Do you prefer starting at the gates or on the flightline?

Starting at the gate, GPU ON.

I start cold and dark at the destination airport. Then I don't have to actually fly at all 🤪

  • Engines running on the runway, no checklists …GO!

Gate. Cold and dark. If I don't start it myself it just feels off.

I'm at a point now I don't bother to boot the sim if I'm on limited time.

My sim sessions are usually planned as an after 8pm or weekend kickback period.

That way I can stay totally focused, immersed and not rush any workflows from cold & dark to takeoff.

Only flying the E-190 freighter these days..somehow lost interest in GA over the past year.

Cold and dark at the gate. I load fuel then PAX/cargo with GSX while setting up the cockpit/FMC, it takes about 1/2 hour to pushback and start.

I find this just as entertaining as flying.

It depends.

If I'm practicing procedures (takeoffs, approaches, engine outs), I'll start on the runway or in the air (FSiPanel FTW!)

If I'm doing an entire flight, I'll typically start at the gate in turnaround mode.

Cold and dark on the ramp (GA guy here, my planes look kinda silly at a gate!) and checklists, always.  It just feels wrong and incomplete otherwise.  Just as IRL, it really doesn't take me that long to run a full checklist and get the plane ready to go and it's simply part of flying to me.

Gate/Ramp cold and dark. Starting to learn Jet airliners and I use GSX with them. The immersion/verisimilitude is much more enhanced that way.

Always in ready for take off mode, generally at the runway threshold, but sometimes at the gate.

For tube liners at the gate or ramp with APU running or GPU. GA flights @ the ramp connected to GPU. Helos mostly at the rwy to eliminate the taxi time and start up time. If I'm doing a quick test flight at the rwy.

I start at my destination gate completely shut down. I can get 20 flights done in about 10 minutes this way!

Hacking the logbook is even faster 😉

Always cold & dark at the gate or stand. To me, the startup, setting up the FMC, loading passengers, fuel, catering etc, it's all part of the fun of simming.
