So no freeware for me, its to time consuming to check for updates and all those annoying libraries that comes with them. (except the HN shipping AI, its a must have). Could you tell us more about your one must have freeware - HN shipping AI.???? Regards, Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .

January 26, 20224 yr The way I go about things is just spend a couple minutes checking updates for mods I will be using. For example I only update the A20N when I take it out of the hangar not every day. And for scenery just a quick search for my departure and destination to check for any good downloads. Doing it like that keeps things relatively short for me so I don't spend too much time. If I want to browse though that's a different story. This sim has a plethora of freeware it blows my mind. Could get lost for days just browsing. P3Dv4 + XP11 MFS
January 26, 20224 yr Finding new add-ons and testing is as much fun as refresher training. 😀 I keep all my add-ons in different folders and only enable the region I want to check out. I update only what needs to be updated. Recently I added AIG and I'm still adding airliners. It's fun and rewarding! MSFS

January 26, 20224 yr Reminds me of my long ago deceased father when television was in its infant stages. He constantly tweaked the controls, bought new antennas and tried many other things to improve the picture and reception. He hardly ever watched TV. Are we doing the same thing with our flight sims? January 26, 20224 yr My primary 'add-on' is Nikki, my 10y Pomeranian: she gets added-on to my lap--Dog is my CoPilot, at least for the first flight of the day which is at the crack of dawn while wifey sleeps in. Today we left Kastrup for Paris in the quite decent 787X HD. I cherish keeping 'maintenance' down to a minimum myself. Been there did that for decades w/ FSX then P3D as many here did. I have purchased I think 7 airports now all but 2 from the Marketplace which handily tracks updates so easy peasy there. 3 of those are uninstalled because quite frankly the performance penalty was not worth the enhancement (LVFR KSAN just heinous in this regard). I have no payware planes yet as I'm waiting dutifully for the NG3 from PMDG. I do use the Heavy Division mod for the 787. I bought Simple Traffic because I didn't want to deal w/ installation and maintenance of AIG and am going to wait and see what MS/A does w/ live traffic development. Clearly AIG proved it's all very doable. I did buy Bijan's scenery package for fall colors and that is far as I will go with it as it's sufficient already and I believe we will see MS/A advance this aspect as well. After getting up to altitude I visit Avsim and a few other spots often times when flying from/to new cities I will bring up Wiki to read the history of the country or city. What I do miss is FSCaptain which was my pathway to added 'meaning' for flying in P3D for years. I'm quite stunned I fly as much as I do w/o it because for P3D I never flew nor would have w/o FSCaptain. They're slowing getting something together for MSFS, and will try to integrate w/ GSX when it arrives. To me this is a testament to just how good MSFS already is. I spend more time flying now than I ever did in FSX/P3D, and thankfully almost none of this time is allocated for 'maintenance'. January 26, 20224 yr To the person whom tried to install an airport and it caused a CTD so promptly erased it. That I believe is a bug in the way msfs works. Just restart computer or in most my cases just restart msfs and most addons will work there after. Only real crashes I have now are due to products not being DX12 compatible like Kodiack 100 or Carenado planes. Like OP said there are some awesome freeware that take msfs to another level. Roy That reminds me of the earlier days of flight simming. Constantly tweaking settings, both computer and FS. Overclocking everything possible. Trying absolutely anything and everything to get just one or two FPS. Some times I would spend more time trying to get the thing to run smooth than actually flying. Thankfully I don't seem to do that any more..well at least nowhere near as much.
January 26, 20224 yr I have been a professional large computer system (operating systems and hardware) geek since 1969 when I started at NASA. If I spend less than four hours a day on the computer managing all the various aspects of our highly computerized life - I would feel lost. If MSFS did not keep me so busy with management, upgrade, problem solving activities - I would have to find some other application to keep me busy. MSFS can be difficult if you take advantage of all the wonderful payware and freeware and I often wonder how people who are not in love with computer technology find the will power to deal with it. I was spending too much time chasing continuous updates to stay current. Here is a case in point. This morning I noticed an offering for KCHA - Chattanoga, TN. Looked good. But I am not flying there so just made a mental note of it. About 30 minutes ago I was back on TO checking for an airport I plan to fly to on Friday this week. I noticed in Recent Updates there was already an update to the KCHA that was first posted this morning.... I believe I have snagged around 350 USA, Canadian, and Caribbean addon airports and I have so far only flown to/from 85 of them over around 182 flights. That is counting each airport once. I have been to a good number of them multiple times. I now just use the search box at TO to find my current destination(s) and check the version against what I have installed, and to check for any that are new to me. It is now just part of my flight planning.
