DoveTail Games Buys Licensing Deal with Microsoft

Having followed this topic since it started, and having seen everyone offer an opinion, I thought I'd add mine to the mix.

I state at the beginning that this is just speculation or 'spit ballin'.

First off, I'm looking at this as a great opportunity to get some fresh blood in the hobby, because we need it. Delivering fsx to steam gives it a huge shop window that could help get new people into our hobby. In my opinion though, fsx is not the big story here. The 'can't update the graphics engine or make big changes to the source code' clause is very interesting. To me, I feel its Microsoft protecting its backside from being sued. How's how I see it. DTG buys fsx, makes some changes to the core engine and 99% of all addons stop working. Companies like pmdg, A2A and orbx see sales dry up to all most nothing. Who are they going to blame? Microsoft. So they sue for loss of earnings. Now whether they win or not is irrelevant. It's a huge distraction and headlines like 'Microsoft crushes businesses in game deal' aren't what their looking for. So by more or less locking fsx 'as is' is MS way of protecting itself.

The big story is the flight engine. Yes MS screwed it up with poor content and bad management, but the core of the sim was very good and the improved code and lack of existing 3pd developers with products for flight mean it's more or less a blank slate for DTG to work with.

For now though, fsx provides a bit of quick cash to bid up the flight sim devision coffers and gives DTG time to dig into flight, hire the people needed to develop it and get it ready for a release next year.

Finally, elitism as some call it will kill this hobby stone dead. Remember, we all started somewhere and even these days, where I can fly a T7 or A320 'by the book', I still find time to screw around with a good twin, throwing it under a bridge that's just a bit to low, or doing barrel rolls with friends whilst we fly at each other on opposite approaches. Pilots come in all shapes and sizes, so do simmers. Just because you can fly 'by the book' doesn't make you a better pilot that the guy who use wants to throw an aircraft around for an hour after the kids have gone to bed.

Not having read the 500+ threads here. Just curious how, if any, this effects 3PD? Will they have to pay homage to DTG or Steam for the products to be used in the sim from now on?

Yeah, he was looking for a fight. When you are flying 40 feet AGL, slamming the stick forward is not really a great idea.

I just had a terrible day dealing with young F/A flight attendants , you just made my day with this post tom lol

I am with those who think that the next flight sim will be based on a re-branded MS Flight.

Perhaps, rather than whole world, it might be developed along the same lines as the train simulator i.e. by adding route packages for commercial airliners. Whereas GA could be catered for by developing additional detailed areas for adventure flights and missions. Lots of potential for lucrative DLC.

I know, remember. I was the one who pointed out their EULA early in this thread. :)

Most ignore it to be honest..

I always read every line of EULA's.

And they are mostly terrifying.

The bigger the company, the more nightmarish the EULA!

They just recently added that "User Generated Content" section when TS 2013 came out..  I know a bunch of people who deleted their content from UKTS and walked away because of it..   DTG are the biggest control freaks.

I'm just glad there's a company working on a new sim/game.

If DT does a good job and their new product peaks my interest, I'm in.  If not, I won't buy and continue to happily fly my pimped out FS9.

I'm not holding my breath, but what would excite me the most is if they do airliners (even "lite" models) and have the same or similar feel to FS9/FSX with regards to ai traffic, atc, etc.

Pysc 101 past behaviour predicts future behaviour. We still need to wait and see as Dovetail got a reputation behind it. The exec are former EA people. They do deverse to be scrutinized as EA took simcity series is great example of screwing

up.

The EULA just basically reinforces that it all boils down to money. I think DoveTail will push a highly dumbed down version of the game integrated into Steam for mainly online use but totally reliant on ongoing DLC's, IE no 3rd party addon support. P3D is the polar opposite, lots of constant development and improvements but users certainly pay for it but then again they are paying for what is intended as a realistic training platform. FSX in it's current form is actually the only simulator sat in the middle and I can understand why MS stopped development and sold licenses because the only money they make is a measily $30-$40 when we buy the box in the store; they get nothing from addon makers who are the real benefactors. I'd hazard a bet that PMDG have probably made close to if not more money than MS has made from FSX over comparable periods. It's unfortunate but the EULA will ensure that we can't act in a way that will threaten their investment, the same goes for DoveTail. I think FSX in it's current form is here to stay and will be here for a very long time until someone is willing to take a risk and push out a simulator that allows us to maybe ignore their DLC's and spend it on 3rd party addon makers.

So guys here's a interesting thing. Dovetail will not be offering any product improvements in FSX.(I'm assuming this includes DLC as those in my eyes are product improvements.) They will work on fixing some bugs like the mutliplayer, but outside of that, they don't have permission from MS to do anything except redistribute it on steam.

So basically it would be the good old FSX on Steam, sounds good to me.
