Black Square - Commander 114

Each of my landings was slightly different, which is surely the sign of a brilliant flight model.I’ve not suffered the wheel shimmy yet .. which is surely the sign of brilliant technique 😉

I intentionally (no, really! 😁) did some hard braking after landing yesterday and yep - nose wheel shimmy, bigtime. There are so many little nuances to this one. Just terrific!

Did about 10 circuits last night.

A little early for me to start glorifying it so I will not do that.
The quality of addon planes is so high now with BlackSquare and A2A and others that my expectations have become almost unattainable.

Giving my 2 cents, but really I don't have much to add that others have not already said or commented on.

It is BS best visual work so far. There is very little to complain about the visuals. Everything seems very well done and surpasses previous BS models.

The sounds are also very good and again surpasses previous models made by BS.

Lots of new work with radios and autopilot. Very interesting here. Have not touch that yet, so I cant really comment.

Everything else is pretty much what you would expect from a BS aircraft.
You know what you are getting if you already own one.
If this is your first time, then maybe yes expect to be blown out of the water. This will not disappoint.

The plane itself is a slow, very stable easy to fly airplane. Someone called it a little Sedan. I would tend to agree with that.

and yet, you can pretty much do anything you want with it with ease. Its a weird combination that is quite enjoyable.

Not sure if that is true of the real thing, but knowing BS I would expect so.

As usually already great liveries available by Tim and Ryan.

You will really enjoy this, as long as you understand what type of plane the Commander 114 is.

Very happy with the purchase so far.

Anyone notice the Toe-Brake animations 😁? Also, what axis assignment animates the mixture control? I use FSUIPC for these and can't find any that do the animation though mixture will function.

Don't know how to implement in FSUIPC as I no longer use it, but in SPAD I use the Black Square Lvar:BKSQ_MixtureLeverPosition_1 . My understanding is that normal mappings don't work due to BS's custom mixture logic. Not sure what folks using MSFS mappings do.

My existing MSFS Bravo quadrant mixture axis works fine, no changes needed.

A great plane, very nice to fly, especially landings....so far anyway, just done 2.

Not flown today but last night session I made a mental note to keep a tiny bit of throttle on , otherwise it seems to get very nose heavy in the flare if you just chop the throttle to idle. I’m not sure how its done in the “real” world

As @MorrisMinor said above, the default mixture axis works just fine with the 114.

It is using custom logic, but Nick being brilliant, has routed that logic as an output to the standard mixture axis LVAR. So no special assignment needed.

It's the same with the hardware controlling of the ALT SELECTOR / VERTICAL SPEED SELECTOR unit at the top of the panel. It's fully custom coded but for that one, Nick has put an option in the EFB; "Use hardware control for ALT SEL". If you turn that option on, standard MSFS assignments for AUTOPILOT ALTITUDE REF INC and DEC (and same for vertical speed) work just fine with keyboard or hardware.

That's where Nick goes the extra mile. He doesn't just use custom code then say "Well, you can't use hardware or keys because it's custom" - he creates a solution so that we get the best of both worlds.

That's why I rate him as the most innovative and talented developer in the FS GA space.

Double check those bindings if using the turbo-normalized version, as the custom mixture implementation Black Square uses for proper mixture operations in TC airplanes can cause issues. From the manual:

Please make sure that your hardware bindings are using the Key Events, such as “K:MIXTURE1_DECR_SMALL”, or “K:MIXTURE1_SET” to set the mixture, and NOT setting either “A:GENERAL ENG MIXTURE LEVER POSITION:1”, or “B:FUEL_Mixture_1_Set”. Alternatively, setting “L:BKSQ_MixtureLeverPosition_1” from 0-100 will also work to set the mixture axis.

Just an FYI, (and for others' info as well) as the default Bravo bindings may well have this done properly.

Edit: And while I was doing this post, I see Bill provided similar info.

And in a related topic, this morning I got the rotary knob on my Bravo AP section working using SPAD.neXt to properly increment and decrement those thumb wheels for altitude and vertical speed. Pleased at getting that done as the thumb wheels are a bit fiddly in the VC!

Sorry default MSFS users, as there's no way around using lvars for this one.

Edit: And once again, needed to read Bill's post first as there is, indeed, a workaround. Awesome!

Edit #2: However - just tried the default mappings method and will stick with my custom work as it's smoother and easier to use. Also, using the workaround, the barometer settings truncates the second decimal place rather than rounding which is more accurate. FYI.

Oh Cool. I noticed the same thing. Needs a little power on landing.

Thanks for the info 👍 I haven't tried the TC variant yet.

I noticed that about 20 minutes ago, with a cup of coffee. But of course I can't edit the post now

Everything is clearer after a cup of coffee 😁

I am using a Bravo throttle with default MSFS bindings, and all the controls are working fine as others have stated. I also have an SFS Dual Encoder for GA aircraft that I use for the radio knobs, HDI adjustments and barometer adjustments, and it too works without any special bindings for the Commander (it does have its own special software that allows it to work in MSFS, but that is not specific to the BS Commander).

Well, it is worth the wait. I think you will really enjoy it when you are able to get it.
