Long haul flights are not eco friendly

An 8 hour flight with the PMDG 777 means my PC is running hot for 8 hours straight. At the same time I have to turn on the air conditioner to prevent my PC warming my room. I feel guilty to do this just to see pixels moving pretending to fly a plane, it doesn't feel right.

A super yacht uses $3,240 worth of fuel per hour. I'm all for the eco movement, but it needs to be focused on the things that are contributing the vast majority of causes of our ecological problems, which in general involves billionaires and corporations. The power you're using to fly pretend airplanes is a drop in the bucket. At the most pessimistic assuming your rig is particularly awesome, you're using far less than 1,000W to do it, which if you include the air conditioner means you're using less than 7 dollars worth of energy per day assuming you always sim for 12 hours per day. Your damage to the environment isn't even enough to be a rounding error.

The light aircraft I fly burns 40 litres of leaded 100LL fuel per hour. The engines are carburetted, have completely unfiltered exhausts and still based on a design from the 1960s.

I don't even consider the environmental impact of my PC playing flight sim...

Thats not "realy flying" like real Life IMO 😏

cheers 😉

And what do you do during the long cruise during real-time simulation?  Do you go to the fridge?  Watch some TV?  Talk to your significant other?  Or do you do EXACTLY what a pilot does during these long hauls the whole time??

Sorry, I get a little upset with people who don't use time compression because it's not "real flying" .

I know people have their opinions on Emi (as do I), but he makes good points here.

Time compression is a non sense in my opinion because if you want fly "real" and experiment the real weather conditions, the real pilot and airplane stress, or simply exploring the world around you with real sunshines, you need to go without time compression. Not to mention that time compression is stressing your hot pc too.

I was just suggesting an alternative to feeling guilty about leaving the computer run for 8 hours... 🤷‍♀️

Seriously, Oh My what next.

Find a new game to play! It's that simple.

Folks flying an airplane video game on a 2d pancake monitor while doing IRL task away from their desk/rig while on autopilot for 8 hours talking all elitist as if there's something wrong with time compression.

What's the freakin difference if you are going AFK during an 8 hour flight on autopilot anyway?🤣

Now what's hardcore is sitting in VR for 8 hours straight going over landing clearance procedures and checklists and never leaving the cockpit.

Now that's hardcore!

You're 8*400Wh=3200Wh won't make the difference on 400mWh.

That's the big fallacy of this argument. It's also used on the national level: "We only cripple our economy and reduce our standard of living, but our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint are but a drop in a puddle".

And because everyone thinks this way, no one does anything.

We are running headlong towards the abyss. Because the alternative, having a less comfortable life is much worse to us as idea than having a planet that is becoming slowly uninhabitable in many areas.

So yes, it DOES make a difference to not do simulated long hauls. 😉

But let's go along and stream data over the internet to listen to music or watch movies instead of buying physical media, because it is more convenient but much worse for the environment.

You feel "guilty" for having a computer switched on, powered by some hydro plant that runs all around the clock more or less on it´s own by rotating  a turbine to produce electricity and doing no harm at all to any environment, giving awesome jobs and careers in the electrician and electronics sector.

But you don´t feel guilty when eating meat right, that is producing tons of methane and multiresistant bacteria being harmful to deadly to people by the tons of antibiotics mixed into the food, you don´t feel guilty for animals being caged in an being gruesome slaughtered, you don´t feel guilty wearing clothes produced by child slave labour, you don´t feel guilty about ANYTHING that really does actual harm to other people and animals - so better stop pretending being earth´s protector and the saviour by "saving the earth by not switching on the flight simulator on weekends and therefore saving 0,5kW/h"..... 😉

There are guys out there literally burning 1000's of GPU's on max to mine a non-physical pointless currency.

Don't worry about it.

Indeed, it's get's philosophical.

It's that Earth overshoot day discussion basically.

You can calculate you're own EOD and make the argument it's better to sit 8 hours behind a PC than take an actual IRL long haul flight, but that is beside the point 😜

We as earth population consume more energy (because we are with more and each of us use a lot) than the earth can sustain. And earth is balancing for a new equilibrium, which it has been doing over millions of years already.

But it is really difficult to lower the luxury level we've come accustomed to. However It is often less of an convenient to start with yourselves (what can i do about it) than wait and let a governmental institutes dictate measures.

Solution: time compression 🤪... see PMDG is very green minded company thinking about climate change and all that! 🤣

What kind of thread is this? Off-topic all-you-can-eat? Power plants, aircraft, yachts, climate change, meat...

Living in Scotland there are probably 6 days a year when the extra heat isn't welcome. Certainly cheaper than putting the heating on....

Al Gore will be happy to hear that....if he hasn't drawn under 50ft of water by now somewhere in Miami...😂
