MSFS2024 seen by a grumpy old man

Featured Replies

MSFS is like a sandcastle that children patiently build and then break without the slightest regret once finished, to rebuild another one.
Everything that had been patiently fixed and improved during the 4 years of MSFS 2020's life has been destroyed and redone.
GUI, controller assignments, weather, ATC, AI aircraft, autogen etc...
Why?
For better smoothness? This is not the case.
For better streaming? Oh no more.
For better rendering of photogrammetric textures? It's the opposite that happens.
For a better user experience? No, there is nothing intuitive or very logical in this new version.
For the graphic quality? Only for what concerns lighting and shadows, which are more beautiful but which could have been the subject of a simple patch and not a new version.

The problem is that when you change everything you do the same stupid things again, and it takes time to fix them all.
Now we'll have to wait 4 years for everything to work properly and then they'll do it all over again.
But we're addicted to new features and once we've tried them we don't want to go back, so most of us will gradually drop MSFS 2020 to migrate to 2024.
And we'll accept like good sheep the dance of the multiple "2 steps forward, 3 steps back" that MS and Asobo are preparing for us for the next four years.

Oh my...
My wife says I've become grumpy since I stopped flying, I think she's right!! 😄

You are going to get bombarded by the usual few about how great it is and how everything works for them so the sim is great.  Then you can head to the official forums to realize you are not alone in your assessment.

The largest thread is regarding 24's "readiness to launch" and has over 1,600 posts and 50,000 views and every once in a while someone posts about how great it is but the "data" isn't showing that yet.

In fact Steam's numbers were 6,100 MSFS 2020 users and 6,000 MSFS 24 users so at least on Steam it is a near 50/50 split.   If 24 had lived up to the hype and been the "next generation" 2020 and just picked up where we left off with the enhancements and without all these issues I would wager the number on 24 would be MUCH higher.

I think that is the biggest issue.  Had 24 been an evolution and just improved on 2020 without the need for the revolution of UI design, missions tied to career mode, streaming issues, PG issues, texture issues that so many people or reporting there is no way it is in this situation.   Any time there is a perceived regression instead of progression people will not be happy.

Some can see the "potential" but others see it for what it is right now and think it is buggy and incomplete and everyone should be entitled to their opinions without all the ad-hominem on these forums.

Just look at the FSElite review.  If people don't agree with what he said, most of which was spot on it's deemed clickbait.  There is no room for civil discussion LOL.

You are not alone in your dissatisfaction despite the fact you are about to be told you are 😉

If it frustrates you, there's a simple solution.  Don't be an early adopter!

I find the older I get, the easier it gets to delay gratification.  It's simply become easier to wait for the next shiny new thing... waiting to be sure it really IS not just new, but truly shiny.

I came fairly late to MSFS from P3D (though part of that was admittedly because I had stopped simming due to lifestyle changes - full time RVer) and I don't regret it a bit.  When I did finally join the party, it was a move to a stable and mature sim and an easy transition.  I'll do the same with 2024, though I doubt I'll see the need to wait quite as long.  I have no doubt that I'll move, but I'm happy to wait for the dust to settle and the frustration levels to decrease.  In the meantime, I've got a solid sim to fly in and I'll enjoy watching as the new one gets better and better.

So now the Emperor walked under his high canopy in the midst of the procession, through the streets of his capital; and all the people standing by, and those at the windows, cried out, "Oh! How beautiful are our Emperor's new clothes! What a magnificent train there is to the mantle; and how gracefully the scarf hangs!" in short, no one would allow that he could not see these much-admired clothes; because, in doing so, he would have declared himself either a simpleton or unfit for his office.

But the Emperor has nothing at all on!" said a little child.

Fair response and exactly why I am still on 2020 and similar to you I don't think I started with 2020 until 2022...

I should have listened to this kind of suggestion. I gave up for now. I can take the learning curves like setting up controllers or such. But knowing many many users experiencing fps down to single digit on the ground is a deal breaker. Asked for a refund but Steam rejects it, saying I have more than 2 hrs playing. Well, it took me more than 3 hrs to set up the controller, let alone completing a proper session.

After waiting three years to switch from P3Dv4 to MSFS 2020, it can be seen that I have some pedigree with respect to the "wait and see" philosophy

Wow, that's unfair.
I thought you could request a refund up to 14 days after purchase.

Agreed. Although I bought MSFS2020 early on, the initial product turned me off for almost 2 years. About SU7, things were good enough for me to begin investing significant time to make it a replacement for P3D.

Find myself in the same situation right now with MSFS2024. Purchased it, but giving it time to mature before making it a primary sim.

My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet

Working on MSFS 2024 versions.

I just ditched 2024 yesterday after a frustrating time since launch.  I actually noticed my mood decrease, feeling snappy and tired.  Flight sim is a big part of my life and it's helped me get through some real world flying, so I have neither the patience nor the desire for the latest mess.

From trying to make it run smoothly and look as good as 2020, to dealing with the dreadful controller situation, to trying to get even basic add ons to work, I've simply hit the wall.  I'm no newbie with over 4,500 hours in 2020, simming since 1996, and a few hundred real world hours.  Stuttering everywhere, data loading in randomly, blurry textures, it looks and plays really poorly (for me at least).  Why can I not use proper ATC in career mode?  Why are there giraffes all over the runway?  Why do I have to stream literally everything?  Why does everything stutter so much when it doesn't with the same settings in 2020?

I'll probably give it another go when PMDG finally get their 737 out into 2024, but I'm actually preparing to never go back to it at all.  I've grown to resent it and even hate it.  It's up there with Sim City 2013 and Cities Skylines 2 for thinking, what on earth are they trying to do here?  This is rubbish and it sucks.

Anyway, back to A Pilot's Life, the PMDG 737 and a stable 30FPS flying all over the world in fairly sharp FS2020.  Until they take that away from us I think that will be the only sim I use.

From another grumpy old man:  Completely agree, they've broken FS24 (mostly I think to facilitate increased use by XBoxers) to little immediate benefit for the rest of us.

FS20 WAS a mixed bag to start with BUT the improvements over existing sims were obvious and worth the effort, I was an alpha tester hamster and day 1 buyer and never regretted it.

FS24...not bought yet, still not seeing anything I really NEED in it's list of 'improvements'.

...

Developement is always a challenge between building between known and unknown territory.

Fantasy is always brilliant for new step forwards but often lag the muscle to adapt . Like snake skin.

At least Microsoft knows this and i do recall they commit them to support MSFS2020 to 2028? That is a smart move  so this advanced tech out here  - which also need time to adapt as well

I second the idea of not jumping in on the bleeding edge for most people.  I didn't even bother trying to install during the server issues.  To put it bluntly, many of you have no business jumping on a sim on day 1 (or even in the first few weeks and maybe months).

I've worked in IT for a long time now, and I will tell people - what you can control is how frustrated you get.  You always have the option to shut down and walk away.

Working with people + IT for this long, I will say that if you go in with a negative/frustrated attitude, you are much more likely to get negative results.  The best tip I can give anyone when the frustration level starts to rise is to stop!  You'd be amazed what a clear head will do.  I still practice this myself regularly.  Get up and go for a walk.  Stop looking at the screen and do something else.

Think of it as a self fulfilling prophecy.

This is your hobby, don't let a piece of software negatively impact you, especially when the older version works just fine.

A good attitude.

I think the worst thing is that screen you are forced to sit through at the start, after shelling out loads of money on a decent rig.

"Well, this is what it could look like"

The actual experience for many of us is a million miles away.  And yes, FS2020 is still a solid and fine simulator that looks fantastic.
