February 14, 201412 yr I see a problem in the first lines, Windows 8.1... I wonder is there anyone else having the same issues as you running W7. Another generalization - no issues with Win 8.1 with addons (actually probably one of the reasons I haven't seen OOMs either). I also did the upgrade path without a clean install...yes that's just asking for it but hey
February 14, 201412 yr I found, as mentioned previously in this thread.. that turning of ftxg vector lighting saved 1.5-2 fps overall. February 14, 201412 yr Just installed the patch over a clean install....and it is a very stable platform. I am very excited about the future of this platform and look forward to ASN and PMDG releases down the road. FSX is finally uninstalled. About the only regret for me is upgrading my OS to Win 8.1. I think I will downgrade to Win7x64 Ryan Kelly
February 14, 201412 yr I did some explorimenting (exploring/experimenting) today and this evening. My system seemed like it was powerful enough - 3570k (O/C'd to 4.2 GHz so far), 8 GB RAM, P3D2.1 on an SSD, EVGA GTX 650 Ti Boost SC. I read how most flyers/simmers are maxed out on settings and traffic and getting smooth results. I haven't been able to do that and, until I did some changes to P3D2.1 display settings, I was getting some major stutters on the ground and in-flight. So far I found, on my setup at least, turning OFF shadows helped a great deal. I also removed the reflections under the water settings. I don't need them. I mean, it's "pretty", but I'd rather fly. I was able to add 10% road traffic and minimum airport vehicle density. The stuttering went away. Terrain LOD is Ultra, High Tessellation Factor, 5m Mesh Resolution, 60cm Texture Resolution...Very Dense Scenery Complexity, Normal Autogen Vegetation and no autogen buildings (I don't see a point to them). Low special effects and no Bathymetry. No stutters, no OOMs, and frame rates - for those keeping track - vary between 29fps minimum up to 72fps depending on the aircraft. Yes I would like to add traffic, shadows and other eye candy options, but right now, it's smooth and stutter free. I am using the latest nVidia beta drivers. I think that once nVidia recognizes P3D it will be much better.

I also did the upgrade path without a clean install...yes that's just asking for it but hey  Totally agree ... Win 8.1 isn't the issue. I'm running P3D2 with Win 8.1 and have had less issues than many others here who are using older versions of Windows. The joystick issue was covered at the P3D forums. Apparently your joystick isn't listed until after you have run v.2.1 once and then loaded your default flight. ~ Arwen ~ Home Airfield: KHIE
February 14, 201412 yr Some cleanout this evening. Latest version of FSUIPC installed, cleaned the Prepar3D generated files as I should have done (RTFF ... the forum I mean). Reinstalled the dxl.xml, exe.xml and standard.xml and that was about it.... ready to go... no tweak to prepar3d.cfg... Out for a flight with the Duke Turbine, very pleased with the results. But I will have to make the jump one day to upgrade my 580 3GB x2 cards. I will still a couple of months to see if Nvidia is coming with something to optimize my current hardware. Beside my favorite airplane, opus, fsuipc, spad, linda.... no scenery added yet and I will leave it like that for a while and just enjoy flying... PierreP3D when its freezing in Quebec....well, that's most of the time...C-GDXL based at CYQB for real flying when its warming up...
February 14, 201412 yr Gentlemen After trying everything I know how to do I cannot get rid of micro stutters . Has nothing to do with fps or any settings in display. With all settings at minimum or far left and 80 to 120 fps ,the stutters are still there. Am very shocked because they were not there until after update. If anyone is not getting stutters, please post what you did to remove them. Regards Denny

