QW's Avro vs. Majestic's Dash8

Featured Replies

I had to return the QW Avro because the slightest crosswind had the ILS landing the plane in a field.

The Majestic Q400 is definitely the way to go. It's a deeper simulation and the engine management is much more fun than jets that fly themselves.

  • The majestic was designed to train real world pilots so if you want realism get it.

  • Not even comparable if you ask me, the Majestic Q400 is on a whole different level. I did buy the QualityWings Avro RJ for FSX upon its release but I returned it for a refund, such was my disappointme

Quality Wings motto is "Complexity....Simplified" so that should tell you all you need to know about the systems.

Still bear in mind that while that motto definitely fitted their first release, the B752, they have stepped it up a couple of notches since then. For me the QW is perfect when I just want to hop in and quickly take off before the VATSIM controller log off! I'd still say there is systems plenty enough to keep you busy but it won't leave you scratching your head for 10 minutes  wondering why the engines aren't spooling up - I leave that to the Maddog! :D

Different aircraft, I think, and not so easy to compare. If you wish to jump in and get going quickly (which is often my preference), QW Avro gets the vote. Great plane, intuitive, superb VC and I have no X-wind landing probs or other trivial issues that bother me. MJQ400 is terrific, much more intensive and demanding. Guess it depends on what time you have available and how focused you are at the moment of your FSX insertion. I like having both.

I prefer the QW Avro,s Im not saying the QW Avro is better than the MJ Q400 .i know the Avro fmc so can make use of it.  untill there is a Decent Tutorial for the Q400  I prefer the Avro

The detailed tutorial has just been posted  on their web  site, 71 pages

I'd go with both, but only because I really enjoy learning new airplanes I don't have a chance to fly in real life. The Avro is a little light on systems, but very fun. I say right now, buy the RJ and then a month or 2 buy the Dash 8 when they get out a service pack or 2.

I do agree that the Avro is better in-terms of systems than the 757 but then again, I think its better in every way and I can't wait to see what they do with the 787

The Avro is definitely a fun plane to fly when you want to jump in and go. I also find it interesting to look at.

The Mad Dog, like the J41, has a problem with defective engines, at least in my hands as they keep blowing up

I can't help but concur with that part. The 757 felt rather... easy, even for a "simplified" plane designer. The Avro however feels like a plane with some meat on it; not as much as a "realistic" plane designer like PMDG or the likes, but it has enough to keep you busy (or at least happy while looking around/at it) whilst looking better all round as well. The positive evolution makes me pretty excited for the 787 as well, just like you!

On topic though: I think it really depends on your preference and what you expect of the planes going in, which is really the only comparison you can make between a turboprop and a 4 engine jet. If you want the QW Avro to be a quaint little jet of lore that gives you the nice ability to get going quickly -yet give you the idea you're piloting a plane and not pushing overly simplified buttons in a game- it won't disappoint. If you expect it to be a complex simulator like the 737NGX that takes months to master and has all the official bells and whistles; turn around and save yourself the disappointment. The same applies in the opposite direction (based on what I've heard from other people), as in that if you expect a fleshed out, detailed turboprop out of the Dash Q400, you'll be pleased. But expect a turboprop you can mess around with, and you'd be upset.

Personally, I'd say the Avro because of that. Why? Because I feel that the fully fleshed out simulation is best left for the Queen of the Skies, or other "heavy material". If you're in a plane that's going to do intercontinental flights, it's great to have the full checklists and all bells and whistles. But if you're in a feederliner that usually does things like London - Brussels, I'd much rather just hop in, do a brief setup and get going.

My RJ will fly right past the ToD,  with lnav and vnav active, without starting an auto-descent as suggested in the QW quick start guide.

The Dash 8. It is one of the BEST addons which exists for FSX/P3D. This isn't even a debate. The RJ is still a fun airplane which isn't modeled too deeply and should be much easier to learn to fly however.

...The VNAV was nearly useless;...

The real aircraft doesn't have VNAV actually - Curious to why QW included it. From the AMM:

Having experience with both aircraft in the real-world, I would vouch for the Majestic over the QW 146/RJ if you are absolutely set on getting only one. It's a pity the QW 146/RJ is a little systems light - but still good fun,

Both are really excellent...and I would just get both!

I have both and, if I had to keep just one, I'd go with Majestic just because I have had some issues with QW RJ (maybe just my set-up but that's my experience).  Indeed the QW RJ has a beautiful VC but the Majestic does too and is more stable on my rig.  I think the VC on QW is causing FPS downgrades.

I was referring to VNAV functionality/prediction within the FMS, not the autopilot mode. Whilst the autopilot cannot couple to the FMS's VNAV, the FMS will still generate a vertical profile for you including ToD and deviation.
