15MAR13 - Let the Previews Begin!

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Actually there is a reason why the gear is down this early in the approach. It is a requirement when landing on runways 34L/R at Narita. According to the approach charts that I have here, it states:

Jeppsen ATC Procedures 20-9L section b: Gear down operation on approach to Rwy 34L / Rwy 34R - Unless the safety of the flight will be compromised, aircraft on approach to Rwy 34L / Rwy 34R from the sea- shore are required to complete gear down and locked prior to IYQ 12.3 DME (NRE 14 DME) for Rwy 34L and ITJ 13.6 DME (HKE 15 DME) for Rwy 34R. This requirement is intended to prevent ice blocks from falling to the ground from the aircraft.

There you have it, gears must be down and locked early to prevent ice blocks from falling from the aircraft onto populated areas.

Well, if you're going to quote official documents ... ha ... very interesting story about the ice chunks.  Sometimes the reasons are very good, but not obvious.  Thanks for the info.

Nah not when you have friends in the airline industry who give you their old charts when they update the pages... so I have basically a near complete set of airport charts but they're outdated though, the NRT charts are from 2011.

I very much would like the iPad version since this is 3 books worth of charts I have sitting in the book shelf....

Ah yeah that's always handy! I still see an appeal for paper charts - however the weight and room it removes from your flight bag must be nice on a day-to-day basis. Lots more room for some chocolate digestives!  B)

iPad's are pretty neat though - especially when you have all your charts in one file and can elegantly switch through them as they're all bookmarked. Makes for an easier process when getting a last minute runway change or something!  When I'm flying VFR it can be nice too, especially in places where I'd switch from a TAC to SEC!

I do however prefer paper enroute charts - even on my iPad 3 it takes some time to load up if I want to move from one place on the chart to another. Mainly being because the Navigraph/Navtech ones are such heavy files - hopefully the new iPad will run it a little better. Or could just be the Adobe Reader app!  ^_^

Well, about updated charts. Unfortunately I'm used to fly with outdated charts, especially to those destinations which you can't find charts on the web and have no dedicated VATSIM website, where to find updated ones. Obviously it's almost impossible to find updated Jeppesen on the web for free. I use FS Kneeboard 2 for iPad for my fligths and except for USA, I don't have updated charts

And there are some more for other parts of the world, i.e.

Australia: http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/aip.asp

New Zealand: http://www.aip.net.nz/

United States: http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/ (although, as I see, one cannot access SID/STAR in the US AIP)

Cheers,

Already registered! Thank you very much for the link. I didn't knew it.

Markus,

Thanks a lot, especially for New Zealand and Australia charts links. Fortunately charts for USA are easily reachable vía FS Kneeboard 2 app or going direct to faa.gov website; and you can find all SID/STARs for all US airports

That's because the FAA's website is laid out in an... shall we say "interesting" manner. The charts are here: http://aeronav.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=aeronav/applications/d_tpp

Or: http://aircharts.org Or Flight Aware, AirNav, Sky Vector and a hundred other places.

I don't like it! I will stick with the fs2002 stock 777.

I think it's much more realistic!

B)

Guess most of you remember this one. It flew pretty much like a jet fighter and sounded horribly lot like your mother's vacuum cleaner!

Seriously: Fantastic work PMDG, can't wait for this one!

Maybe you'd like to regress a bit further. How 'bout Flight Sim 1.0? Remember Meigs Field?

I've been flying these things since the Sublogic days, on a Commodore 64 with dual 5.25" floppies. And like everyone else, I cannot wait for this 777 to hit the market! Meanwhile, back to the 737NGX!

Thanks for the information regarding the FAA and the US Charts. After searching their webpage without success, I believed that (for whatever reason) they excluded SID/STAR procedures. Glad that I can access them online as well.

Oh man, most people have no idea!!! FS5 is what really got me into this back when I was 14 or so. Meigs field is flight simulation Mecca! I was so sad back in the 90s when I learned it was closed. MS should have bought the field and it should now be a sactuary for all of us to enjoy.

Sorry man, if you can't put it in a Pilot's log book, she's a game! :P

I think that FSX can be either...  Have you tried Pilot Edge online service?  http://www.pilotedge.net/

In fact I know that my FSX time flying on instruments has helped me learn all about them...  I'll even say I can fly an ILS under the hood better than my coworker who almost had his instrument rating but hasn't flown on instruments for a long time.  We flew approaches where I work traffic and his were pretty sloppy... mine were pretty good.

I agree and also use it to stay unofficially "up to speed" for my own Instrument Rating, but I cannot log it nor use the time for recency requirements, so on that basis, while it is useful, it is still a game. Enough on semantics, to each their own!
