Question Regarding MSFS 2024

Featured Replies

Curious question regarding MSFS 20204... As someone that flies exclusively in the Fenix / other tubeliners, what is the benefit for making the switch to 2024?  I've read some of the features and to me it appears that 2024 is geared more toward GA type flyers (I could be wrong).  Graphically, i don't see a terribly huge difference so am I missing something?  I have 3rd party airports that i understand can be ported over to 2024.  My planes apparently can be ported over apparently.  So if I do all of that, what are the benefits over 2020?  I know this is a wait and see type scenario, but I don't really see the difference.   Can someone shed some light?  Thanks!

It'll definitely look better and should perform better at similar settings to 2020.

Not sure if you saw, this presentation by MS/Asobo highlighting the new features and changes in MSFS 2024 might help: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/651609-global-preview-event-presentation/

The lands of the world are varied and beautiful. Airliners fly thousands of feet away from it. Those who fly on them never can really see its glory except for arrivals and departures.

I mostly fly tubeliners as well and I think the improved atmospheric lighting engine and the clouds alone are enough reason to switch.

In every way, this is supposed to be an upgrade. Performance, fidelity, physics, graphics, just the whole boat. I don’t know why people wouldn’t update.

For someone in your position that is using 2020 in the way you describe it, it would be a very reasonable approach to just continue as is and do an assessment again in six months to see if your favourite tubeliners, airports and utilities are working or has been replaced with something better in the new sim and if you are ready for the jump, if at all.

Compatibility with my existing addons (which is one aircraft, and around a hundred airports).

Off the top of my head:

  • Better ground handling
  • Better atmospheric lighting and clouds
  • Improved performance. (One specific item relevant to tubeliners is an item in the SDK that will allow more fine-grained LODding of large airport terminals, though developers will need to update their sceneries to take advantage.)
  • LIDO charts (though if you have Navigraph you may not care)

For me the OP's question is a testament to just how good 2020 is.  That being said 2024 brings a massive increase in polygon count such that a lot of scenery/mesh will be much higher in effective resolution.  This, and of course major changes in flight dynamics, even some in weather, clouds and lighting, turbulence modeling.  I'm also a tubeliner flyer almost exclusively as well and will continue using 2020 until such time Self Loading Cargo, A Pilot's Life and at least a couple of the 4 planes I use are working well in 2024.  I am looking forward to getting familiar with 2020 and plan to rekindle interest in GA flying and maybe some mission play while waiting.  I was a victim of wildfire and used to do air firefighting in P3D as crude as it was.   I'm hoping the MAX is at least as good as WT's 787X which I use and really enjoy.

I agree , all I fly now is the PMDG 737, 777 , Fenix and possibly the iFly 737 when it is finished . If they don't work in MSFS2024 without a long wait, I will hold off getting 2024.

Same here.

However, I'm pretty much optimistic that by Apr-May 2025, we'll get all the mentioned planes converted together with many sceneries. Also, new AMD will be baptised in the MS2024 environment and we will have better knowledge base for fine-tuning.

It will be an upgrade in just about every aspect, but it will take time before many add-ons are compatible imo. I expect to be using 2020 for a few months, at least.

A huge improvement for the airliners would be performance and optimizations Asobo accomplished with 2024. But there are secondary improvements beneficial for ailiners. CFD implementation for all aircrafts = third party devs will have better options to use the SDK, and it will be potentially easier to develop a study level airliner. New and improved live traffic, no doubt this something airliners will like. New ground improvements = no need to fake same ground effects, although bush fliers will get more benefits from a higher solution ground, airliner users will also be happier with the improvements.

I don't see why an airliner user wouldn't move on to 2024 as soon as their add-ons are ported.

I'm aiming to get off MSFS2020 as soon as most of the major high fidelity aircraft are operable in the new sim and there is something akin to AIG level of airline traffic in the new sim.

My only concern is whether the Fenix is going to need to have a substantial rework due to the fact that its backend model is external. It may work to their advantage but it also may not. Same with the Comanche.

The WASM based stuff (PMDG / INIBUILDS) yeah i presume a few tweaks are needed but i don't think there will be any show stopping obstacles.
