5 years in, and no quality 3th party propliners?

Featured Replies

As can be seen through the annual Navigraph surveys, the vast, vast majority of simmers (that at least will do a survey) want the latest modern jet airliners only. A developer takes a risk with anything not under that umbrella. I also repeatedly see posts from many users on this forum claiming that they *only* fly the Fenix Airbus or PMDG Boeing series. It's what sells.

If talking propliners from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, etc I think our best bet will remain the PMDG DC-6 for the foreseeable future as I can't see other robust developments selling that well. I think RedWing has the Constellation too.

Regarding turboprops from let's say the 1970s onwards:

1. There was a screenshot on Reddit multiple months ago of a post on Twitter/X from Razbam (which I can't find independently anymore) noting that Razbam may be getting back into the MSFS arena due to DCS challenges, and with that was going to be bringing back their Fairchild Metroliner. I don't know where that project stands today. I've debated contacting Razbam directly about this but not sure if I should.

2. I think there's also space for Carenado's Beech 1900D to come back despite the antagonism against the company, and I think we'll see that happen in a year or two as they migrate more of their projects over (as they've claimed they would).

3. A few years ago PMDG had promised to bring the Jetstream 41 to MSFS 2020 but that obviously was broken at this point and I don't see any plans for their product mentioned in their long-winded updates. (Error, as the promise was for P3Dv4+ which never happened either. Product line dropped since then).

4. Someone on the Official MSFS Forums is claiming that JustFlight is considering development of a Fokker 50, but I imagine that's 2+ years out if they even decide to do it. Carenado also had this as a P3D-era product so we may see their version come online for MSFS at some point too.

5. Cockspur had claimed at one point to be co-developing an Antonov An-26 but I think their entire business has fallen off due to the lead developer moving to Microprose as a project lead, plus starting other side projects (Kamov helicopters) that he is taking his time on due to outside commitments.

6. Developer OctopusG is back in action and starting a classic Soviet series and has plans for an Ilyushin IL-14 but that may be at least a couple years out (with other aircraft ahead of that in line).

7. Developer PILOT'S is apparently working on Version 2 of their Dash 7. No ETA.

8. Blacksquare has their Cessna 208 coming out hopefully this coming year, which is on the smaller side but at least is a popular commuter turboprop in the US.

9. There is a CASA C-212-200 coming imminently: https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/casa-c-212-200-for-fs20-fs24.460367/

10. Not a civilian aircraft but a big turboprop, developer GKS has expressed intent to work on a Tupolev Tu-95 but development may not even start for a year as updates for existing products are taking priority (F-111, B-52, etc), then a revamp of the MiG-21, plus complications since some of their dev team remains in Kyiv and is subject to bombing/missile attacks (ironically probably from the Tu-95 at least in part).

11. Blackbird has a Turbine/Turbo Otter in development.

12. NextGen Simulations has or had (no clue on status) a Saab 340B and Saab 2000 in development but this was news from 2022/2023.

Ultimately it's all down to market value and return on investment unless a company wants to either 1) accept the loss due to it being a passion project, or 2) make something so profoundly detailed and realistic with never-before-seen features that it becomes a "must have" regardless of the type of aircraft (like the A2A Comanche).

  • I just want a Vickers Viscount.

  • I really, really hope that JustFlight considers doing a Dash-8. It would fit perfectly in their current lineup and fill a huge void.

For those who haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend checking out the freeware Fokker F-27:

Arguably the best turboprop airliner in MSFS. It's not officially 2024 compatible, but mostly works.

But I agree - there's a dearth of quality turboprop airliners, unfortunately.

Dream list for MSFS…

Also a Convair would be nice. CalClassic had many variants of it: the pistons -240/-340/-440, and the turboprop -580.

if there are not after 5 years, it is sadly probably because a 10th new iteration of an A320 would sell more than any propliner.

Just flight should stick to their classic British roots and build the HS748 and BAe ATP before the Fokker 50!😉

Yes, in the earlier SIMs, JF was the one most of us counted on for creating such classics (British or not…🙂…).

I got exposure to all kinds of Jetliners from their (early-on) payware “Lite” series. It’s so nice to see them advance to higher fidelity aircraft in MSFS.

They have persisted with us and I have high regards for them. I just flew twice their F28 (sorry, not a Prop), but it made me forget about the plethora of Airbus jets, and the ever-present 737 NG.

Yes, they can do a couple from the list above…on popular demand…🙂

Cheers and Happy New Year.

