Externalities and the NGX

I think facts are just getting confused.. You're both right. The eye can register frames at a much higher rate, but 24fps (25 in PAL) is enough for the brain to register the illusion of motion from a series of still images. Film, yes 35mm projected actual film, is running at 24fps in North America and 25fps every where else (aprox), when you get into video and television, its the same principal (speed) just different was of counting (timecode - dropped frames so they can get more commercial time).A quick basic example. :)In theory 24fps would be the minimum for you to experience smooth motion ( of perfectly generated, images) but as cpu's are handling so much, a higher frame rate would be preferable. Bests, and great work on the NGX, personally looking forward to the 777 (ACA Flyer) but still a great plane to add to the hanger. MattHarroldPs. I do work in film sound, if you guys need a hand or anything fx mastering, mixing wise, please let me know. I know nothing of programming, heh, or how you operate, just throwing it out there.
Wow. I screamed at the inaccuracies in the above post, even more some coming from someone claiming to work in motion picture industry. There's no such thing as PAL in film. Virtually all film projectors everywhere in the world run at 24 frame/s. What you are talking is television, and there America actually runs at almost 30 full frames per second (actually 60 frames per second in reality but that is another story). The illusion of motion does not depend on the frame rate but it is based on the phenomena called retinal persistence. In film and any kind of video the constant flow of frames does build that illusion of motion, but computer games do not send a constant flow of frames to the retina. The changes in shutter kill that illusion even if it is at 80 fps or at 30 fps. Thence one game running at 30 fps may appear running smoother then one running at 80 fps because of microstutters which the brain detects as unnatural.

Ryan, any answer? My post kinda got lost in the FPS discussion.

Will the vortex generators actually reduce sound in the cockpit, or are they just there for visual effect?

I thought you were referring to having something displayed on the G15 LCD. There's no reason you can't assign things to the G keys - all those do is emulate keystrokes and the like.
Oh it wasn't even me asking about the G15, and my G110 doesn't even have one. But thanks anyways, because as long as the NGX allows keystrokes to be assigned to its custom functions and features, that's probably enough to hook them up to the G keys. Which, as you say, mainly emulate keystrokes. After all I would have preferred if they somehow managed to introduce the G keys as complete new, independent keys. Like go into FSX, go to controls, choose a certain function, assign keystroke and press the G key. Too bad this does not work unless you do the keystroke emulation workaround. Not sure if that makes any sense. Big%20Grin.gif
On old CRT monitors, you could definitely see flicker from the refresh rate even at 60Hz - 72Hz was always the point where I stopped being able to see it.
Yeah no kidding... I remember I could never run my first 17" at 1280x1024 because the 60Hz would give me a headache after a minute. Had to run 1024x768 at 85Hz all the time, filled up the desktop amazingly quick... :(sig.gif
The main reason film and TV can look so smooth at 24 or 30 FPS though is because there's motion blur in each frame.
I here it once in a while and I disagree. The Disney animation movies circa 1939-1945 have no blur and they look very smooth. The main difference between the movies and FS is that fact that the cinema delivers every frame synchronously, spaced exactly 1/24 sec apart. In FS frames arrive asynchronously and even though the fps counter may say 24 in fact this is just an average and there are frames spaced more than 1/24 sec apart. Human eye can detect this inconsistency and perceive it as a stutter.

You guys rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:( this is so great very nice job it's truly worth waiting forBig%20Grin.gif one question though when you showed us the first virtual cockpit screenshots it had a bit of a dirty look that was really cool, but when is see those exterior screenshots the plane looks on the outside so-clean. So my question is, are there going to be several configurations where you can choose from about how your plane looks? Cheers Jeffrey

I doubt it, FSX doesn't give you real time volume control over stuff that way.

PMDG should sell very large handkerchiefs with logoprint for all the...Droooooooooling over NGXeven better, towels for floor wiping (also with logo print). :(

The vortex generators will reduce noise.........in your pants.Sorry, I saw your Geoff avatar and couldn't resist. Now back to your regularly scheduled PMDG thread.-Lee Barber

I think it was so clean becaue it was the test model. There hasn't been any commercial scale grime on it yet. The actual liveries will have all the dirt.

Let's hope so because I can't afford a new 737, it's got to be used.Maybe PMDG can join with Boeing to set up a sort of certified preowned program like some of the car dealers.

Ryan, could you answer at least one one my question on the other page? Pleeeeeaaaassee??Praying.gifPraying.gifThank you!!Bruno Fontanella.

Thanks so much Robert and Ryan and the whole PMDG Crew for releasing so many preview shots for the NG and provding feedback and answering all of the posts the FS community put to you - this was a real treat and I persoanlly really appreciated you guys taking the time out to answer everyone. This forum really is one of kind for all the very best of reasons! The NG is nothing short of incredible and the quality is simply amazing! I have been flight simming since the the first fight simulator packages came out and with each of your releases you raise the bar higher and higher. Never before have I seen so much detail or system complexity with the NG and am already planning my NG flights around Australia and abroad with my ORBX scenery. It really will be well worth the wait spending time exploring the aircraft discovering all of her features! As an end note, my baby daughter loves watching the computer screen as I jump in one of my PMDG aircraft and take a short hop around Australia and its great to know that I can share my interest in flight simming with her for now at least.Well done again guys and keep up the brilliant work and service you provide to our communityBest RegardsPaul Norris

RX, as I state in my earlier post I work in film sound, post production to be exact, as yes its been a few years since school and our studies of frame rates sorry if it's rusty, I only use 24 an 2398 on a daily basis, as a sync mechanism, nothing graphically. But yes as someone else mentioned with the Disney example 1/24 or 24fpa is te perceived motion is the basic thing I was trying to convey ... Oops.As for PAL in film yes, that is true, PAL is video primarily, there is however a PAL Speed delivery for films that use a digital intermediate to do the prints, this being made in the sound dept - and yes it confuses things - I shouldn't of mentioned it LOL.Again, apologies for the confusion. Don't scream too hard.Mattharrold
