Lockheed Releases P3D V2.1

Featured Replies

FSX was poorly coded and it took almost 6 years to get it running the way it should have ran when it was released but now it's so old that it can't utilize new hardware to it's full potential. We than waited for P3D V2 which we all had high hopes because it was suppose to run on current hardware but it's also starting to look like a performance dud with a lot of underlying issues. Makes you wonder what supercomputer was used to make this software because if the company producing it has issues with performance like 99% of the people buying this software than why release it?

Not only has flight simming become a very expensive hobby but it's also become extremely frustrating and very time consuming. I spend more time "tweaking" than I do flying. When I finally have everything running the way I want, something goes wrong. I know we will probably never see a new sim built from the ground up because of the cost and return factor but it would be nice to have software that actually runs on current hardware and with personal computers slowly dying off and moving towards tablets it makes you wonder how much longer we'll have new hardware to keep supporting our hobby.

/end rant.

i think you'll find LM run P3D on PCs very similar to ours, the issue, as always, is addons

Out of the box, vanilla P3D is a veritable masterpiece

OT : Personal computers aren't really dying off, they're just returning to a critical mass of people who actually need that form factor, which people like Microsoft, Dell, Hp etc don't seem to realize. Their business models were built on forever increasing sales of PCs, they don't seem to be able to adjust to the fact that a lot of people only need a tablet, and are resorting to hysterical proclamations of PCs dying, mainly because they're now decided it would be in their interests for that to happen as they've foolishly changed their business models to that of hosted services and thin/small clients.

But that doesn't mean Personal computers are dying off, far from it, in fact they've never been in better health, they're just not generating the revenues these companies want.

I'm very sad reading this thread, I uninstalled v1 after little success and decided to wait for v2. Having read about further issues, it looks like I'll be sticking with FSX for the foreseeable future.

Howard,

I think I am quite open-minded and progressive and have been an active supporter of Prepar3d 1.4 and 2. I was in hope the recent 2.1 patch would cure the remaining issues, which it mostly did, however in my (and some other people's) case it introduced several new annoyances like memory leaks, occasional CTDs for whatever reason, popping autogen again etc. And this is with Prepar3d ready software only, no migration tool magic in my case. Maybe there may be issues we – the users – are responsible for by not keeping to the instructions (any, yes, I deleted the suggested directories in advance of installing the patch). However, I can hardly imagine there are so many dumb Prepar3d users out there being responsible for all these issues.

Add the fact that I will not be able to use quite an amount of paid ORBX addons for the foreseeable future, despite I acknowledge ORBX putting quite some resources into that. As I read, the recent patch broke their achievements again, which IMHO is inacceptable given ORBX having been a core supporter of LM from the outset. Plus, the ATC window being still opaque and so ugly I dare to use it compared to its FSX counterpart. So, I am really thinking about re-installing FSX, too.

I am not yet so far, but I am thinking about it. I still have my tweaked FSX files which did quite well at the end, and then I could start just flying instead of debugging.

Kind regards, Michael

Absolutely, my thoughts entirely Michael. The issue I have is that, overall, I am pretty pleased with how I've got FSX running. I get the occasional CTDs, and I mean occasional, usually after a new tweak or something, I run with an LOD of between 5.5 and 6, depending on the scenery, Autogen popping is a bit of a nuisance, as is cloud loading, but these things don't spoil my flying, as it seems to do for some some others. In fact I am so immersed in my flying that these things are not a deal breaker. Sure, in a perfect world we'd all like everything to work flawlesssly, but simming, and in particular FSX most certainly is not a perfect, as we all know, and P3D is no different.

The issue I have is that of sacrifice. Do I really want to sacrifice, what seems to be a mass of addons that won't work properly, for gaining some advantage over autogen popping or the way water looks. Actually, after loading v1 I thought the water was a complete waste of time in P3D, even after many attempts to make it look OK. For me it was far, far better in FSX. BTW, I must add, I have FSX running stutter free and is exceedingly smooth. So this is my predicament, the benefits for me personally, simply do not outweigh the sacrifices, at this moment in time.

As stated earlier . No add ons pure vanilla p3d2 with updates micro stutters , no matter what settings in display, far right far left fps 24 or 80 with all display far left 80 to 100 fps with clear skies, cannot stop these stutters check my pc. Plenty power to run either fsx or p3d. Before update no stutters . after update  stutters.  I repeat no addons . Rob,glad you posted to Lockhheed on this.

Do any Win8/8.1 users have these types of stutters ?

I'm running P3D2.1 on Win 8.1 and I'm not getting any of those studders.

I also turned off FTX Global vector lights, mainly because they are way too big, and are applied to too many roads (rural road do NOT have street lights). But I did see a small FPS increase after removing these lights. I also have the autogen vegetation set to normal most of the time (but bump it up to high in more rural/wilderness areas).

