FlyToronto is out

Featured Replies

I cant get rid of AI. I have all custom AI and to me it really adds to the immersive experience landing at an airport.   Toronto and other big cities have the issues because of the city itself.  YVR and SEA are pretty good size cities , but all the coastlines and mountains are what eat into the VAS alot and affect fps. Orbx PNW is stunning but the details add lots to the VAS.

But I think our obsession with FPS is the problem.  Mark demonstrated that taking off out of YYZ in heavy cloud.  Fairly smooth. So worry about how smooth your flight experience is and turn off the fps counter. Its not a first person shooter.

I agree with FT looking into the future.  64 bit will come and all these VAS issues will disappear.

Is watching a movie smooth to you?   Well most movies are running at 24 or 29 fps I believe. Personally I see smoothness even with high teen low 20s. Its only when you hit lower teens do you start to notice drop off. If thats the case, then you need to lower settings for your machine.   All IMHO.

I never thought to turn off the external model on pmdg aircraft. Saving 500 mb is huge savings. Thanks for tip

- eliminate AI traffic. I kill the UT2 process for that purpose.

Do you really like fly from/to empty airports like in Stephen King's langoliers?  Personally, I'd better skip this if it's not usable with my must have addons for real feel such as ASN, UT2 an d FTX global addon series.

Noice!

I thought you were Canadian. "Noice" is an Australian accent.  :LMAO:   :P  sorry, couldn't help myself.

I mostly fly on Vatsim. On busy airports like CYYZ I always switch off AI traffic to be able to identify the real virtual pilots :)

I mainly use UT2 for Vatsim flights in less busy regions or off-line flights.

FPS has always will always be an obsession. FSX could care less about FPS, it is has always been about "Fluidity" (such a word?). Turn the darn FPS counter off, you will only chase your tail. FSX is heavily flawed from the beginning and will always have issues that can not be fixed, minimizing these issues is all we can hope for and the rest we just live with.

Folks, you might want to try out the AI Traffic Optimizer for FSX/P3D. It's freeware and can be found on this forum. Gave me back 10-15 frames in busy airspaces (Chicago, London and SoCal just to name a few). Little to no visual impact. You will be surprised to see how many AI aircraft FS loads without you ever noticing them...

Yes I am.

Good tip, I have been meaning to get this installed.

Fps in movies cannot be compared to fps in computer animation. This has been discussed and proven ad nauseum.

To achieve the same fluidity of movies, (which include motion blur between frames) computer generated games need to run at approx 60 fps to achieve the same illusion of fluidity.

If you don't believe this, do a search in this very forum or research on the web.

I'm afraid my eyes are very susceptible to the jerkiness of poor fps. Anything less than 28 and I start to lose the immersion.

Each to their own but I could never accept fps in the teens. It certainly is not smooth at these levels. Not for me anyway.

There is a low texture pack to address VAS issues. there is a ton of options to address FPS

Could you kindly link, please?

Thanks.

Landed in Vancouver with remaining VAS of 530....the mist in Vancouver was made all the more real by my tearing up realizing that I might land without running out of memory.  Really enjoyed that flight!!

That tallies with more or less what I get for long-haul flights.

Spot-on!

AI Traffic Optimizer is a game changer and a must have for busy airspace. I typically limit my AI traffic to 70 or so and save a bundle of fps without noticing any traffic missing. It really helps to keep things fluid at demanding airport like FT YYZ.

I dumbed mine down by only selecting the animated apron vehicles, using the 1024 textures and removing some bgl files as suggested by Martin and it runs smooth. Still fantastic scenery.

You really do not need 60fps in a flight simulator. Like others have stated on this forum and elsewhere, 20fps is perfectly acceptable if the framerate is smooth. Maybe this is because I have always wanted as much detail as possible in my games and simulations, so I have become used to (relatively) low framerates?

Agree counter is not reflective of Toronto performing smoothly as it is smooth for me but fps appear low - just need to get the snow drift option working others have it working in 2.5 but I cant get it to work

It's so annoying when others have something working in P3D, and yet you can't get it to work on your own PC. This is my situation with water textures. I should apparently be seeing the reflections on the water that give the illusion of waves and whitecaps, but nothing I do seems to work! I can see the P3D waves at low altitude, but none of those reflections and "shimmering" that made the REX water look so impressive at certain angles in FSX. Above a thousand feet, the textures are as static as a painting :(
