[RESOLVED] The AVSIM site is very slow

Featured Replies

Tom, I can also confirm that the website is currently almost un-usable. I tried Safari, Chrome, IE and Firefox, and the website will take more than 45 seconds to load and even hang up at times where the browser will simply stop loading the page and nothing is displayed. All other sites load almost instantly. FWIW, I'm on a Fios 50/25 connection, in Central Virginia. It took me more than 5 minutes just trying to get this post in. It just kept stalling. Yes, I am aware of it.

Just a check in from another location.  Here in Houston....very slow......been like that off and on since mid-week I do believe.

Seems odd that there is such an unusual slow-down at the Avsim site. I ran a 'trace route' to see if there was something amiss between my location and the Avsim I.P., but there was nothing wrong there. 40ms response time over 9 hops to get to Avsim from the corn fields of southern Minnesota, which is quite good.<br /><br />Of course I see well over 1200 visitors have been by within the last 15 minutes, so that much traffic is going to have an impact.<br /><br />Heck, the forums I administrate (phpBB on hosted domains) don't see 1200 visitors in a month, much less in 15 minutes. All I can say is "Kudos, Tom" ... the fact this site is operating well without being brought to it's knees by this month traffic is a bright feather in your cap.

Edit: ?? Those line breaks were not put there by me. And I'm not using TapaTalk to post this. Odd.

For everyone else, if you want a faster response time, go to the bottom left corner of any forum page, click on CHANGE THEMES. Select AVSIM MOBILE and that will remove all graphics and give you a purely textual presentation of the AVSIM forums.

Yes,Shut down access for guests!

Edit, 1 minute response time.

It seems as if something is amiss with your SQL server... If it's crawling along that would explain why the queries are taking so long. It just threw up a SQL access error for me as well.

From this morning's instant access on a 20Mbps cable connection, since I last posted those screenies, when now being asked to sign, which I always did anyway, it is now taking its time with what I see as only 4 users, 1 guest. Odd, why since being required to sign-in, this slowdown.

Hi. I'm located in Houston.   I've been having problems with the site being slow for awhile now.  Some days are much better than others.  Today seems to be one of the slowest.  All other sites seem to work fine. It took forever for the site to load and then from the time I clicked on "Reply to this topic" to when the reply screen came up was 45 seconds and in the meantime I kept getting the "waiting for response from Avsim" notification. I was also asked to login which is unusual.

Thanks for a great website.  I've been using it for many years.

Very slow here -- southern Ontario, Canada.

"Even Ozzy's wagging his tail again. Liam who?"

Same slow problem here on the West Coast (CA) -- 56.6 seconds to load a page, started getting slower and slower over the last 2 days.

Sorry for the bad news Tom ... but 226 queries is nothing for even relatively small servers, think you might wanna check with your IT guys/gals as they appear to have not identified the problem and/or just guessing at the problem.

I honestly doubt it's anything to do with pictures, most of the folks appear to use other servers to host/link in pictures (me included) so that should NOT be a drain on your server.  If it were a picture problem you'd most likely just see the page load slowly (which is not the case, just get nothing for 1+ min then it loads), what's happening here appears to be more a query problem.

Some things I'd look at:

1.  Corrupt indexes (rebuild indexes)

2.  Deadlocks (very common)

3.  UPDATE STATISTICS on tables

4.  Corrupt database (rebuild Tables)

I am looking at forum performance numbers directly at the processor, not browser response times. When I consistently see execution times from the system of less than 1 second to execution times of 3 seconds, and you are reporting 20 second response times, all I can say is that the issue resides somewhere other than our system.

You'll need to dig deeper, that's not an entirely accurate metric and can also be skewed.

It's not a cache issue (cleared that out many times, no difference other than AVSIM loads a little slower) ... bare in mind that AVSIM is the only site that is slow ... all other sites I've visited within the past 2 days are performing well.  I visit A LOT of sites all over the globe and rarely exceed 3 second page load time.  Tried with IE9, IE10, Chrome, Safari ... all encounter the same performance issues around AVSIM.

Not trying to be a pain, just trying to help you get this resolved once and for all.

Cheers, Rob.

Never had a problem with speed until they "fixed" slow speed a couple weeks ago! :)

Very slow loading here.

just get nothing for 1+ min then it loads

Exactly this!

Sorry to repor that it is SLOOOOOW here in San Jose, CA. Took almost 1 minute to load this thread and about the same to log on.

Jim D.

It's.been super slow for me today since I woke up on both my home connection and from my smartphone. Multiple attempts with timeouts. Hopefully it's just a fluke deal...
