iFly 737 impressions and refund

Featured Replies

I think if it is installed, then they ask you to uninstall it, but I don't think it would stop working if you didn't. I don't know that for sure because I've never actually returned anything to Flight 1, but I had a buddy who returned their ATR-72 (after I'd recommended it to him), and I seem to recall him saying that was how it worked, he did uninstall it because it wasn't performing properly on his system for some reason which we could not figure out. I could be wrong about this though, since it was about two years ago, and I might have misunderstood him.If that is so then I guess you could be cheeky and keep it installed, but that would in fact then be stealing, so I'd not recommend doing so, especially since stealing from a company that has your credit card details is probably not a great idea LOL.Al
That is what happened when I returned something, but that was in the pre-copy protection days. Don't know if that has changed now.... You would hope so..G

If someone wants to return it, that's fair enough, it is the deal under which it is sold. It seems to me though, that some of these might have been user issues, for example the speed brake not being animated and not seeing it move - mine certainly does. Similarly, I don't think adding repaints is especially tricky, in fact I have already done a repaint of it and it was no more difficult to add it than any other I've ever done, just slightly different. As far as sounds go, I can pretty much guarantee everyone who keeps it would probably add the TSS CFM56-7B sound set anyway.Al
Ditto. I too have just done a BA repaint without any probs at all.

Well if it isn't and people kept it on there, one assumes they'd be screwed when it got patched.

In which case, be sure to stick a screenshot of it in the competition they've got running on the support forums.Al

You know--the plane is really nice and I like it and all but..................................the bathroom door is not modeled so eff it--I got a refund.:(

"Well, what better way to signal the developer that they have work to address."By working with them on their forums and making it very clear where the issues are. Simply refunding your purchase tells the developer nothing and doesn't help the situation in any way other than getting your money back 24 hours after you spent it. It is of course your option to do so, but I just can't make much sense from it. I just hope others that have things they'd like to see improved/fixed/updated use a different approach. Then possibly some good can come from it.

Seems like there's a lot of gamma testing going on.... :(

Sheesh... what's the point in using Flight1's generous refund offer if people are just going to gang up on you for using it? rolleyes.gif

I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, I just don't understand the beating this plane is taking. On a general level, it exceeds Aerosoft and Captain Sim aircraft, is on par with (I believe better) the QW 757 and is comming up on the likes of PMDG, LDS and Leonardo.Visually it is very nice overall. I'd say it's VC is on par with the PMDG MD-11, but certainly not up to the standards of the JS41 (and probably the NGX as well). Externally it is quite nice overall, but will not compete with Captain Sim (some of the best external models I've seen). It's not ground breaking, but easily holds it's own with all but the top releases out there.Systems wise it appears excellent! I have not found one button yet that doesn't function. I can verify that major systems interact as they should, however I am not a 737NG expert. I don't know if systems are modeled to the correct electrical bus, if the brakes cool at the right rate, etc.The flight dynamics feel very good. It is smooth and easy to fly. Never having flown an NG, this is about all I can say. It definitely feels right though.Sounds are very good based on the current market. It does sound like some of anticipated future aircraft will end up with some better sounds, but the engines sound very similar to what I recall on my few NG rides in real life.Performance is good for a complex add-on. On my system, it is better than the PMDG 744, JS41 and Leonardo Maddog. It is worse than the LDS 763 (which is very aged in terms of the VC graphics demand). It is roughly on par with, but better than the PMDG MD-11. I reliably get 22-25 fps in the VC on the ground/gate running REX OD, GEX, ASE, UT2 at 90% at FSDT/FlyTampa/FlightBeam airports on my i7 at 3.5GHz and GTX 285 system (not modest, but not topline either). There are bugs, but I've never bought a product without bugs yet. None of them are substantial or interfere with a basic flight. The iFly team has been very responsive and is fixing or already put out hotfixes for many of them. I guarantee that the other upcoming NGX will have bugs as well (although I do expect them to be pretty minor). Given that they were working on both FS9 and FSX, did so in 24-30 months, did so as an unestablished company and without the huge support of Boeing, I think they did a fantastic job. Will it compare to the other NGX? Only time will tell. It is unlikely to equal it, but I really don't see any areas that can be so substantially improved upon as to make this offering irrelevant. In fact, I believe the only two areas you will find any real differences at all are the HUGS and "by the numbers" systems (i.e., hydraulic pressure decaying at the exact real rate). Regarding the HUGS, they have already promised updates to colimate this (the major limit) and many people fly NG's that aren't even equiped with this system. Regarding the "by the numbers", well the relative scarcity of 737NG type rated pilots in the FS community I think means few people will really see this.Overall, this was a job very well done by iFly. I congratulate them and look forward to any future aircraft.

