Think this and REX4 texture package that will be out this week will be a home run. Hope the REX4 textures work Ok with ASN.

  • $50/$30 and no textures..  Gotta pass on that..  Did the same for Opus.. Weather depiction alone isn't worth that much to me.. AS2012 will stay

  • Yesterday I tried to make a comparison between ASN and Opus. I have been using Opus with full satisfaction for the last year and I was curious to compare it with ASN, after all the hypes and comments

Guys, can you point me a nice set of clouds lighter on fps than rex ones?

I'm already with dtx5 1024 resolution, but as I pointed in a previous post, flying with the ngx I'm getting very low performance when flying into big packs of clouds.

Although, if I'm inside of fog, the fps are normal...

No need tun REX at all as long as you do not want to change textures.

If so, run REX, change textures, close REX, run ASN and FSX

Ok, Thank You for the Information!!!!

Have you changed any of the default cloud options in ASN?

Cheers, Andy.

Does ASN intoduce a "global weather" of a sort where every other ai aircraft will experience the same weather as you regardless of height/location etc??

I don't think it is doing that. It sounds like it is merely the visibility effect which might be 'global'. I suspect that it is using the same trick as I used in FSUIPC3 to implement graduated visibility -- a way of directly setting visibility as seen from your view. In FS9 it was the best way to get the right effects and to give proper visibility changes in clouds.

So, it isn't so much the weather being set but the view on your screen being subjected to visibility limitations, no matter where you are looking from. I expect ASN could detect when you move your viewpoint and adjust it dynamically to suit, but I don't know if it would be worth the effort. Maybe you can ask HiFi directly?

Pete

One thing I keep seeing with ASN is weather that looks like this :-

11111.jpg

Some clouds but then absolutely straight visibility down to the surface.   This pic was taken near PAVD in Alaska and ok the weather is not particularly poor in terms of visibilty at the moment, but I stopped ASN at this point and re-activated Opus weather and it did add a fine mist or haze or whatever you would call it, so that the space between the clouds and the ground was a little more gradual, and a little less jarring.

I saw almost the same thing in Norway with ASN yesterday.

So far, I do like the interface and the fact that the aircraft doesn't get a good bashing during weather updating, but I am not seeing anything particularly visually striking yet, as others seem to be.     Nothing at all that would cause me to spend over $50 when I already own Opus.        I wonder if I am flying in the wrong places compared to those of you on this thread who are jumping at excitement with this program?

Dave, what makes you think what is being depicted by ASN is wrong? I could actually give you examples of what you expected to see, generated with ASN, but it all depends on the situation.

This sort of scatered cumulus "network", is typical of most RW situations. In soaring we like it a lot, although specially when they get organized in cloud streets due to wind variation with altitude...

Continue searching for other weather situations around the Globe - using the Search function is my preferred way... - and you will eventually find what you have described...

I can't comment on Opus since I do not own it, so I won't even try to write anything about Opus vs ASN....

Hi Dave,

I really don't like the cloud set your using, your cloud draw needs up'ing as well. Looks like scattered clouds to me and it can be clear at the same time.

Best thing to do IMHO is load your local airport and look out the window.

If you don't think no wild wind shifts, no weather re draw, no true radar and a engine that can ajust your cloud draw distance for you is not worth the upgrade then each to there own mate. I bet you have a ton of aircraft you never use, ASN you will use every time you fly.

Goto cloud draw option set 60 min and 120 max that will cover you from a GA to a 737/777. ASN will then work out what you need to not get that edge you have in your SS.

Can ASN be started with FSX like OPUS? Or do I have to set it up before opening FSX?

ASN controls the weather completely, it doesn't matter whether you have turbulence on or not in the FSX settings menus, ASN will still enable it as required, so in fact you may not be seeing effects from other addons but rather ASN's effects.

I was replying to the question about my settings. Accufeel enhances turbulence effect (it may not correctly work with ASN) but most of all adds rumbling sounds :)

Hi David, I do appreciate what you're saying and my cloud draw is at 90 miles, but increasing it to 120 will affect performance negatively on my "not state of the art" system.       Opus recommend a 90 miles cloud draw and their engine is optimized to work best with that setting.

My textures are Zinnertek, I do own REX but haven't used it for years for the same performance reason.

I appreciate the ASN is not responible for my less than exciting cloud textures but the main thing I was showing in that screenie was just how 'off/on' the weather looks;   eg, some scattered clouds but then nothing, down to the ground;  where Opus was setting some mist, or haze of whatever.

I'll continue to play around and trust me, I will be a very happy man to be able to come here and shout halleluyia and to be getting some great results.    I've not bought a FS addon for over 2 weeks and I'm craving to pull the trigger on something exciting but so far I'm seeing underwhelming visuals.      I'll keep playing around.

Dave,

Set your max cloud draw distance higher than the 90 NM default in the settings, or alternately, turn down your max upper visibility to 90NM

You can start ASN after FSX has started. Did that yesterday without any issues.

And stay away from the poles, all clouds look crap the nearer you get to them because they get compressed horizontally. And that doesn't matter what weather engine you are using.

Cheers, Andy.
