So do not expect any improvements to Live Wx system, cloud depiction, 3rd party LiveWX API access, etc anytime in the near future

Jorg said they were working that.

Regarding the cloud depiction. I hope I am right but the way he answered it was as if they do have something big going on regarding wx but it's just too early to show

Here's what Jorg said 5 years ago - Sep. 2021:

"Late this year you will get this first Update (remark: SU7), we’re planning on another which will be really awesome when it happens. It will probably be in 2022, it could be as late as 2023. Weather is one of those things. It’s where planes live, it’s got to be awesome. We will get it as good as you can get it. That is really the goal."

Here's an AI breakdown:

Sim Update 7

  • Planned release: October 13, 2026.

  • Includes the free National Championship Air Races mode.

  • Continued performance, stability and crash improvements.

  • Career-mode fixes and improvements are a major focus.

  • New EFB ground-services app with pushback, GPU, baggage and other services.

  • New DevMode performance tool showing the processing cost of individual aircraft systems.

  • Marketplace improvements will be split between SU7 and SU8.

  • POIs glowing too brightly at night should mostly be fixed in SU7, although some packages may follow later.

Performance, stutters and LOD

  • A dedicated team continues working on microstutters, terrain loading and main-thread blockers.

  • Some larger optimizations are being developed in a separate branch and probably won’t be in the current SU7 beta.

  • No specific major engine breakthrough was announced.

  • Asobo is still investigating the reported LOD reduction, but said there is no progress to report yet.

  • They confirmed that Terrain Pre-Caching set to Ultra keeps more scenery behind the camera in RAM/VRAM and can reduce camera-panning stutters—provided you have enough memory.

  • Lower pre-caching uses less memory but may create stutters when scenery must be moved back into VRAM.

  • Terrain LOD is already automatically increased with altitude.

  • Dynamic Detail only reduces detail to maintain your target FPS. Their advice is to set the maximum TLOD you want and let Dynamic Detail lower it when necessary.

  • Disappearing landing gear on AI aircraft is generally caused by the individual aircraft’s LOD configuration and should be reported per aircraft.

DLSS 5, FSR and graphics

  • DLSS 5 will eventually be supported, but there is no date.

  • They are testing it and watching the community modifications.

  • The problem is that DLSS 5 can alter lighting, shadows and ambient occlusion because it interprets and enhances the scene.

  • They want better control through Nvidia’s API before officially integrating it.

  • Masking cockpit displays to reduce DLSS/FSR ghosting is being investigated.

  • AMD FSR work continues, but there is no estimated completion date.

  • PS5 PSSR 1 produced worse results than Asobo’s TAA. PSSR 2 hasn’t been tested yet but is on the backlog.

For your setup: I would keep using the sim’s supplied DLSS 3.10.6/DLAA Preset M for now. Nothing in this stream suggests that forcing DLSS 5 is ready for normal use.

Career mode

  • A dedicated “strike team” is working on Career.

  • SU7 adds better mission filters, including:

    • Payout

    • Distance

    • Duration

    • Altitude

    • Runway length

    • Runway surface

  • Mission generation is being improved to provide more realistic departure and destination airports.

  • Fuel calculations and flight-planning integration are being improved.

  • No new mission types are planned for the near future. The priority is repairing and improving existing missions.

  • Career economy balancing will be considered, but only after serious money-loss and progression bugs are addressed.

  • They want to allow users to select purchased liveries for company aircraft, but gave no timeline.

  • Changing aircraft in Bush Trips is difficult because every aircraft must be checked for compatibility with the mission and spawn location.

  • Multiplayer and better completion tracking for Bush Trips would require substantial changes to the mission system.

Interestingly, the new runway-length filtering sounds directly related to that C408 being assigned a 1,058-foot runway post you asked about earlier.

Weather and world

  • No immediate overhaul of cloud depiction was announced.

  • Work is happening on clouds, but it isn’t ready to be shown.

  • Better third-party weather injection remains on the backlog with no timeline.

  • Live-weather data itself cannot simply be exposed because of licensing restrictions.

  • Satellite imagery updates have effectively been paused since MSFS 2024 launched. The priority is correcting colour and seasonal inconsistencies before adding more imagery.

  • Photogrammetry trees remain a long-term problem rather than something with an immediate engine fix.

  • World Hub has not been actively worked on because of limited development resources.

  • Missing airports and runways receive the highest priority, followed by taxiway, parking and naming corrections.

ATC and shared cockpit

  • There is no current plan to rewrite the default ATC system.

  • Working Title and Asobo will continue fixing the existing ATC.

  • AI/LLM-based ATC and advanced traffic injection are being left to third-party developers for now.

  • Shared cockpit remains a long-term project because complex aircraft and WASM systems need their own synchronization support.

  • A limited version for simple analogue aircraft might be possible, but definitely not this year and perhaps not even next year.

World Update 23

  • Covers Poland and the Baltic states.

  • Tentatively planned for October 27, although it could slip by approximately a week.

  • Includes:

    • Two new photogrammetry areas

    • Five handcrafted airports

    • 77 POIs

    • Three discovery flights

    • Five landing challenges

    • One MSFS 2024 rally race

    • A professionally researched guided tour

Other dates and announcements

  • October 6: Carenado Cessna T206H.