Are there realy so low interest in this types of aircrafts? The sim is getting flooded with jet airliners and military aircrafts, but still no high quality turboprop airliner. (Im not counting in the Asobo ATR, in my opinion its very lackluster in many things, like no simulated betarange, flightmodel is weird, etc...

Oh, I think the interest is there, alright. The development drama of the ATR shows it, and to a lesser extent the same thing with the AS Twin Otter.

Also don’t forget that MilViz/BlackBird shelved THEIR ATR in response to Asobo’s. So we almost had a really good one.

And there was enough interest in FSX/P3D to keep the Q400 going.

OTOH, there’s only one Hi Fi TP airliner in all of X-Plane, and that sim is decades old (so it’s not a matter of no dev having time).

the issue, I think, is that propliners are as complex as any airliner but simply not as popular. They also tend to have non-common systems, so there’s no way to leverage all that FMS work across multiple airframes as with Boeing or Airbus.

And if the FMS doesn’t work right, you end up with customer discontent like the FSS E-Jets.

And let’s face it, there’s only just aren’t a lot of propliners out there any longer. And if people aren’t exposed to them IRL, they don’t gain wide interest like the uber common single aisle jets do

So the interest is there, but not enough to pull an experienced developer in to deal with the complexities well enough to deliver a Hi Fi addon.

Are you sure about that one? I seem to remember them wanting to bring the Jetstream 41 to P3D, but I do not recall them ever considering a version for MSFS 2020. As far as I can remember, there was some discontent about them not being able to include the correct FMS unit. Maybe that killed the project?

I looked back in their forum in 2019 and 2020 and you're absolutely right. They had promised for P3Dv4+ but dropped this product line for MSFS. My mistake and I edited my post above with the list of developments. It's been too many years.

I think my post above overall supports the OP's notion of a lack of turboprop[liners] for MSFS, as most developers stated intentions but with little meaningful follow-up, though we have a few newer announcements that we need to be patient on. Here's hoping for some good turboprops in 20206!

Change log frm literally minutes ago

  • 30m

In the last few hours of 2025 we managed to get v19.0.8 done and published - you can get it over here as usual.

    Quite a big change log:

    v19.0.8 CHANGE LOG

    • Implemented more realistic fuel mixture detent behaviour for auto-lean, auto-rich, and emergency full. Custom local variables for mixture levers are: L:B24CUSTOM_MIXTURE1_SET, L:B24CUSTOM_MIXTURE2_SET, L:B24CUSTOM_MIXTURE3_SET, L:B24CUSTOM_MIXTURE4_SET
    • Initial work on performance tuning as per B24 Flight Manual - not an exact match but closer than before. Further refinement to be done after Supercharger code is implemented in a future version. Thanks so much to jjbz for the invaluable help, expertise and testing here!
    • Opening cowl flaps will increase drag. As per the B24 Flight Manual this can result in a speed reduction of “eight-tenths of a mile per hour at cruising speed for each degree of cowl flap opening”. Note guidance for take-off is max 30% open.
    • Updated engine cooling parameters, proper usage of cowl flaps is required to manage temperatures (thanks to ftl818)
    • Reworked startup logic for better realism
    • Propeller animations (internal model)
    • Propeller animations (external model)
    • External sounds improvement
    • Minor tweaks to startup and low RPM sound volume curves
    • Added startup smoke
    • Sequenced CTRL+E auto-start to follow the real procedure
    • Slightly reduce yoke vibration
    • Basic shutdown prop animations to prevent sudden stop
    • Updated .FLT files for new logic
    • Engine status in EFB: Prime / Starter / Magneto / Combustion
    • Improved fuel system logic (thanks to jjbz)

Several of the above changes were made possible thanks to lmenes who kindly allowed for reuse / adaptation of code and logic from the excellent DUCKWORKS DC-3 mod. None of this was a simple copy-paste but reusing the same approach was a massive help.

More interested in flying routes than the planes

I do not fly "routes" in the PMDG 737 and 777, but I do actually enjoy the fact that the planes almost "fly themselves". Part of the fun is building a flightplan, and then watching the aircraft execute that plan (with the appropriate input from myself when required). This gives me some time to look out of the window, and enjoy the scenery. High quality rendering of the real world is a BIG part of the fun of flight simulation for me, so having the time to actually enjoy this visual splendour is one reason why I like automated planes. I still disengage the autopilot and autothrottle for landings, because manual control at these times is more fun.

I appreciate that others like to actually "fly" their planes, but I definitely do not want to be so busy scanning the instruments and consulting checklists that I miss out on all of the visual glory outside my cockpit windows.