I do not understand how LM could say that they found a solution, but it is actually worse (at least that is what several people are reporting.) Well, hopefully I get a change to install this weekend and I hope I can be one of those who has favorable results. I do have to say that a lower autogen radius is a cause of concern for me. Hope all turns out well though. REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations
February 14, 201412 yr Not being a programmer, there must be a reason for this. I have the same situation. I look at the usage of both the CPU and the GPU and there seems to be room to spare. I must be missing something about how things work on the inside. I agree and have commented about this early on w/ P3D V2. What we have is a system not designed from the ground up while attempting to retain a high degree of backwards compatibility. I think this may be the general reason for why we see this behavior. Can you imagine a whole new native 64-bit engine, perhaps with very similar components that the new rendering engine exploits, and to have native 64-bit add ons fully designed to work optimally with that new core? I'd jump in in a heartbeat and never look back. We can still enjoy the current P3D offerings, but there is much room for improvement still, if one had the funding and vision. Heck, I'd even go back to FSX if LM decided to go down that path. February 14, 201412 yr There's probably more people reporting none....the old saying applies "mileage will vary"...some people are hell bent on having all sliders to the right because they could do so in FS9 and FSX and then complain because this different SIM doesnt perform the same. Worse part is, people START using this sim with all sliders to the right and then move slowly left. I prefer the other way...start from the left and gradually increase until I get a good compromise of visual against performace. Not saying it is the way to go, but in my view, if your expectations are higher than what your sliders can do, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict

No matter how many times that someone posts this advice, it still gets ignored by many, for some reason. NickN's "bible" has the same advice: De-tune the display settings and then work your way "up".
February 14, 201412 yr This is the point. Regardless of all the nice looking graphical features, 18 to 24 fps at a busy airport with a plain vanilla install on high end hardware (GTX 780) is ridiculous! And it even gets more ridiculous when you look at GPU and CPU utilization. What's so difficult to understand about it? It has nothing to do with insane settings or whatsoever. Most people here are so excited about P3D2 that they don't see the facts. Sorry to be bold. I also love the look of P3D but right now it is just not working properly... The airports you're talking about are P3D v2.1 certified? Spirit
February 14, 201412 yr Cure for my stutters - first, turn off FTX Global vector lights. Thanks to whoever posted that tip (and sorry I don't recall who it was - I should, but this has been a flood of information). Oh and incidentally, FTX Global looks much better without vector lights. There are far fewer FTX Glow-balls (which I should credit to another Avsim friend but again, I can't recall who came up with it). Second, set vegetation density to normal (I'd meant to do this, but was setting up in a hurry and got my building and vegetation sliders reversed). With those two fixes, I'm able to work with some shadows, HDR lighting, and to an extent, volumetric fog. Am still investigating the latter - it still bogs down in overcast, with some aircraft, and with Opus instead of native themes. I'll probably have to throw a new video card at it to cure it for good, but it's a start. My sense tonight - one day in - is that with the stutters addressed, overall performance is a bit smoother in 2.1 than in 2.0. But the experiments will continue. February 14, 201412 yr I did some more testing tonight and sadly I ran into a case of the stutters again (in any view) -- I thought I had it solved, but apparently not. Be sure to watch full screen at 1080p or higher and you can see my fps is 23.9-24.0 stable but I'm still getting considerable stutters. I was able to duplicate this with just about any aircraft including the default Carenado A36. I've tried every possible combination and of settings and nVidia Settings and I'm not having any luck solving this. Unlimited, VSync, lower display settings, fresh full install ... so far nothing has worked. As you can see from my video, just ocean and clouds (not even that many) and I'm stuttering ... but the key is that my fps aren't fluctuating so definitely something odd going on. I even thought maybe it was some controller problem, so I flew keyboard ONLY and still same issue. I've reported this to LM in their forums: http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=5533#postid-27080 At this point I'm baffled ... pretty rare I can't find a solution to a P3D problem, but this one has me stuck. Just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, I wiped V2.1 and re-installed V2.0 full and did the same flight and no stutters at all. Just don't know where to go from here ... stick with V2.0 I guess ... maybe specific to my Titan (I'm running the latest nVidia drivers - not Beta ones). Cheers, Rob.
