he only aspect where I see fsgrw looses out to asn is when updating the weather, fsgrw flickers the screen top for a second... other than that, I don't see a reason to change from fsgrw to asn! :-)

As far as I know FSGRW doesn't have custom turbulence effects and such. While ASN has improved in many areas really the way how it makes bad weather flying actually challenging is what is the real game changer for me.

  • $50/$30 and no textures..  Gotta pass on that..  Did the same for Opus.. Weather depiction alone isn't worth that much to me.. AS2012 will stay

  • Yesterday I tried to make a comparison between ASN and Opus. I have been using Opus with full satisfaction for the last year and I was curious to compare it with ASN, after all the hypes and comments

Active Sky updated weather the same way as FSGRW for the last two iterations (ASE and AS2012) that caused flashing skies. It was called "standard depiction". The weather was more accurate this way, but the trade off was the flashing sky and resultant stutters it caused.

ASN uses a module, much like FSUIPC, to hook into FSX and actually take control of the weather engine.

So, as it stands, FSGRW, Opus, REX, AS2012, ASE all tell FSX how to set the weather within the rules FSX allows.

ASN, in contrast, takes over the FSX weather engine and manipulates it and takes no bull from FSX and its flawed sense of weather! :)

It's a very basic sense of what it does, but three years of cracking FSX results in a much more involved process under ASN's hood. :)

Haven't tried the demo yet, but I wonder if part of all this is just a placebo. It's the latest n greatest thing. OPUS release was just like this thread. I think I'll give ASN some time to mature before I try the demo.

What the heck for? Try it now and get it over with - if you don't like it (you will) then you don't have to wait for maturity - you can fly along as you are.

I'm always very skeptical myself of new releases like this.  I honestly can say this really is a big jump for weather programs. No flashes during updates, no wind shifts, no sudden changes in cloud depiction as a result of METAR updates (the transitions are smooth,) dynamic turbulence, up/downdrafts etc that actually remind me of flying.. it really is that good.

We can all talk about how great one weather program is better than another weather program or has this fantastic feature and another weather program does not, but, the bottom line is that competition is good!  I am so far very impressed with Active Sky NEXT.  I'm looking forward to a P3DV2 version.

Completely agree... In the end, competition is great for us consumers because we have options among many fantastic products!

Don't really care that ASN doesn't come with textures as some are complaining about...I use the HDEv2 freeware cloud/sky package which is better then any REX or AS2012 cloud/sky texture sets, and I've tried them all.

The HDEv2 freeware package is the most realistic out there IMO.

Agree, its better looking and more realistic than any payware option. I have REX, FEX and AS2012's textures and HDEv2 still looks more convincing than any of those.

The fact that ASN has seemingly removed wind and pressure shifts has me sold.  OPUS, whilst a good program, recently has been a nightmare for wind and pressure shifts recently, spoiling a lot of flights.  Everything is just smooth as silk with ASN so far.

Just have to chime in here

i hunted down some snowy/stormy weather in wyoming somewhere, i loaded up the default fsx cesna and dis a quick take off

awesome

complete whiteout

barely landed

and went to turn the plane around again for another take off

when suddenly a gust of wing tipped the plane mid turn ha

needless to say flight was over

Did anyone notice a FPS hit?  I run practically everything on max and have been using AS2012 and haven't had any FPS issues but ASN seems to have a quite a bigger hit on FPS for some reason over AS2012.

I also seem to be getting the importing of clouds in textured patterns and holes in the overcast layers.  See attached pic.  My cloud coverage density is also set to 8 and distance set to the default 90.  The pic was also taken over the snowstorms currently in the NE.

ASN and flying through clouds is amazing so hopefully I can get this issue fixed and it will be an insta-buy.

I didn't change any ASN settings from default.

I actually seem to be getting better FPS running it locally than I did with as2012, but I do get the grid pattern as well. Not sure if they can either fix it or mask it somehow.

Anybody getting an API.dll error on closing FSX with the latest version of FSUIPC ? Using the latest one from Pete's site to work with ASN. FSUIPC Version 924.

Have gone back to previous version, and all good.
