success rate is probably on a par with p2atc now, but brings the added immersion of traffic. All MSFS flights for me are now with BATC - so for the OP I would definitely recommend (especially for the cost), might do odd things occasionally, but to the best of my knowledge there is still no perfect ATC solution.

It that is all you want then you might be better off with FSLTL or AIG. Or even default traffic. BATC is a bit over the top for just some live action. Besides, it depends on where you fly but my airports usually are quite empty if I let BATC do it all. I fly to and from small to medium airports with the Vision Jet and consider myself lucky if I see ONE BATC controlled plane parked. I myself have MSFS2024 airport traffic enabled otherwise all airports I visit look dead. And I hardly ever see a plane fly: I sometimes hear some communications but seldom actually see a plane fly. So if you wwant to SEE some action around you I'd use default traffic or FSTL or AIG and save some money.

It works well for airliners.... hit or miss for GA IFR flying.

Works very well for me, and it gets better almost every week. The really nailed the voices, especially the distinctive accents in the English language (French, Italian, Spanish, Easter European etc.) Flying in Europe is so much fun now!

Is there any news on when they will support VFR?

My preferred.

A couple weeks ago I even purchased and tested the FSHUD upgrade for FS 2024, but I didn't really use it much since at present BATC does a better and smoother job.

No. Don't wait for it, I think it will take quite some time.

I think it's the next big feature on the roadmap, but I'd say it will take some months at least.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

I got it and it works great. A little hit on the frames though. I had to lower the traffic to 3 from 8 because I was getting like 5 fps (slide show)

Not using AI. I think I downloaded the base pack, and use   FSLTL? Getting to know the app now. But it looks like it meets my expectations, traffic departing and arriving. It does make a difference.
