There is indeed, as an option :-). Also. most of the time you aren't going to use an FSX-based flightplan, but rather some flightplan generated externally with some dedicated flight planning software, and introduced into your FMC.

Yes, but as Andy says, most planners provide multiple format plans for different things. I currently use PFPX which certain provides several formats simultaneously, and sends them to the right places. I also use the facilities in WideClient to generate plans from RC and FSX from the plan loaded and activated in the PM CDU (whether input manually or from a planner), and WideClient also gets the FSX plan loaded into FSX automatically.

Having a plan loaded into FSX doesn't mean it has to be used in FSX, so it does no harm. It just acts as an automatic way of getting your weather program set up correctly each time.

Pete

If I buy ASN, can I use it for FSX and P3D? Or I need to boy two separate licenses?

If you want to just get in you plane and have a  flight around town and don't even care where the tops of clouds are then use Opus.

If you like to plan or is a serious flight planner and not wanting to spend all your flight inside clouds guessing where the tops are  (forexample) then get AS.

I know I want ASN but this isn't the answer to my question.

That is not all there is now as far as difference between AS/Opus with this new version of AS. If they do indeed deliver on their promises(no reason to doubt they won't), this WILL be the best weather by far in FSX. Opus is great and I've used it for the past year but, they still have problems with the cloud popping and wind shifts just like every other weather engine has since the dawn of time due to FS bugs. Well, according to AS, these will all be things of the past. So, even though Opus has a simpler interface, AS will be the new king in generating the most realistic weather experience possible in flight simulation.

In the past months of beta testing, I haven't experienced any radical wind shifts or cloud popping such as I've experienced with some other weather engines. And regarding the interface, I find ASN no more complex than any other on the market (although I haven't tried FSGRW).

This sounds great!!! I made the switch from AS to Opus almost exactly a year ago and now it looks like I will be going back to AS on Dec 9. Finally, no more making exceptions when it comes to weather. Last night I was on a flight from GCLP to ENBR and about an hour to go in my flight with Opus, the winds completely shifted around. This almost caused a stall. Winds were 340/100 and shifted to something like 180/100. It was not fun to see my NGX almost go into a spin at FL340.

I still use ASE too with REX textures.  But if they can pull this off it will cause an upgrade/new purchase for me. They must be reasonably confident. Seven day free trial. We shall see.

I'm mostly interested how ASN depicts visibility. OPUS is always at 20mi (32km) unless it depicts low vis. FSGRW is 90% of the time higher than 30mi (48km), and in Belgrade is 90% of the time about 10 or 15 miles. ASE depicts visibility always at 10sm, it was predictable. So, does ASN depicts visibility like it should? 8/10/16/20km steps?

You can configure Opus to be as high as you want.

I know, but I want realistic visibility at that moment. Every single time I fly visibility is 32km, since I don't like higher (<32km) visibility on ground. I love to climb above 4000-5000ft to enjoy the view. :)

The only place where you can get ground breaking weather now is in P3D V2. FSX has its limitations in the API and there is no way around it. You can just fudge it or workaround its problems and that is not a solution. FSX has been out since 2006, if there was something new that could be done it would have been done already.

P3D V2 with its new API's is the way forward. I would be interested to see the P3D version they put out - as long as its not the same as the limited FSX version.

The P3D V2 WEATHER engine hasn't changed one iota since FSX, in fact its less functional now than it is in FSX because there is no real weather download facility included at all. The improvements that were made to that side of things included lighting and visuals, volumetric type cloud effects and true volumetric fog. The API changes as far as I understand things doesn't improve things at all as far as weather injection.

Cheers, Andy.

While it is true that the engine has not changed, LM has included a much more powerful SDK from what I understand that will give developers much more ability to create realistic weather in P3D. Unlike FSX where they must work with the included engine and make workarounds. LM will allow developers to "hook" into the program and bypass the engine.

At least that is what I gathered from reading the Q&A by LM
