Is SU4 really turning the corner for MSFS 2024?

I don’t use DLSS, just TAA = 200.  DLSS, Frame Gen, etc. will make the image softer… but I don’t consider that as blurry … terrain tiles not resolving to higher resolution based on LOD is what I define as blurry.  The only time I’ve seen lower resolution tiles is at ONLY initial flight load and they resolve to correct LOD in 1-2 seconds.

Maybe a couple of different “blurry” being observed?

I would not use DLSS or FrameGen. I do not use it now, so I see no need to use it with a new PC that will be vastly more powerful than the one that I currently have.

  • I was very happy with MSFS 2024 from day one. Every Service Update so far has been a cherry on top. I'm expecting SU4 to be the same.

It takes ZERO "development" work to "maintain" a server farm.  Chances are they are completely separate teams.

No gaming developer shuts down the servers 2 years after a new release.  Chances are those MSFS 2020 servers will run for an addt'l few years.  Remember the 10 yr comment?  We are ~ 5 yrs in, I would expect AT LEAST another 2-4 years of the 2020 servers existing.  I don't know that there will be any addt'l development to 2020 post SU16 now they share the same digital twin, but who knows, if upcoming City Updates can also be applicable to 2020 without addt'l development they might throw 2020 users a bone but to think "it's been two years they should shut the servers down" is not even realistic or based on business/gaming best practices...

Jorg said last year that 2020 support will last until 2028. But he didn't say what end of support meant exactly. Whether that meant no more patches, or a shut down of the servers, it isn't clear.

....when it comes to 3rd party devs, there certainly is a non-trivial cost to support both 2020 and 2024 (and at some/most? times significant).. so I'm all for those devs to focus on 2024 only if it means better aircraft and other add-ons developed natively for 2024 from the ground up, taking advantage of all the sim's capabilities/features.

Supported by this comment I just read by the developer of I-Fly 737 Max 8:

“The structural differences between MSFS 2020 and 2024 are too vast and extremely time and labour-consuming to develop for both. Therefore, the decision has been made to only continue with MSFS 2024 development once SP1 has been released”.

And SP1 is apparently due out later this year.  I really look forward to the new EFT as the current OEM Boeing one is just not very user friendly and just clunky to use for me.

Well, SU4 is out now. I have been reading Reddit, Avsim, checking FSElite, watching Twitch and Youtube livestreams, etc.  Based on my own reading and watching of the feedback,, it's been tremendously positive so far.

I think it's fair to say, SU4 has turned the corner for MSFS 2024. Now maybe they will mess up SU5 or a later sim update, who knows what will happen.  But as of today, it seems like the flight sim community are overwhelmingly enjoying SU4.

I’m not complaining, but you really do invest a lot of your time following this sim!

I think I've mentioned this before, but aside from flight simulation being one of my hobbies, I am interested in the business case of MSFS, because MSFS 2020 was a very advanced flight simulator compared to the competition when it entered the market -specifically, the huge improvement in graphics and also, the streaming of satellite scenery world wide.  More or less, MSFS 2020 is what we call a "disruptor" in business. The one drawback of MSFS 2020 when it was released, was that there were few study level planes developed for it, and that's what held it back, until a lot of the study level planes started appearing from 2022 and onwards, and that's when the hardcore flight simmer user base for it took off. As well as flight simulation being one of my hobbies, I am interested in seeing the outcome of how MSFS does since it came in as a disruptor (in this case, MSFS 2024 since it is the latest version of MSFS).

I hope to understand how businesses with disruptors like this evolve, and I think MSFS in the flight simulation industry makes a very good case study. I think if I can get a good enough understanding of it, then I can apply these learnings to other investments or businesses I get involved in the future.  It also doesn't hurt that flight simulation is one of my hobbies, so I don't get bored when I read about what's going on in the flight simulation industry for home users.

Already, I am looking into both AI and humanoid robots - they are disrupting or about to disrupt other industries.

IMO flight sim is an absolutely perfect use case for frame gen. You can use it with TAA so it has no effect on image sharpness, and the additional smoothness of motion you get with it is VERY noticeable.

To each their own but TAA + 2x frame gen takes you from good-feeling performance to absolutely snappy feeling performance for essentially 0 penalty on a card that supports it.

Yeh there’s absolutely no reason not to use frame gen. It’s a total game changer for simmers and the difference is night and day. I have pretty beefy rig (4080 Super/7800x3d) but I can’t get to native 60fps with heavy add ons. With frame gen I can fly all day long in all situations at a steady 60, which is more than enough.

guys still getting annoying stutters usually on approaches, mostly fine in the FPS100-120 any other times? deleted rolling cache after su4 install messed with all the dlss/taa frame gen settings and still keep getting the annoying little stutters once in a while.... I have a 7900x3d and 4080 super so cant be hardware. TLOD is 135 so conservative. running 4k. Any ideas for those with similar hardware and issues?

Anyone see advantage in downloading the WU's?

I do agree, but I would expect that with the SU4 I can get rid of 2x frame gen, it seems is not the case, it is still needed to get some 60fps smoothness at EDDF with the A350. Without frame gen the real fps performance is still on the low side.

I would not need anything close to 60fps in order to be happy with performance. Maybe that is because I am used to running MSFS 2020 on a 2015 specification PC?

I agree, but if there is even a whiff of "graphical artefacts", then you can forget it. I prefer image quality over outright performance.

Not for me now, FG is pretty solid for me.  Settled on some great settings, and very glad I got some decent hardware before prices started jumping.  Made the decision on the basis that on historical data, prices weren't going to get significantly cheaper, but it seems I definitely dodged some memory pricing bullets with that decision too....