I'm personally going to wait until my next big upgrade before I switch to P3D. Probably by then (roughly 2015-2016) they should have 64-bit and or proper SLI support, so this next system I build will be able to handle it.

It's not a big deal for me though. FSX runs great. DX11, and all the new features would be nice, but they come at a cost.

Huge cost, I might add.  You would have to buy new licences for PMDG and others, wait and pray that your add-ons scenery developers will update.  I currently don't see any benefit.  I also stopped invest anything into FSX and just use it as is until it does not work any more with future OS.  I have enough of tweaking and sworn off touching FSX, which is why I don't buy any more FSX add-ons.  Good luck for those early users of P3D V2.  Peace.

There is a small issue I found. The P3D installer sometimes fails to install legacy Simconnect drivers. I was getting very frustrated with my FSDreamteam stuff, none of it worked. I manually selected them and bingo, all good.

That might explain my TrackIR not working...? How do you manually select them?

Just an observation based on a flight in cloudy conditions i have just taken which i will state in terms of pluses and minuses like so: Pluses - the way P3dv2 now runs on my machine, fluid and stable. The standard of weather apps(i use Opus which i can only say positive things about) ...  Minuses - only one but for me a biggie! ... here comes the ridiculous rain in all its stair-rod resembling glory, particularly when in spot view. So, all that work by all the parties concerned, for my money made a mockery of by the joke that is precipitation in the sim. In my travels round the flightsim sites there is growing momentum in a demand for a working Weather Guage ... how about first of all making the precipitation part of the weather in the sim even half believable ... LM any chance for the next patch .... please! ....

P3D DOES come with the FSX Simconnect libraries, for the precise reason to allow backward compatibility with FSX Simconnect clients, and they are supposed to be installed automatically.

They are located in these folders

\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2\redist\Interface\FSX-SP1\retail\lib

\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2\redist\Interface\FSX-SP2-XPACK\retail\lib

If for some reason they haven't been installed automatically by the P3D installer, you might try launching the .MSI files in those folders.

I think I've narrowed down my OOMs to either the vegetation slider or using AS2012 for weather. Both seem to cause VAS usage to steadily increase. Pulling the vegetation slider back to the middle position stopped the flickering trees in the rainforests, and kept VAS usage more steady (although, oddly, at a higher baseline of 2.05GB instead of 1.91GB).  It meant that there was a very noticable circle of trees out to about 8nm from plane position, but that's life, it still looks better than FSX.

Also using AS2012 for weather appeared to have a constant leakage of VAS - perhaps METAR strings aren't getting dropped from the sim. Using FSrealWX2 with a lower refresh rate gave good results without ballooning VAS.

Also winds with AS2012 seemed very wrong, so perhaps something it's doing is messed up. Hopefully ASn/P3D will come soon.

I'm still becoming very weary of P3D, after not being able to use it at all since december thanks to crashes, lack of working weather, and random other problems, to be left with a sim that is unpredictable and unreliable is a bad situation, whereas I haven't had a CTD in FSX for about a year.

The issue I have is that, overall, I am pretty pleased with how I've got FSX running.

Word Not Allowed made a great point in his blog the other day. Those who have FSX running well will be somewhat dissapointed with P3Dv2. Those who have FSX running poorly, will see an improvement in P3Dv2.

That is also my experience. FSX has never run better particularly with the current addon load. It may take a couple of years to get addon loaded P3Dv2 performance on par. And by then, we should be beta testing P3Dv64bit at the very least!!!

YES YES YES! Thanks for the heads up! TrackIR is working now! Shoot, should have known this a few hours earlier: would have saved me the system restore and reinstall of everything... ^_^ BTW It's odd that Simconnect didn't install both times I installed v2.1! But well, I am happy already that everything is working now. ^_^

OK,here we go.  Just did a clean fresh install of vs 2.1   FPS locked at 20, T/O in the fighter that loads by default, smooth as glass,no stutters,no pauses, nothing.  Did I say smooth?? at 20FPS!!!   Looks freaking amazing!!   Low level 400kt is awesome in this sim!   My lowly pc specs,i5-2500k oc 4.5G, 8G cheap ram, AsRock ExtremeB4 mobo, 660ti 2G video,2 SSD hdd,   This was built late 2010 by myself for 1K. The key is MATCHED components!  Does no good to have Titan card on an old mobo, or a fast cpu on a junk mobo,or etc etc you get the point.  I'm not trying to brag here but just stating the facts, you don't need a monster pc to run these sims, just a get a matched set of components.

I know a few post back guys were saying I was crazy that 20fps isn't smooth. Please stop by anytime and we will have  a beverage and fly for awhile to prove it. ;)  I am going to unlock the frames tonightandsee what it does.
