I must be getting too old for msfs. Remind me, have all the previous world updates been through marketplace?

Yes. ALL of them.

Let me quote myself from the opening page of this thread:

And just in case, as I'm sure some of you still have difficulties to remember this for the 20th time:

You have to "Purchase" a World Update in the Marketplace for it to become active in your sim. Even in MSFS24.

  • Man, people were fine with FSX/P3D offering just a plausible world with mediocre graphics at its best. Many spent thousands in scenery. Today we have a sim that is giving us the world (most of it anyw

  • They knocked it out of the park with this update. I’m thankful they continue to invest resources in updating the planet’s digital twin. But candidly, the lack of gratitude and grousing from the flight

  • Thanks MS/Asobo for yet another free update, unrequested, just a gift I did nothing to deserve.  Cheers and thanks, keep up the awesome work!

for one for example expect a second France and Benelux world update before we ever get a single African World Update.

African governments are generally too disorganised and very often don't have available data.  Those that do, often demand unreasonable sums of money for the data.  Much more readily available reference data is available in developed economies.

Are you basing this off some sort of personal knowledge that you have about all 50+ countries in Africa?

We're just lucky here in western Europe and north America that all our governments are really organised....er, did I just say that!?🤣

Not sure we would ever get any UK updates if that were really the case 🙂

Flying the Fenix over Japan this morning,  in 2020, with Rex Atmos, looks fantastic. 😁

Again another country they already made... how about venturing other countries which did not received a single WU ?

I don't get it...

Maybe it also comes down to business model.    Think about where the majority of MSFS users live and then compare to where most of the WU's focus on.

Let's also not forget MS/Asobo announced this Japan WU update given they were at the Tokyo Game Show 🙂

In any case, MS/Asobo have repeatedly said they'd love to do world updates and scenery updates wherever in the world they can, as long as they can get the data. After a lot of attempts, they're now able to get data for Brazil and some parts of Africa so those WUs are coming. Really looking forward to those, and hoping they can get better data for any/various parts of south and east Asia soon.

Do you need the old Japan installed as well?

I would assume so - I  certainly do.

you don't need it, but you won't have the stuff it adds.

This is an addition on top of that, not a replacement.

So I was flying over the east side of Kanto and the town of Narita and I was just stunned by the level of detail that I could see around there. They must have implemented an upgraded photogrammetry algorithm or maybe just obtained better data there than anywhere else - but the visuals blew me away, the best by far I've seen in MSFS2024.
