October 11, 201114 yr I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Whiskey Romeo Zulu, partly the story of LAPA Airlines 3142 that crashed in argentina. The guy who wrote it and starred in it was a former pilot of the company turned whistle blower on aregentine aviation. Watched it last year. All the cockpit shots are real. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whisky_Romeo_Zulu CPU: i7-9700KF stable @ 5.0GHz | MOBO: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero | GPU: ASUS GTX 1080 Ti @ stock | RAM: G. October 11, 201114 yr As mentioned several times before, "ONE SIX RIGHT" (and it's companion "One Six Left") is a must have for anyone with the faintest interest in aviation. Enjoy!
October 11, 201114 yr Commercial Member What was that aviation movie with Jodie Foster? I thought that was pretty good. October 12, 201114 yr Lots of flying type movies listed. One of the more recent ones not listed is on bluray - Flyboys. Very realistic (IMHO) flying in WWI from a French field. Nice sights and sounds. Space Cowboys might be a stretch, but one of my favorites for showing off my home theater. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
October 12, 201114 yr The original "Fate is the hunter" gets my vote. Movies like "Airplane", while pretty funny, are nothing more than spoofs. Another good one is "Skyjacked", with Charleton Heston. It's an oldie but goodie. Pete Locascio Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, Nvidia RTX 5090, Samsung 9100 Pro 2&4 TB Drives, 64 GB RAM, Asus Z-890 motherboard.
October 12, 201114 yr I would also recommend "One Six Right", mentioned above, for any aviation enthusiast, but watch at home in HD and good sound.. +1 a lovely documentary. If only we had aviation communities like that here in the U.K.
October 13, 201114 yr Raymar, you bring up an very good point. I hadn't thought of including "Space Flight" type of movies. With that in mind, I have to add the HBO mini-series "From The Earth To The Moon". Might as well also include "Apollo 13". Alexander Alonso
October 13, 201114 yr Don't forget "The High and the Mighty" - John Wayne starring, based on an Ernest K. Gann novel... the movie that inspired "Airplane". DJ Actually, the movie made a couple of years before that one (again starring John Wayne and penned by EK Gann) ''Island in the Sky'' is I think a much better film, although it was not as successful as the latter movie owing to it not being promo'd as much. Island in the Sky was in fact recently ditially remastered as part of 'the John Wayne Collection'' of DVDs, so there is a great new DVD version of it available with many cool extras on it, including a bio of EK Gann and a 'making of the movie' documentary, commentaries etc. One for any DC-3 fan for sure, and it's a good perfomance by John Wayne too, certainly one of his better ones. Some scenes from this movie were quite clearly the inspiration for the equally brilliant Flight of the Phoenix (and no, I don't mean the crappy remake LOL). Al I have a much older release of "Island..." , I'll have to check out the new one - I saw both these movies in the theatre as a child and loved them! I've been hooked on airplanes as long as I can remember... DJ
October 13, 201114 yr Here's a few good ones worth a look.. Flight of the Phoenix (1965) Quite simply one of the best movies of all time, with one of the best ensemble casts of all time too, beware of the appallingly awful 2004 remake, which is a very pale imitation of the original classic, the original 1965 version directed by Robert Aldrich is the one you want, the remake DVD will serve as a coaster for your cofffee mug at a push. Al+ 1
October 13, 201114 yr Moderator hello! Folks here mentioned some very good movies and documentaries. If I may humbly offer a couple for your consideration: Props for One Six Right, Strategic Air Command, Twelve O' Clock High, The Great Waldo Pepper, The Spirit of St. Louis, Flight of The Intruder, Top Gun. Mercy Mission: The Rescue of Flight 771 is a pretty straightforward but suspenseful story, for sure. The New Zealand Airlines Captain depicted in the storywas named Gordon Vette who wrote a fascinating book about a DC-10 that crashed on Mt. Erebus on a sightseeing flight, and the events leading up tothe accident. Another oldie is The First of The Few, starring Leslie Howard and David Niven. Made in 1942, it tells the story of R.J. Mitchell, the designer of the SupermarineSpitfire. It also covers Mitchell's early successes during the years of the Schneider Cup, where he came up with the concept of a pursuit aircraft based on hisracing seaplanes. The movie was also known as Spitfire in the US. Alan
October 13, 201114 yr Am surprised no one has mentioned The Right Stuff - not only a space movie, has some great flying sequences, terrific acting, a fine musical score, and of course a fun take on pilot culture. Underrated, IMHO. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery
October 13, 201114 yr Yup, The Right Stuff is a great movie, and it has a stellar cast too of course, with lots of then yet to be big names cropping up in it. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

Underrated, IMHO. Sure, "The Right Stuff" and "Apollo 13" are excellent. For pure flying see "Fighter Pilot" for IMAX; I saw it at the Udvar-Hazy IMAX theatre and the sound system and sound will literally knock you socks off! DJ
