Has flight sim spoiled you?

Featured Replies

I find myself playing less and less video games, but playing flight sim off and on for years at a time. Something about the joys of flying in the sim make me not appreciate other games and get bored with them easily. Anyone else suffer from this problem? I have a dozen games I've been meaning to play on the playstation and pc over the past 1-2 years but find myself always flying somewhere instead!

Yes, I have the same. I hardly play other games anymore. I think I bought only 2 or 3 games last year and I hardly played them. Some were nice for a few days but then I started flying again and that was it.

I wouldn't call it spoiled though. I call it wisdom. ;)

Same for me too. I love the relaxing feeling of taking off and flying peacefully instead of dying and getting stressed on other video games. I don't know if this comes with age but even combat sims bore me a lot these days. What a relaxing pleasure to fire up the sim late night with a hot cup of good coffee.

Me too ...

I'm very fast bored with other video games.

I'm too slow and to foolish for ego shooters :P

So, mostly I play strategy games - if any.

SimCity is one title I await now ... for most people similarly boring as flightsim ^_^

Same. Hours I use to spend peeking out of cover shooting or knocking down creatures with my sword are now spent planning a route, delivering cassette tapes (Air Hauler) or reading how to work a Bendix/King KLN90B.

Games just seem so much the same and don't hold my interest i.e. not enough depth or thinking needed.

Yep, I've noticed the same thing. Although, sometimes I wonder if it's just not a matter of prioritization. I still enjoy other games, but I fly on three different platforms now plus mess with scenery creation. It seems there's always something that I want to fool with in one of my sims, so I never have time for anything else!

I could clone myself, and still not have time for all of my other interests. I have no idea in the world why some people complain of being 'bored'.

That's exactly it for me. I used to play other games - enjoyed some of the submarine simulators like Aces of the Deep and the early Silent Hunter series, and I was a Harpoon regular for a while. Also tried air combat games. But my gaming time is usually late at night, and I found with those others that I couldn't come down off the adrenaline rush, adrenaline being about the last thing I needed right before going to bed. So I was sleeping badly and churning and feeling dragged out the next day. Flightsim for me is a whole different experience - mostly quiet, mostly peaceful. Of course, I try to avoid "white knuckle" airplanes - I'll take something slow like the A2A Cub or something methodical like a big transport over something exciting like the Legacy, great airplane though it is. All of which makes flightsimming a different corner of the universe for me, not like gaming at all. So if you asked me, I'd say that I don't game, I flightsim.

Haha, yep, I rather enjoy flying older military jets like the Milviz F86 (or the great SectionF8 version in FS9), but definitely not when I want to relax!

Absolutely not. I still spend more time playing other games than I do with flight sims. I tend to stay away from multiplayer these days though, unless it's sim-racing. I guess age is making me less tolerant towards my fellow human beings, especially those who are like I used to be. ;-)

Well, I actually never played video games too much, just one or two good titles over a year. Basically, I own HL complete pack, portal 2, BF3, few strategies and like a dozen indie titles. With flight simulations its a different story, very active in civil and military, and yea, my dad made a biiig mistake when he bought me first flight sim; if he bought me a cocaine he would probably rehabilitate me by now, but for flight sims there is simply no cure (nor will to cure myself).

Yep, I was just thinking about that. I have a box full of great PC games, but never use them anymore. Still using FSX almost daily it's amazing!

If you do enjoy playing Flight simulator X, Check out this flight event try to get as many people as you can involved! you'll really help..

Happy flying!

My time has been consumed by work.

As I often WANT to fly, I also HAVE to follow RW procedures. So that 90 minute flight is actually more due to "doing it right". (WX, flight planning, PC setup etc...)

I recently have been playing WoW and Tera and might even consider Rift again. I'm looking to play the StarCraft sequel and one day I'll finish Diablo...

So in short: Not i!

Wow! You hit out of the park with this thread. So true. Between work, kids and whatever else I don't get to spend a lot of time "playing". I own DCS, and love the ARMA series. I also love sim city and I am wondering about the upcoming release. Not to mention all the XBOX titles sitting on the shelf. Not only that with every year I get more obsessive with flight planning and pre flight checklists and boarding so one flight can take up a lot of time. In the end if I have to choose I will always choose flight sim over the other stuff. When I was in university I would start a long haul and then start my thesis research and keep an eye on the flight.
