Hey Andy. I take it you aren't a computer "nerd," right?  Sorry for using that term, but my point is, if you aren't familiar with computers, you should probably talk to a computer shop that can install the video card that you buy, and also see if you can talk them into making sure MSFS runs with whatever video card you buy

Or test using an old video card.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

Yeah, a good point of entry for those who want to fly but are not computer-literate confident enough to do things themselves.

Ryzen 5800X clocked to 4.7 Ghz (SMT off), 32 GB ram, Samsung 1 x 1 TB NVMe 970, 2 x 1 TB SSD 850 Pro raided, Asus Tuf 3080Ti

P3D 4.5.14, Orbx Global, Vector and more, lotsa planes too.

Surely the only sensible solution in this instance.

Have you tried Alt-Tab?

That worked for me. Black screen. Because msfs would not start because the window was not the right size. alt tab put it in windowed mode for me to resize by dragging the edges. Then it booted up fine. Otherwise, it never would boot up, got stuck in a weird black screen.

Sometimes changing the Scale in Windows Display Settings (right click desktop) cures the issue.

Steam has a checkbox to start in fast mode. That can cure this type of issue. The store version, instead of steam, also has a fast boot option. This option bypasses some weird screens that can prevent msfs from loading.

Forcing MSFS to open in "safe mode" instead of regular mode can cure this type of issue. There is a file that you must find and move into a folder to force MSFS to open in "safe mode".

If your computer date and time is wrong, MSFS can and often will refuse to boot up. Use a windows app/utility to reset the time to internet time everytime the system boots up, freeware.

Felt the hobby is basically an expensive beta test.

The sim, aircrafts, sceneries and pretty much everything is beta.

Way too many updates and glitches.

I've simmed since 1994 and have lost the passion.

It happens.  I started around the same time with FS4.0 - predominantly simming with Microsoft, but XP10-12 as well as P3D and DCS.  Definitely times where I would take a break in the past.  But not with MSFS...  we have phenomenal addons that seem to work well for me.  I love GA, so all the Black Square stuff like the Dukes, are extremely in depth, I use TDS GTNxi avionics - you've got the A2A comanche - both planes feel like the real ones.  The airports are photoreal. Same goes for the textures (I paint so I know!)  I flew the other day in the sim and it looked just like my real life flight from the same area/altitude.

I understand that new sim updates can be frustrating - but I completely prefer this to the stale state that FSX SP2 was in.  It's innovative and keeps developers innovative too!

When MSFS2020 was released four years ago it was made very clear, for those who bothered to read the detailed announcement, that this was something entirely new in flightsimming: a work in progress with frequent updates, and -- for the first time in any flight sim -- real-world satellite-streamed scenery and numerous other innovations.. Clearly this was not for everybody, and those uncomfortable with being part of a project would be better off sticking with FSX or whatever they were comfortable with. I bought into it, and despite occasional glitches and problems, have never regretted doing so. To me this is flight simulation beyond anything I ever imagined when I started with FS2 over 40 years ago. In a word, fantastic.

"Everything is beta." Even life, but we muddle along anyway.

Having a platform that is frequently improved and updated for no additional cost is ample compensation for the occasional update hassle.

Your lost passion probably magnifies what you see as a glitch, as well as frustration with updates.

Generally, I find MSFS to be mostly stable.  Nobody forces us to buy the first release of a product, so it can be beneficial to wait for the first few updates.

I don't share your sentiment that most add-ons are in beta. Anything of a technical nature, real world or not, will have to through a process of bug fixing and software updates - just ask Boeing or Airbus 😁

It is unrealistic to expect perfect software in MSFS.  For example, the Fenix A320 probably still wouldn't have seen it's first release 🙂

Your passion may return after a break 👍🙂

Despite the growing pains, for me MSFS 2020 has been the best sim ever. I've tried most over the past 30 years and MSFS is the BEST!

That's because third party developers have somehow managed to fix what asobo could not fix. A good example is the FSLTL fleet an Injector. That developer deserve my support.

I hope ASOBO hires the FSLTL team for MSFS 2024.

Yeah, sometimes it can be annoying but what I've found is that the overwhelming majority of issues in this sim (currently) are mods or any software changes that people add in. The basic sim (premium edition in my case) completely stock with no changes is surprisingly stable. Once you start adding in planes, especially those with higher fidelity coding etc, you can run into problems. Even just a few days ago a known bug for pmdg prevented me using any mouse button or controls out of nowhere. The DC6 and 777 worked fine. The 737 series? Nah. Had to reinstall.

The default sim is just fine but as you know we cant help but tweak with everything.

Good thing most of us have other hobbies haha