  • October 13: SU7 and National Championship Air Races.

  • October 27: Tentative World Update 23.

  • Mid-October: Expected MSFS 2020 SU17 beta.

  • November 17: Planned MSFS 2020 SU17 release.

  • City Update 17 is being changed into a larger Livery Update, featuring licensed airline liveries.

  • Remaining MSFS 2020 Local Legend/Famous Flyer aircraft conversions to native MSFS 2024 versions are planned for 2027.

  • Next developer livestream is planned for November and should reveal the 2027 roadmap.

Bottom line

The stream was mainly about incremental repairs and content, not a transformative core-sim overhaul. The most relevant news for you is:

  1. SU7 is targeting October 13.

  2. Performance work continues, but larger optimizations may come in later betas/updates.

  3. DLSS 5 is being evaluated but isn’t ready.

  4. LOD reduction is still under investigation with no progress announced.

  5. Career runway filtering is coming in SU7.

  6. Default ATC isn’t getting a major rewrite.

  7. No major weather or cloud upgrade is imminent.

According to Seb.. If it the object switches to an lod without gears then they need to be modeled to be seen at longer distances.

Sigh... I know this is not a new topic and yet they are talking about it like its the first time someone it bringing this to their attention. Happy to see the devs from fsreborn and AIG both chirp up in the chat explaining that this very issue was brought up with recorded evidence in the dev support forum.

They just need to create more mipmaps we used to call them. A dev pain I'm sure.

So from what's I've gathered.

performance fixes and air races 👍

Weather, lod reductions, clouds, turbulence etc safe to say for MSFS2028-30

Here’s the problem. People immediately come at their defense when they see a cloudy sky up to FL180. Then say “weather looks great today”.

The problem isn’t that clouds “exist” in the sim. They do have a better basic cloud system then we had in FSX. What we don’t have is variety. We don’t have also the detail required to create altocumulus clouds, anvil clouds. Everything I’ve mentioned and asked in this forum to go vote for over and over.

The other thing we don’t have is a third party system that gives the developers whom can design weather with their decades of experience a chance to build something where we don’t have to rewrite the weather in the users immediate area. If we simply had an SDK that allows us to do that I think there’d be more patience to let them cook what ever it is that they say they’re “working on” even this it’s been almost 7 years of “we’re working in it”.

The last part of this is that they keep hiding behind this “licensing” problem of not being able to share the weather from Meteoblue. Honestly, we don’t need it. If you have a preset that immediately deletes the live weather anyway, why would a developer with a proper tool box need to even look at that default weather? It was the same narrative with the weather radar. It almost makes me feel like I’m explaining something to my grand father whom is technologically challenged!

At the end of the day I like someone else here have been flying X-plane for a week now. I have to say, MSFS looked cartoonish when I went back this week compared to it. The weather in X-plane was menacing. I was terrified to fly into a line of clouds off the approach end in KATL. I don’t get that same visual representation or density of clouds in MSFS.

So, cool, another useless DLC, another water plane from the Great Depression era, another long explanation about how LOD works, another perfect example that Seb never has any clue about what the community is annoyed about. How in the hell does he not know about the threads on LOD culling, weather issues, I mean it’s summer is gone, so are we going to get a “there are no storms over Europe” comment when we mention this again in November?

It’s ridiculous!

The best part: Praetor, hands down.

Worst part: Weather/Clouds - deer in the headlights look from everyone, misunderstanding of the question, “we’re working on something” repeat since 5 years ago, and Meteoblue won’t let us. Ummm ok sure. But let’s talk about local legend 25 for 15 minutes……

At least we now know the culling debacle / landing gear issue was a hoax. Devs need to fix there planes.

As Jorg said at 1:18:53, they are working on the clouds but can't show their work yet.

From the tone of Jorg's voice, I get that it's a major project and overhaul. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in MSFS 2028 (or whatever the next version of MSFS is).

A 4000 PC and a 600 USD xbox will NEVER look the same (now it's more like 7000 USD and 1500 USD thanks to AI.... sigh).

And that is the core issue: why optimize for systems that people can no longer afford? They are likely focusing on performance not only for the consoles, but also for anyone buying a new computer these days. They aren't going to be able to bring in any new users if the new computers being purchased can't run the sim. Looking at what is readily available a Best Buy, <$2000 will get you 16-32GB of RAM and 8-12GB of VRAM. We are seeing memory downgrades in all hardware, from phones to laptops to gaming desktops.

I've said before, these settings should be adjustable for users with top end hardware, but it makes sense that they are optimizing for the lower end, because that is all that is somewhat affordable these days. We also have the Steam Machine release imminent: 16GB of RAM and 8GB of VRAM. It's going to be hugely popular, and it will likely bring MSFS to its knees.

Asobo had grand plans for weather, and it they were all shelved when injecting METAR data into the weather engine broke everything.

Exponentially better than FSX's 2D sprites only so many miles out. You're never going to have variety and detail w/ the current voxel rendering method. Right now what we have is very plausible visually and there is no way we will see anything substantially better until such time as a new rendering paradigm arrives to get around the massive performance burden of 3D voxel cloud rendering, or a major advance in hardware. IOW, get over it there is NO WAY they can make it much better than it already is.
