And probably more importantly, many the commercial customers who pay the big bucks to LM are still using Windows XP or some form of Linux or Unix. I know my firm is still on XP.

Lots of firms still use XP in fact they can pay for support for it from Microsoft. I believe most of the ATMs run on XP.

My main concern is W10 itself - mainly the "phone home" functions. I realize many can be disabled and there are even companies like O&O with their "Shutup10" app that makes it easy to disable functions but I prefer to back off  a while and see how it shakes out.

I understand the logic but I just can't see MS staying with this "total control" type of approach.

What I'd like to see as a start is something like a gamer mode that disables all the background stuff when any game titles are being run. I've worked very hard to keep all background processes at a minimum in order to get the best performance - why would I want an OS that can potentially mess that up.

What frightens me the most is these forced driver updates that come with Windows 10. I avoid installing new GPU drivers until I find out if there are problems with them or not. If I have a driver that is working and giving me good FPS and function, the last thing I want is someone at Microsoft deciding my perfectly functioning driver should be replaced in the middle of the night. Some people claim you can turn updates off, but that function could be disabled  by MS any time they feel like it in another update. I think MS is going the way of Apple, it's our way or the highway. I know IT people won't like this one bit.

Agreed! That's why I'd like something like a gamer mode - my system is FINE - I don't want any hardware updates unless *I* decide I need them.

Considering the really loud complaining that I read in almost every forum I visit, I believe that MS will back off on some of these things down the road.

Waiting seems the best option - there is nothing that I have seen or read that indicates there is anything inherent in W10 which will improve the sim experience. OTOH, there are several things that could harm the experience.

Until the number of complaints about Win 10 working with P3D is outweighed by the number of topics proclaiming the performance advantage, I'm waiting too.

At the moment it's about 10-1 against. 100-1 if you factor the claimed performance increases that are nothing more than placebos.

Wait until W10 matures as an OS, driver updates don't just catch up to the Win patches but take full advantage of the new facilities (DX12 being the perfect case in point) and L-M and/or addon developers optimise code for the new OS.

That last could take some time, given where the root code came from !

Why make new technology available on an older OS when you're trying to sell a new OS?

But Windows 10 is free?

Besides, us developers want users to move forward so we can do more, right?

Times have changed, in most cases the OS is rarely a barrier for us developers to move forward.  I'll admit, I don't follow XBox One that much, it's been a decade since I did any simulation/gaming at 1080p or less.

What little I know of XBox one, phil Spencer was pretty clear that future DX12 implementations on Xbox One will not change the limitations of the consoles CPU/GPU and memory usage, improvement but not dramatic.

Phil Spencer:

On the DX12 question, I was asked early on by people if DX12 is gonna dramatically change the graphics capabilities of Xbox One and I said it wouldn’t. I’m not trying to rain on anybody’s parade, but the CPU, GPU and memory that are on Xbox One don’t change when you go to DX12. DX12 makes it easier to do some of the things that Xbox One’s good at, which will be nice and you’ll see improvement in games that use DX12, but people ask me if it’s gonna be dramatic and I think I answered no at the time and I’ll say the same thing.

Sure I'd love to see DX12 ... but binding it to Windows 10 only IS NOT going to make DX12 titles happen any faster, it can ONLY make it take longer to see those DX12 titles.  A 3-5% market share for Windows 10 considering it's free for most, sorry but that's not a great number ... it's going to take time, a long time to increase market share.  I'd love to promote Windows 10, but I've done my performance testing with it and I'm sorry to say, no significant change and the new OS really hasn't brought anything I need to the table.

Cheers, Rob.

I am convinced that 99% of the people singing the praises of Windows 10 should really be singing the praises of wiping their hard drive and doing a clean install of the  OS ( any OS) , because if there is an improvement, that is where it is coming from.

They are not trying to sell it at this point in time, rather they are attempting to give it away for free and not exactly succeeding that well so far.

Bringing DX12 to W7 would have extended the reach of DX12 by a huge amount.

Strange company MS, 10 is pretty much the last throw of the dice on the desktop and mobile for a company that is rooted in the last century and has missed the boat by a large margin on every tech advance since the late 90's.

Just like every other os release, a bunch of people whining about how bad it is, all of whom will end up using it and whining about how the next new os isn't as good or doesn't bring anything new.

