December 18, 201411 yr The more I think about it, installing FSX products into the Steam version looks to need some work akin to installing FSX products into P3D. Or installing addons into FS2004, where many just assume the default "C:\Program Files\ Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9" and don't even check the Registry! Mike Mann
December 18, 201411 yr It's the addon installers I'm worried about. How will both (or just FSX:SE on its own) appear in the registry? Will the addons be able to find it? Are the cfg files still located in the same root system folders? I have so many questions, and at this point can only wait for the inevitable reports of brave guinea pigs. That's what I am trying to point out, it must have its own versions of all the configuration files, meaning installation of any addon that modifies the fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml, terrain.cfg, or scenery.cfg may have to be done manually. Anyone who has installed FSX addons into P3D knows what I'm talking about... Yeah, we'll probably just need to wait for someone to report. I wonder if add-on developers will proceed to making new installers that include the Steam version of FSX. December 18, 201411 yr For me it is downloading to: D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading\314160 Which means it will likely be moved over to D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX after it finishes downloading. Currently downloading at a steady 1.6 mb/s in New Zealand and half way finished, too bad I have to leave for work in 40 minutes Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
December 18, 201411 yr For me, it´s perfect. I had only P3D installed because i´m using win8.1Pro. December 18, 201411 yr Author I actually didn't realise it was the Steam Christmas sale until after I'd started the thread. But still, that doesn't mean Dovetail had to apply a wopping 80% off, you've gotta give them credit for that. as an aside, all the DCS World modules are also on sale, MiG-21 50% off? sit in my cart next to FSX .. December 18, 201411 yr I can't think of any addons that I have that don't allow you to change the default installation directory, and since many people put FSX in some place other than the default programs86, anyway, wouldn't see how installation of add ons into a steam directory would be any different.
December 18, 201411 yr I foresee the ironic situation developing where those who said that it wasn't worth it to adapt to P3D or have addon makers adapt there installers to P3D will now be in the same boat as us P3D users asking for new installers and help adapting their addons for Steam Edition. People need to be aware that it will NOT be a smooth transition unless addon devs make new installers! I'm not trying to be a negative nancy, just giving people the heads up! December 18, 201411 yr I hope FSX-Steam doesn't kill the Avsim servers. Yeah, we are already seeing a load increase, but things are holding together just fine.
December 18, 201411 yr I really don´t think for the most part of addons will need new installers. The installer will find FSX in registry. The problem is only when you have 2 FSX installed. The old and the steam version. The problem I see with the installers, is many will only allow a single installation, If you already have it installed in the original FSX, it won't allow you to install it elsewhere. You'll get a screen with option to repair or uninstall. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
December 18, 201411 yr Well yes, but the config files are generally located in your Documents folder, or Apdata areas. As long as the add on installer can find your base FSX installation (which you can generally specify) and the placement of peripheral files doesn't change, then it theoretically ought to be not too different than any other install. theoretically... Thankfully, I'm not one of those who is interested in getting the Steam edition, as I already have a very crafted and customized installation, so I won't have to test out that theory personally!
