Which GPU Would You Suggest?

Featured Replies

As an Amazon Prime member I was able to order two GPU's at near MSRP. I ordered the PowerColor Red Devil 9070XT @ $849 and the MSI Ventus 3X extreme overclock RTX 5080 @ $1398. I'm building a new rig around the Ryzen 98003XD and DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 RAM and a Firecuda 4TB NVME SSD.

I'm trying to achieve 60FPS in 4K without FSR4 or DLSS. That is my preferred goal.

Hopefully someone may have tried both the 9070XT and 5080 and has some performance experience. The videos I have seen on YT show near equal performance between AMD's latest and Nvidia's. The price difference between the two is a consideration.

I am so glad that my i5 7600K powered PC is punching above its weight in MSFS 2020. I checked out the cost of a mid range PC a few days ago, and it was ridiculous

Can't speak to AMD's latest but 5080's 16GB of VRAM is insufficient.  I'm coming from 4090 with 24Gb and see close to 20GB in use off and on and that is w/o 3rd party airports and planes.  Right now in 2024, default planes only, using TAA, 3440x1440 so not 4K, but do use Render Scaling at 120 to bump that up, and 60FPS-native, i.e. w/o frame generation, is possible only in the more modest terminals, and that will several parameters below Ultra.  Our CPUs are similar but the 4090 is a more capable GPU than 5080.  If you're going this far I would def consider 4090 or 5090 if you can possibly swing it.

I'm actually very happy maintaining 50FPS-native so when in more demanding settings will drop the lock down to 50 leaving at least 10% headroom over that.  I have really excellent image quality and stability and freedom from stuttering.  I fly 90% airliners FWIW.

So here is your dilemma .. The 5080 is by default in terms of baseline performance and what you want to use the card for (4k) the better card it is the next performance tier up. However considering both only have 16GB of VRAM you re going to be needing to keep a watchful eye on VRAM utilization no matter which card you choose. So if you can afford it sure ... do the 5080 its a different class overall to the 9070 XT (The 9070XT competes with the  5070 Ti)  but be mindful of your VRAM in the sim.

Hopefully optimizations are done to eventually put this vram issue under control. We will see.

Enjoy your new PC !

I use a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with a 4070ti Super and get amazing results in 4K with MSFS2024, a shyte load of complex addon airports and aircraft.

64GB Ram and a mixture of High and Ultra settings with Ray Tracing On.

The sim looks incredible.

I just recently purchased a dell aw3225qf 4k monitor. Im running a 4080 super and a 9800 x3d with 64gb of ram. Had to reduce texture resolution from ultra to high. Also disabled ray traced shadows and set shadows to 6144 in the conf file. I use auto fps to control tlod from 150 on the ground to 250 in flight. I am able to run 2024 with 16gb of vram very well with the above tweaks.

Agreed .. Made sure to upgrade CPU, GPU & PSU in the last couple of weeks. Too many uncertainties. The memory is being upgraded in 2 weeks.

I've seen over 24GB of VRAM on my 5090 in MSFS 2024.

Same. It’s really crazy. Highest I’ve seen is 28GB with addon airports n stuff. This isn’t even at 4K

what do you use to measure VRAM in use, Dev Mode performance window? I have seen Windows desktop with lots of internet explorer windows open in the background added some 8 GB to the VRAM budget.

I am not sure MSFS2024 really needs 28 GB, even if the card is showing 28 GB in use. could be some kind of pre-loaded textures in an off-screen VRAM cache? If you had a 64 GB VRAM RTX 7090, perhaps such a card would show 50 GB in use?

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

I bought the 5080 last week and despite having driver issues I'm enjoying it. The 3x and 4x FG is a game changer, I use 3x in 2020 and 2024 and it helps make the sim more fluid.

My 3060ti 8 GB does the job!

It's nice also in terms of power consumption.

It all depends on the amount of complexity/detail you look after for your graphics settings.

Haven't experienced a single CTD due to vram starvation in FS 2024.

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

I recently took delivery of a new PC with the 9800X3D CPU and an RX 9070 XT GPU. Pretty much as per the spec you listed but from Gigabyte.

Im running FS2024 frame locked at 60 FPS without FSR4 and without any problems. You can run at higher than 60FPS but for me the fan noise was more intrusive.

VRAM is 16GB on the GPU and so far the only time I have seen it max out was using the FS2020 Pyreegue EGPF (Glasgow) custom airport in FS2024. Its not optimised for FS2024 so no real surprise.

Probably worth mentioning that having used NVIDIA for years, I find the AMD Adrenaline software much better than the NVIDIA App. With 2 monitors I can make changes to the graphics setting on the fly with Adrenaline on one monitor and immediately see the change in the sim and the impact on the other.