This thread is supposed to be about prepar3d v3. Can it stay that way? I keep coming back and seeing new posts in the thread only to open it and find more off topic ramblings.

It seems there is a whole forum section for whining about whichever flavour of Microsoft you don't like further down the page.

Chris - I totally agree with you.  We need the thread to be about P3Dv3

Rob can you spill some beans about p3dv3 like you happen to take a picture of your desk and low behold in the background is P3Dv3 running (I assume you are testing it "supposedly", that way you are not breaking any NDA and wink wink we all win then :P .  Because we all want to see pics of your desk

Be careful where you say that Bob! :) I did so in another forum and was quickly pooh poohed as not knowing anything about OS. Didn't matter that I wrote my own almost 30 years ago. LOL

Most of the performance complaints I hear about FSX/P3D I believe could easily be resolved by refreshing the OS.

I understand everyone's caution with Windows 10. Trust me, I would be in your boat, but my situation was just timed this way. I built a new CPU a month ago. I use my computer for 2 Major things. Pro Tools HD for music production (work) or P3D for my hobby/staying on my toes while I wait for my Aztec to get finished with overhaul...only 2 weeks until pick-up!!

Anywho, it just wound up me in full-on Frankenstein build mode. I installed every version of Windows multiple times and threw the insider build of Windows 10 in the mix. I noticed the improvement from 8/8.1 immediately (I have been on the Mac side of the fence for a couple years so 7 wasn't really an option). I had the drive, time and definite need to build the best PC/Hackintosh possible. Luckily I've been building computers since I was 15. My first move with any Windows install is a COMPLETE SWEEP the control panel. I'm talking every page. I must say it's definitely different, but the Windows Update thing that everyone is turned off about is a very easy to find option. Hit your Windows Key, start typing Windows Update, click it, click advanced (always) and change automatic to notify of download. It is finally in front of me.

(Trying to sound like Tom Skeritt in Top Gun)

Gentlemen, it's glorious. Asus X-99 MB, i7-5820K OC'd 4.3, 32GB 2400MHZ, STRIX GTX980Ti 6GB, (2) 500GB Samsung 840 SSD HD, (2) Windows 10 installations, 48" Samsung Curved 4K 3DTV (nVidia with 3D vision in P3D...whoa...good lord), 1 Dell 27" Screen in portrait mode as a wing for my Samsung.

I'm not discrediting or faulting anyone's decision, trust me, I know how you feel. I've done probably 3 clean installs in the past 2 weeks. All I'm saying is that it really is much nicer than any windows in my recent memory. Way less instrusive than 8/8.1. I felt like 8 was in full control, asking way too many questions.

Kind of the opposite of Mac OSx Yosemite, at least in the questioning field. Yosemite installed and took over. Typical Apple. "Hey you know that program you use on here A LOT? Well, sorry, we changed the options and you can't do that anymore...sorry...but check out our new MacBooks!!! SO THIN!!!"

So think of me as Scout...and I'm saying I've had zero problems since major release. What you do is totally your call, do your thang chicken wing. I'm also saying...use only SSD Hard Drives. Why not buy a 250GB SSD at BestBuy and throw Windows 10 and P3D on there and try it out? Still way less involvement than trying to get FSX to it's sweet spot...when it should've already been there. If you do it and wanna throw your computer out of the window, no biggie. Return the hard drive and let it rest until you're comfortable. I'm just expressing my excitement because I've been doing that for years on here...I don't need to explain myself...LOL

Oh, about P3D V3...good lord I've had 2.5 for a couple months...she's got me by the heart. It was like breaking up with a girl you really liked but never got her to slow down on the drinking (FSX) and found an even hotter chick with way less problems and awesome immersion (Cockpit shadows). Score!! Wait...she has a sister moving in sometime soon who's even hotter?! (P3D V3) It is very easy for me to make an OOM happen in P3D because my FPS is pretty much un-affected. KJFK with full-sliders goes to OOM in about 1 minute (PMDG NGX, NY Airports X, UTUSA, GEP3D, MyTraffic 6, REX). Heck, give me a 64-bit V2.5 and I'm bouncing off the walls with happiness!

xMas...pleeeasssseee Santa?! I just wanna look at the present, I swear! (Come on...one shot!)

Lots of firms still use XP in fact they can pay for support for it from Microsoft. I believe most of the ATMs run on XP.

Most ATMs ran IBM's OS/2 for years and years.
