Major developers shelve P3D development

Yes , clouds and WX are light years ahead.. Lets hope that the new sim can PROPERLY simulate a typical PNW winter day ( like rain rain and more rain , 100% CLOUD COVER to FL290) no more 2003ish era cartoon clouds, and without needing a Nvidia Super Iron Man Titan 3080TI  32GB or a I9 running at 6.0 GHZ

Don't get me wrong. I am still hoping to get my hands on the Alpha and if not I will still be buying it probably within a very short time of release if not day one. But I will definitely not be disappointed. I won't be saying, 'this is not as good as I expected it to be'. And I am not suggesting that anyone in this thread will be saying that. But what I am suggesting is that the hype is such that the cry of 'this is not as good as it was hyped up to be' will be heard all over the internet. 'Flight' for what it was wasn't bad and the only reason it was cancelled was all the negative publicity. There was no technical reason that the development of Flight could not have continued. But having said all that I'm confident Microsoft Flight Simulator will be a success but I also think that P3D V5 if its not the professional version, identical to Microsoft Flight Simulator, will compete well with it. And there will be a 'which is better' debate in this community, MSFS or P3D V5 (again if they are not identical). Just like there is currently between XP11 and P3D V4. Don't forget there is one big test that both P3D V4 and XP11 have passed that MSFS has not. They have both been affirmed by the market.

OK. So who the hell cares? After 39 years of simming I've learned that things are what the are. Deal with it...............

Like DJJose has shown again : pr scenery + custom AG looks very realistic.

This is what's exciting! The idea of having new aircraft, new weather generator, beautiful photo sceneries with lots of AG, mesh, and maybe an ATC system that at least allows me to use it for VFR operations. Come to think of it, I have all that right now. 😀

MSFS

Why do we have to choose?

Three simulators in the market. P3d, xplane and soon fs2020.

Vanilla coconut and chocolate.

Patience is key in evaluating the future of flight simulation. Veterans will remember the various iterations that have been produced thus far and many will see the future as bright whether your preference is X Plane, P3D, or FS 2020.

Many already run multiple sim platforms on the same machine and it's doubtful that will change much...😊

I see no where that forces anyone to give up current sim and must support the brand new shiny one on the horizon. That said, hobbies always progress and are never cheap.  But if we didnt move on with progression, we would still be using CRT monitors and watching movies on VHS tape rented from Blockbuster.

I will keep P3D around simply because the new sim will take quite a while to have a thriving eco system of supported aircraft and the like.  We dont know to what extent airports will need upgrading, but it seems that porting over is doable given that there is some backwards compatibility. Whether that would be a detriment or not relative to a native product remains to be seen but it is the cost of moving on with the next gen of technology. Your mission should you choose to accept it....

LR already announced new weather engine, can't discuss LM.

Wait!!!.......Are you telling me that with all the shinny balls that MS marketing is throwing in to the air the poor guys at LM are still going to work and getting paid? I guess no one told them the news about the "Sim of the Gods". I do hope that LM has some back up plan. You sir are connected, so maybe suggest to them that they could produce oh...I don't know....Hula Hoops or cookware when the "Sim of the Gods" arrives on earth orbit.

Is this wishful thinking?

Well, I did say "I believe". Granted I am speculating just like everyone who has no insider info. But MS/Asobo did tacitly suggest that Current FSX/P3D aircraft would work in the new sim. They said that there would be a legacy mode and particularly referenced flight dynamic. So I'll take it all the other aspects of an aircraft like VC, exterior, other views, systems etc. will work in the new sim. Exhibit A is PMDG's NGXu and the promised NG3 for MSFS deal. I've never really seen PMDG as being particularly charitable so I'll read a little into that. 😁

Ever since I saw the first MSFS promo video a few months ago I saw something that made me think this is still FSX with some new way of generating autogen that won't bring highend systems to their knees. Perhaps it will won't that be fun.

What would be hilarious is if LM had hooked up with Google years ago to use Google Earth data for procedural generation of scenery in Prepar3D V5.

Now that would be a spanner in the works!🤣

I had this same thought a couple of months ago. Why would Lockheed Martin continue with P3D when they can have access to what certainly seems to be at this point a much higher quality platform with substantially greater fidelity.

Lockheed Martin's objectives may well be quite different from what MSFS promises to bring..  Time will tell..

From all the videos I’ve seen it’s like we are moving on from the IBM black and green screens to QLED.

All the pessimists are having a field day.

Waaaaay to much negativity in this thread from people who should know better.

MSFS is promising a generational leap forward in functionality, not just visuals.

The good news is just how open Asobo and Microsoft have been with the development process. Anyone not (yet) involved with alpha testing has a very good idea of what the sim is like currently, based on the screenshots, video clips, media reporting and even the test report by a simmer at November's XO19 show.

The downside will be the lack of availability of large numbers of quality add-ons in the months after the new sim launches. There will be no apples-to-apples comparison possible between MSFS and P3D as I doubt (apart from the odd exception) that your favourite payware airliner of choice, nor your high-end payware airports of choice, will be ready from the get-go.

On the flip side of the coin, P3D, XP11, and even FSX, are mature, established sims with huge catalogues of add-ons, built over a period of many years, that gives simmers a vast array of choice in how they interact with, and how they choose to make it look in, their current gen preferred sim(s). For the more discerning simmers, these purchases form a sim experience that they won't necessarily be able to re-create in the new sim immediately.
That said, a large number of these add-ons will be rendered obsolete by the capabilities native to MSFS.

Getting the thread back on track, add-ons for current sims such as P3D are going to continue to be developed in the short-term. These projects are already underway and 3PDs need cash flows to keep them going until they can start selling add-ons for MSFS.

Medium-term, we will see a slowdown in the number of projects for current gen sims being announced as the numbers of purchasers for them falls.
It's a process that has happened many times before, as the majority of simmers migrate to the next big, shiny and more capable sim, and it will happen again - just not yet.

Funny to see the P3D folks now saying the same thing the FS9 folks were saying years ago...   I have thousands invested, I have a stable platform, I'm not moving, why don't people keep developing for FS9...

Change FS9 to P3D and it's the same conversations 10 years later LMBO

Hi Paul!

Yep...no one has to abandon FSX or P3d.  Just as we didn't leave Fs9 when FSX came out.  FSX was great sim but it took a long time to mature.  Anyone remember the demo?  Can you say frame rate nightmare lol?

Btw, you all have seemed to forgotten that back when FS 2002-FSX days, PC’s CPU were almost doubling year on year P40 to 120, 333 to 600 in a year.

PC now are going at a snails pace compared to the times you are all taking about.
MSFS is build for now or next year so will we not see cpu@6/7/8. All that rubbish from times gone by. You all seem to have forgot that.

Back in FSX days a one year old PC was not good enough that’s not the case anymore with modern games/PC.

I still run P3D on a 5 year old PC, a five year old PC when FSX come would have properly been a 385. FSX Probably would not have even started.

Times have changed. So should your thinking.

Back in the day............