The biggest disappointment was that many buttons while they made a click sound, did not provide an actual "sound". For example, the attendant call button emits a click but nothing else. Ditto for several others. Not deal breakers, but the immersion takes a hit. The speedbrake lever is not animated in the sense that you see it move-- instead it is off/on. Again not a deal breaker, but it's those small details that erode believability. The engine sound I thought was not very good. I was getting the "swooshing" surround sound that some of the lesser quality soundsets give.
I just wanted to highlight a couple of things that you mentioned. The reason that the attendant button doesn't make the noise you're accustomed to is because it is not heard in the real flight deck either. I am very confused about your speedbrake lever and engine sounds comments. You are literally the 1st person out of thousands that has ever mentioned anything about the speedbrake lever only going on/off...and we have had nothing but praises for the engine sounds. YOUR immersion factor is from seat 12A, but it is not necessarily how things really are. Also, you are not getting bashed because you took advantage of the refund, but because you sound like you bought the 737 with the intentions of returning it without even giving it a chance. Did you mention any of your issues in the forum? Did you do anything other than install it, boot it up, take it on the pattern, and then request a refund?
Don't take my review for word though, as I hope everyone is able to try the iFly themselves.
Then what was the point of your review??!?! That's what reviews are for...to take somebodies word on a product.

I bought this plane and I think I was going to keep it but I am having many issues.. I am having a lot of issues from poor frame rates, to VC issues. For example some of the knobs like the ones for changing speed and altitude on the mcp loose their definition. I really can't explain it and it seems random, they will be fine and then all of a sudden they are grey blobs? VC frames are so bad for me at times that I had to switch to the 2d panel. The funny part about the frames in vc that too seems to be random, I have had good frames in high density airports and horrible frames in empty airports?? I am having another issue with sound too, no matter how hard I slam this plane down there is little to no touchdown sound until I activate the reversers. I am having a very hard time telling when I land even if I SLAM the plane to the runway. Overall the product has a lot of potential, but I think they may have rushed it a bit to beat a certain other product to the market

Have you visited the forums for help? There is a known error in the sound file missing the touchdown sound. They've already posted a hotfix. Regarding loosing the knob textures/definition, have you used any other complex add-ons in FSX? This sounds like the fairly well known texture corruption issues with FSX.

EDIT! I apologize to Ifly. I posted about this problem on release day and they already fixed it and posted the fix in my thread but I did not see it. Since they fixed that so fast I will keep the product, I am impressed.

Sorry to the OP but just seems like you bought it to return it. I know alot of the add ons I have come to love today I was ready to return within 10mins in the cockpit! Its really weird how some add ons grow on you.

I think it is pretty obvious why... B) :( (NOT going to go there though)IFly has done a wonderful job with this product. I am very happy to support such a dedicated development team with my money. Sure, it may not end up being as detailed as the PMDG version, but it is a damn nice airplane, and an unbelievable first payware for them. Congratulations, iFly! I cannot wait to see what you guys make in the future. :( :( :Applause:My biggest beef with it is the FPS when the mouse cursor is active. By comparison, the MD-11 is about 10 fps better on my system. They seem to be working on the issue though, so we'll see. Regardless, I will not get a refund. IFly has definitely earned my dollars. If the PMDG version is no better on FPS in FSX, I will continue using the iFly one in FS9. It is far better than the old PMDG version.

Oh btw. lets just recapitulate for a second:Some people complaining about the spoiler lever, and that when you press #, it doesn't go smoothly down.Lets go about 10 years back to the time when PMDG released their first 737 - spoiler lever not only that it was buggy, but it was not deploying upon touchdown if you armed it with shift+#! You had to manually open the 2D panel, and click the darn thing with the mouse... Talk about realism.I'm aware we have come a long way, but still - those things people complain about - SMALL THINGS!!FPS is an issue an is being adressed: there are people behind all these things and all people, everyone, make mistakes.
