LOD Popping and Stutter when Camera Panning

do not lock your fps in nvidia. Thats why the bar was red and your gpu only being used 45%. The sim is gpu bound so it should be working 100% of the time. When your gpu is working less, thats when you have problems. The way I told you how to do it is the correct way with a gsync monitor. If you notice now your are in the green and it should stay green even if the fps goes down. Thats the beauty of the gsync monitor and shows that its working

Well for me if i turn vsync ON insim, my bar becomes fully red (when OFF it is fully green)… ryzen3900x, rtx2080ti, gsync compatible samsung at 1440.

So WU6 has been delayed till the 7th. They did post some more info on the notes:

-“Offscreen terrain pre caching” graphics settings has been added (Low, Medium, High and Ultra). If set to Ultra, all the offscreen terrain will be cached at full quality which will reduce FPS drops and LOD popping when panning the camera but may impact overall performance -Maximum photogrammetry draw distance has been further increased. As a result, photogrammetry of downtown building areas will be visible from farther away -Cities at night are now more visible on the World map.

Will that put more load on GPU or CPU or both? Also should we expect a BIG drop in performance if set to ULTRA? What your your thoughts?

This is the slider that many have asked for.. yes, I would expect a performance impact if you select ULTRA... You will be able to test it yourself Sep 8th.. 🙂

I would expect GPU but I might be wrong, 7th of September is not far to test this out ;).

Would it be just using more VRAM?

Hopefully, might use some of this 24Gb up!

No.  Loading high resolution data uses CPU power..

I've been tinkering with my options.cfg having read this thread and I've settled (for now) on a LOD of 3 and a Terrain LOD of 6 on my system.  It struggles a little with that (FPS mostly mid 30s but drops below 30 on occasions) but for the first time since SU5 I have a sim that looks amazing again.  No popping trees and no blurry distance.  I've tried it over several environments including PG and it seems to work with no stutters.

I might just try a LOD of 2.5 to see if it makes it a little easier on my system but so far so good.

Also Internet speed and connection..   no matter how powerful your CPU is or how much RAM you have.. if your internet connection isn't getting the data fast enough to support the hardware, you are going to see popping, stuttering and bad graphics and possibly texture issues.

Whilst I applaud this slider, it's going to be another major problem for people who are attempting to run this sim beyond the capabilities of their machine and connection as I am sure many are already doing.

I do think, however, that it will make the Rolling Cache more needed at higher settings, so it can help reduce the amount needed for download at any one time.. but of course, that doesn't help the first flight in any particular area.

PS.. Before people start complaining about bandwith issues...  it doesn't matter if your connection to your internet provider is 765,000 Gigabytes per second,  its what is the slowest speed across the route that's important and will limit the data you can download in time for the sim to render it..

It's not loading high resolution data though is it? It is merely a slider so that objects appear further out?

Well thats my limited understanding of it.....

I see this as the FOV slider they talked about.

Working back..Ultra will give 360, So how much the drop is per setting we dont know, but since I dont need 360 more like 220ish range it might be High.

Even with 360 it should still be faster than SU4 because the glass cockpit are no longer on the main thread.

Hi, if someone can advise how to set LOD of 2 and Terrain LOD of 6 in the usercfg.opt file please?

Yes, just doh le click the file and it should open in notepad.  There you will find a list of parameters relating to your sim.  Find the two LOD ones and just change the numbers and press save.
