March 31, 201313 yr OK, help me out here. In a 64bit OS, how much memory address can a single native 64 bit application have access to? April 1, 201313 yr http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778(v=vs.85).aspx Thanks, well that settles it! 64bit OS & Application is clearly the only way to go for modern programs w/ the scope of something like a complete world flight simulator. This allows for considerably higher resolution & complexity provided the processors/cores are there to do the work--and that's available now at reasonable prices, as is memory. Bring out the main board w/ 4x 8-core Haswell E CPUs/Quad SLI Titan/128GB Quad Channel DDR3 2800mhz! If not now, when? April 1, 201313 yr Commercial Member Simply because one can eat all the candy in the candy store... does not mean it's a good idea. In simpler terms... attempting to move and manipulate 8TB of data... is not going to result in a well behaved sim. Smaller is better. Really. Not that 64bit support is a bad idea... but size matters. April 1, 201313 yr Not that 64bit support is a bad idea... but size matters Sure, size matters but isn't that mainly a function of not having the throughput in current desktop required to do it? There's a huge difference between 3 or 4Gb and 8Tb. I think relative to the limits of 32bit OS/apps the hardware has moved beyond this in some ways and 64 bit becomes a way to get rid of one unnecessary restriction. April 1, 201313 yr how much physical memory can a single application running in a 32-bit environment actually reserve for it's own use? You still haven't told us how much. Gerry Howard

April 2, 201313 yr Good luck with the project. I think youll need a heap load of cash to do it and a id love to see you try and get Jim from Activesky, Pete Dowson and Someone from pmdg in a room together to sort out S bends on addon aircrafts !!!
April 2, 201313 yr All that is needed is someone to write a good ATC and Ai system for XP10 64bit and we will have our FSNext

April 2, 201313 yr I think I have a good idea of an FSX sequel. The flight sim software should be a complete OS in itself, perhaps based on Ubuntu. It should have drivers loaded for popular hardware from Goflight, Opencockpits etc. It should have excellent environmental graphics and weather sim on a par with Orbx and AS2012. It should have great AI traffic similar to UT2 or Mytraffic pro X. It should have in-built ATC like proATCX. It should in-built flightplanning tools like PPFX and Topcat. The devs should be able to work with PMDG and FS2Crew to deliver awesome planes.

Such a simulator will cost say to much for the consumer and at such a price won't appeal to those who either can't afford such a thing or afford a pc to run such a thing. April 2, 201313 yr IMO, the biggest hurdle will be managing expectations, as illustrated above. Good luck. It would be quite an achievement. Cheers Mike Mike Dryden
