But they are 3D clouds and no 2D billboards which turn in your direction when flying around them ... (that sucks :Tounge:).

There's definitely pluses and minuses to XP10 clouds!

As well as with FSX/P3D clouds. As I pointed out in a different thread (complicated to link via smartphone) such discussions can be end-, but also fruitless.

Yep..................XP-10 water is the best.  I've seen numerous complaints, that are not what I see on my system at all.

Ah, interesting. I didn't know that. Thanks.

It is evident how different XP and MSFS's lands are - In FSX's, the top / reference developers are PMDG, A2A...

In XP, as I believe Tony pointed out, there is yet no reference. PMDG entered the XP territory with their DC-6, but there's no hype about it as there is in FSX's and derivatives land... They're just another developer.

Is this good ?  For me it's great, meaning that there is potentially good stuff coming from many sources, being it freeware or payware.

Scenery wise it is even more of a difference, since most excellent offers, starting even with the updated default airports, are FREE! When I think how much I would have to pay to have the same coverage in FSX, I know I can't but feel happy to have a very plausible database of World airports presently available, with more or less up-2-date data, certainly much more than default FSX / P3D.

Hi Howard,

There are many cloud sets available for X-Plane. Some are better than others. Aerosoft offers Sky Tools (free) with many different clouds and sky textures. Then, there's Skymaxx Pro v3, a payware cloud engine which offers great variety of cloud depictions.

The only limitation is XPX itself and the lack of cloud types, so you get lots of repetition in the clouds themselves (at least with the free ones).

An example of the ones I'm presently using which are free;

Although in X-Plane you can't reach the best cloud visuals obtainable in FSX/P3D, clouds can be improved quite significantly with various tweaks. Here's an example:

I can highly recommend those tweaks. I mixed it with some adjustments in RTH and now the clouds look very good. Not as good as AS16 in P3D but much better than what you get out of the box.

My view on X-Plane: I just bought X-Plane because of the IXEG 737 and I really like it. It offers A LOT of very nice freeware content for which you would have to spend a fortune in P3D. The night lighting is exceptional. For me the performance is very smooth. Flying the IXEG at night is very immersive (even more than flying the PMDG NGX in P3D). Would I see at a replacement for P3D? No. P3D has so many great add-ons which I would be missing in X-Plane. I just run them side by side. Since I bought X-Plane I often check if there is a nice freeware airport if I want to fly a specific route. If there is, I fly it in X-Plane instead of buying an add-on for P3D. In other cases, e.g. if I want to fly the 777, I go to P3D...

I'm really interested to hear if anyone has moved from good old FSX to Xplane and what are your thoughts and opinions.

Hello there,

I moved from FSX to X-Plane a couple of years ago, then to P3D, back to XP and now I use both (XP and P3D), this hasn't been easy on my wallet :)

My thoughts;

FSX/P3D just have that many more professional developers making high quality add ons and hence in terms of immersion and eye candy, they win in many aspects. While you can make XP looking almost equally as good (besides night lighting) it does require more time and effort and esp if you want to implement some of these eye candy yourself (like Ortho4XP).

I usually fly GA in P3D almost all the time as it's considerably better for low altitude VFR flying (with add ons), Airliners are about 50/50, the thing I absolutely love about XP is that I don't have to worry about VAS issues and I also do prefer the flight model.

Although I'm currently using P3D a lot more these days as I recently purchased AS16 and I did a dawn flight from KSFO to KLAX, I had to pause the sim and just look in awe at the clouds, sky and sunrise, it was just amazing and something I will probably never see in XP.

So in a nutshell, I currently use both Prepar3d and X-Plane.
