Maybe an "extreme" solution, but I weighed out the soft cost of time & hassle verses the hard cost of what amounts to just another Hi Fi addon, and it made more sense to do it. YMMV. That sounds like something to think about. Is there any difference between the Steam and MS versions?

The biggest difference is if you ever decide to get an Xbox. Only content purchased & paid for directly in the MS version's Marketplace will appear on Xbox. I'm thinking about it because my gaming rig vid card went on the fritz last year and the wait for an affordable replacement was the closest I've ever come to full blown DT's 😉 Having a $400 Xbox X that's as good as a $2,000 PC seems like worthwhile insurance (to me 🤣). Other than that, there is the ubiquitous Steam launcher, and I do have some other Steam-only games like FSX SE, but once you're logged in to MS FS, it's exactly the same. I have all kinds of addons in there, from 3rd Party Devs, payware, freeware, Orbx, FlightSim.to, etc. All install / function exactly as expected. Steam is essentially just an "overlay", if you will...

Are you certain that you have the video cable from your monitor correctly plugged into your GPU and NOT the on-board graphics? Your error message indicates that the monitor is not correctly connected. Can you take a picture of the back of your computer, especially where the cable from your monitor plugs into the computer? That will help answer this. 9800X3d, 4090, 64 GB DDR5 6000 RAM, 4 TB NVME (2x2), 4K Ultra + Framegen

Just tried going to check the version of my video driver, because when I start MSFS it sometimes tells me my version is out of date and may cause issues. I got the following message, but it's the same connection I've always used, how can that be? https://imgur.com/a/9AuvRol When I get to the point where it asks if I want to switch to safe mode, after a bit it starts playing video of going all around the different parts of the scenery, etc. Hello Andy. Just to verify: Did you previously mention getting this message from MSFS in one of your posts here? You got the message but did not update the driver at that time? What is you video card and current version (with the problem)?? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW

If your video card isn't working or isn't plugged in, then it won't matter if you buy the Steam or Store version. Don't bother with the Steam edition for MSFS. As several people have mentioned, you seem to be having hardware issues. MSFS may be attempting to use your onboard GPU, rather than your graphics card. Make sure you can run other games and other flight simulators. For example, make sure P3D works for you. And try running DCS World if you have the space. If you can't run. P3D or DCS World, you probably can't run MSFS. i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM

Has something changed within the program which would make it that different?

Yes: with any update that improves performance or even just changes the way the software uses the hardware, your hardware gets exposed to new / different demands. This can expose hardware instabilities which might have lain hidden / dormant from the outset. And this is true no matter how skilfully your PC was assembled. 14900ks, RTX4090, 64Gb@6000-30-36-36-T2, Samsung 990Pro 2Tb , Dell G3223Q 32" 4k Gsync + 27" secondary monitor. Are you certain that you (or someone else) haven't changed the way the monitor is plugged in? If you can't check that, maybe you should take your machine to a local computer shop and ask them to help. MSFS isn't the issue here.
