Display Resolution

Featured Replies

I am curious what display resolutions most people are using in P3d and within your display manager that gives the best combination of performance and visuals. What pc specs do you have while using these settings?  I am using a 1440p Quad LED display that is curved and 34" and I'm trying to get the best of both worlds.  My GPU is a 1060 Thanks!

I'm still at 1080P GTX 970 here. I seem to run out of vram on P3D and xp11 from time to time

1080p on a GTX 1070 - wouldn't mind going to 1440 but not sure how the 1070 will take it.

You should add a poll!  When not in VR I'm running at 27" monitor at 1080p with an EVGA GTX1080, perfectly happy.

You already have the best of both worlds :) 1440p is the best performance/visuals relation resolution that we can have.

if you go 4k the differences are not that much for our weak human eye, the biggest difference is that you have bigger screens available, on the other hand you'r going to get a kick in the balls regarding performance.

BTW i use 4k for simming but not for general gaming.

I run a 27" 2560x1440 on a 6700K with a 1070 and if there's a bottleneck, it's the 6700K...1070 is fine as long as I don't run TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10 - (1070 will hit 100% memory usage). Rarely do I see GPU usage above 50% -60%, and it's usually lower.

After running 1440p I would not want to go back to 1080p. I've considered 4K, but my sim computer is used for other things, and I didn't like what I read about text scaling, etc. with 4K.

IMO, the GTX 1070 is a bit too weak for my 1440p. I am waiting for the next NV card with at least 12 GB VRAM.

Harry,

I'm curious of the situation that causes you to exceed 8GB memory usage with the 1070?

In my experience, the only case that would cause my 1070 to even approach memory saturation was setting TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10. I can't tell the difference between TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=10 or TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9 (which is achieved either by an explicit TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9, or with no explicit setting + selection of "use high resolution terrain textures" under the "Graphics", "World" tab. Using TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9 I have never seen the 1070 memory usage above about 3GB-4GB.

My suggestion, if you're exceeding 8GB would be to remove any TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP= declaration (which is a default of TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8), and just select "use high resolution terrain textures" for an effective TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9. I do it this way so I can easily switch back and forth between 8 and 9 without having to restart the sim. I use 8 at night when I can't see high res terrain in the distance, and 9 for daytime flights when I can see the terrain at a distance.

For a clear explanation about all this see Beau Hollis post here:

BTW, how do you like that i7-7820X...bet it's nice having all those cores for autogen/texture loading?!

Kind Regards,

Kind Regards,

The 1440p resolution still needs additional AA (4xSSAA, preferable 8xSSAA) do avoid shimmering/flickering particularly at night together with DL and/or Dynamic Reflections. I know, that's not only VRAM bound, but from my understanding, the 1070 is too weak for these settings.

Yes, the 7820X is a bummer coming from 3820, though I had to de-lid it for high o/c. I always preferred HED boards with quad-channel memory.
