Some noteable quotes from article:

  • Clouds now boast more volume and realistic formations

I am speechless, and that doesn't happen too often.  😀

as if all those other new improvements were not enough I thought after reading this article about the new weather, those who thought MSFS 2020 wasn't "realisitic" enough for them have no excuse anymore but to upgrade to MSFS 2024 even if it is just the basic version. otherwise I can't take their complaints serious any longer.

any flight simulator will always be and remain a beta version that improves over time and becomes final with  the next major version. 🤣

A bit disappointing that the various new aviation activities are tied to career advancement and in that sense need to be "unlocked", though sounds like you can skip all the training/etc and go straight to the check rides which then means an initial few hours to unlock the activities and then they stay unlocked? But for a true "sandbox" experience, they should make all activities available so we can just pick an activity, configure it maybe (i.e. location and aircraft, choose where the fire will be for firefighting, or where to crop dust, etc) and then just go do it, for the times we just want to do things free-form without any serious implications for the career status etc. In one of the interviews it was discussed this option is there only as a debug setting, but hopefully they open this up later. And also make the aviation activities very configurable for the user (as makes sense).

First of all, big THANK YOU for the precious links (as usual, you're the "Master of the Links!!!" 🙂 ) regarding the various mentions to FDM and Ground Physics !!! I've started to watch each of the videos and there's a lot of important info there 👍 :  [https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/649467-graphics-comparison-of-msfs-2024-vs-msfs-2020/?do=findComment&comment=5166429]

@Krakin, thank you also for: [https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/649230-msfs-2024-global-preview-mega-thread/?do=findComment&comment=5164764]

Regarding your concerns with the way access to some missions will depend on successfully going through steps in your career, my only concern with that is that I know it'll be a "spare time killer" for me... I tend to get addict to such type of structured environment.

Some 4-5 years ago I became addict to a well known combat flight simulation tittle, War Thunder, which by it's nature reminds me a LOT of MSFS and now especially 2024. Now, the reason for adhering to WT was somehow perplexing because, as you may guess, I am almost totally absorbed by the aspects of flight dynamics, ground physics, weather modelling in any flight simulator, and that was why I (starting 2013) went playing DCS World, IL-2 Great Battles and then ended up a WT addict... even though WT is well known also for being a lot more simplistic regarding flight dynamics, non weapon systems and weather modelling...

In WT I had to accumulate "wt currency" in order to get access to higher rating aircraft. The game is very well designed graphically, and today can easily be considered graphics and scenery wise up to the higher levels of sophistication, and you get into it and play air combat, in 3 possible levels of complexity, of which "simulation battles" are the top in terms of FM complexity. This attracted me so so so much that I had to put and end to it, not as i usually do to MSFS or XP, but because I found it was taking way to much of my spare time.

This all "just" to say that I fear being attracted by that new game structure that comes with 2024 🙂 And I would actually make it even "more difficult" to the point of, if you crash and die or get seriously injured, having to start again from scratch, in a "new life"  🙂

I am sure this approach can bring even more players to MSFS.

While I don't like seeing other platforms presenting problems to the 3pds who live from their sales for those platforms, unless they decide to jump to MSFS, I believe this flight simulation game will, at least, have a very positive consequence in most people attracted to it - increase the interest in Aviation and the whole activity around it IRL, and, who knows, becoming an additional motivation for those who consider working in the Aviation Industry IRL...

As a glider pilot I just want to be able to use MSFS 2024 to, even better than in 2020, being able to explore places I could fly over IRL if I ever manage to go there flying, like the Alps, South Africa, Washington and Colorado, ...

I'm with you, Jcomm. Having to go over the obstacles of check rides and certifications to get cleared to perform the career-specific missions will tickle a part of my brain that makes me want to keep coming back. I like the idea of making progression and getting the satisfaction of meeting goals to reach the reward of firefighting or crop dusting.

This was a recent addition to the FAQ: https://www.flightsimulator.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-2024-faq/

Q: Will there be an early release Alpha or Beta build we users can opt into?
A: We are planning to have a Tech Alpha prior to launch – likely in late October.

Sounds more like a closed alpha/beta to a select audience. Doubt they'll do an open beta (even if they did they'd have to restrict only to pre-order customers or whatever probably?). This late preview release could also be something to stress-test the servers before release which they mentioned earlier about doing.

1980s: Sublogic FS II on C64 ---> 1990s: Flight Unlimited I/II, MSFS 95/98 ---> 2000s/2010s: FS/X, P3D, XP ---> 2020+: MSFS
Current system: i9 13900K, RTX 4090, 64GB DDR5 4800 RAM, 4TB NVMe SSD

It needs a Beta Stress Test on the servers prior to launch, a lot of games have done this in the past so I'd be surprised if they don't here especially with the extra load this one will require.

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

Yeah Jorg mentioned a server stress test back at FSExpo 2024

Who all feels like an investment in this sim will be one that will be for the unforeseen future? I cant even imagine whats missing in this sim...on things that could be improved upon but still will be present at launch. In 2020 we knew we did have seasons, snow was later added, wake turbulence, all kinds of weather elements were missing and the sim wasnt optimized for making use of modern computers with HT etc. There was no VR at 3030 release.

I see a noticeable leap in almost every aspect of the sim from 2020 to 2024 but with the exception of trains missing (as we now have AI boats based off of RL locations), I cant imagine anything that not in the new sim that would be needed to release a sim after this one. Cloud based items that all can be upgraded on the sever side with updates to build upon but really nothing is missing that I can think of.

We do know of at least one new handcrafted airport in 2024, KGCN - Grand Canyon National Park Airport.

You can see it in several of the preview videos, there's handcrafted assets, including several of the builds like hotels right down the road from it.

woah, there's a free cam on the 'ready' screen for flight challanges, so you can scope out the terrain before starting
