Advise choosing the right rtx 3000 gpu

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I have a 1080ti at the moment with a i9 9000 cpu.

I am thinking of up grading the gpu.

I have a dell 32 inch 1080 monitor.

Despite doing a reasonable amount of research I am not sure.

Not sure if the 3090 is worth the price tag.

I would be grateful for any suggestions between the 3 rtx's...rtx 3070. rtx3080 and rtx3090.

Many thanks.

Qas

If you staying with 1080p I would suggest 3070-3080, really don't think a 3090 is needed for 1080.

I got a new PC 2 months ago and stepped up to 1440p and that and the 3080 seem a sweet spot. 4k needs a 3090. But if you can afford a 3090 go for it, but I got a 3080 and a G7 for the cost of 3090. Your money enjoy what ever you get.

@rwy12

Hi

At this time, for a 1080p monitor, I don't think you need an RTX30XX, the GTX1080TI is still a very good option.

I leave you here some reviews about the RTX3060TI, 3070 and 3080.

the performance difference between your 1080ti and each of these gpus is:

1080ti vs 3060ti: +15%.    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3060-ti-founders-edition/

1080ti vs 3070: +23%.     https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-founders-edition/

1080ti vs 3080: +33%.     https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-founders-edition/

Also the prices of the RTX30XX are too inflated and there is little stock in the stores, it is not a good time to buy, hopefully in spring the situation will change.

what Nyxx said, 4k = 3090

and if you plan VR go for the 3090 too,

otherwise a 3080 or less.

(this is not a recommendation to buy, just my opinion 😉)

The big advantage of the 3090 is all that VRAM but at 1080p you probably do not need it.

To be honest at 1080p even a 3060TI may be good enough, though by all accounts a 3060 would be more of a side grade with bonus ray tracing capability rather than an actual upgrade from a 1080ti.

At 1080p you definitely do not need a 3090, though if you are likely to upgrade your monitor in the near future it is a safer bet if you have the cash.

I got a 3080 running and i am very pleased with it. Of course if i was willing to spend the extra bucks i'd buy a 3090 too but i chose not to and see what AMD is coming up with in the future.

I assume this is not much of a decision help is it? 😄

Planning on running at 1440 and I recently got the 3060 Ti while it was in stock instead of a 3070.

I haven't started using it yet but it sounds like it's a solid choice for 1440 — not incredible though — but should hold up 1080 very nicely if you do want to upgrade for some solid features but without spending too much in your case.

Personally, if all of these cards were in stock I would get a 3070 or 3080, but that's a different story I suppose.

Best regards, happy flying,

Wallace

Get a card w/ as much VRAM as possible 16GB Min...!!!

Trust me once this sim goes DX12 you will regret not having enough VRAM...

Just look at P3D forums for complaints regarding CTD's after it went DX12 and users ran out of VRAM!

It really depends on your monitor resolution and upgrade ambitions for other components. A rough guide for high to ultra settings (at 60FPS)... 1080p 3070, 1440p 3080, 4K 3090 (45FPS).

MSFS requires an equal dose of CPU and GPU so spending a lot on one without the other is just going to shift your bottleneck

If you can wait another month or so, there are likely to be more choices with cards that have more VRAM. But this may not be relevant depending on your resolution. 4K really requires 10-16GB in my opinion, and lower resolutions likely don’t need more than 6-8GB.

I think it would be smart to choose a GPU you could keep when upgrading your monitor. I'd recommend an RTX 3080, but they're very difficult to get hold of. If you're planning on staying with the current monitor, an RTX 3070 would be more than enough.

I chose a 3070 on the basis that I was only running at 1080 on a 24 inch monitor. had I been looking for 4k, I would have gone for the 3080 (plus a new PSU to power it). The 3070 is so far fine for me, but it will be interesting to see how it goes after I upgrade my CPU in January to a 5600X

RTX 3070 is good enough for 1080p, but i had choose an AMD 6800 XT instead, that card is more future-proof as it has more vram.

The 6800XT is the card I've more or less decided on unless in the meantime Nvidia bring out the 3080TI around the same price point as the 6800XT, with me now having a 4k monitor, I think this will give me more value, but I may have to wait until early next year until the prices come down to around MSRP, hell I've waited about 2 year for these next Gen GPU's to be released, so another 2 to 4 month won't hurt. What I save in not paying over the top prices can be put to a better simming use.

Has anyone tried to install RTX 3090 on i9-10900 with PSU 750W?
