That has been my process since 2.0.  Seems to work well and following Rob's instructions have been key for my success in upgrading via patches.

Should the patch be located on a specific location before installing? I cant get it to work. It does say it updates but the processbar is rather fast and the files is not installed.

Thanks for heads up but it has problems with different orders in cfg-files. Anyway good catch.

Did you hear of an alternative software? Some intelligent diff checker. I'd be interested.

Thanks,

Dirk.

Thanks,

I guess one of the best is IDM UltraEdit/UltraCompare but it's not cheap. They offer a 30 days test period.

...I can't think of a reason why [i should upgrade to 2.4]as everything seems fine.

Jim

Nodding....yup I am lurking for a while to see how the consensus shakes out...

And me. Too many negative posts.I would seriously consider a delete of 2.3 and full install of 2.4 if people said that 2.4 is much better.2.3 is working great for me on my modest system

Sorry, Thanks Jim,

I should have asked if you had successfully PATCHED thusly;

PATCHED v2.0 > v2.1 > v2.2 > v2.3 > v2.4

with NO FULL VERSION INSTALLS ...ONLY PATCHES since 2.0?

Chas

Yes. And version changes confirmed along the way.

I Just read the suggested procedure to safely update P3D.  P3D should update the way X-Plane does.

I don't intend to take sides here because I run both of them and each has major features that the other is lacking so far.  However, LM could sure take a page from X-Plane's book when it comes to updating.

X-Plane has been running an (optional) public beta update series for the past several weeks to bring v10.2 up to v10.3.  Final version 10.3 was released just a few days ago.

X-Plane cautions that if you are going to participate in the beta, or in the final update for that matter, you should first back up your v10.2 files.  This is easily done because every file in the entire X-Plane program is located under a single master folder, in my case 40 GB in size, which can easily be copied to another location.  This is in contrast to P3D where files are splattered all over your hard drive.

The actual update couldn't be easier.  You download and run the installer which inspects every file in the program to determine which ones need updating. This is the longest part of the procedure and takes about 10 minutes on my average machine with average internet connection speed.  It then, with my permission, proceeds to update the files using 3 servers simultaneously.  This typically involves 100-200 MB of data and takes less than 5 minutes.

When the down load is completed the updated program is ready to run.  The P3D update is downright primitive by comparison,

So far with each P3D update (except v2-4) I have just run the Patch exe (As Admin) and it did all the work.

The last patch (ver 2.4)  was the first time I used a "backup" stuff first like Rob's procedure so that took 3 minutes.

Took three minutes to download from LM.

The exe took 12 min to do is calculation, then 7 minutes more to complete.

Copied Backedup up stuff back ... maybe three minutes.

Then I re-booted the PC before running P3D.

Not bad at all.

Now for user stuff like Active Sky and Ezdok, home networks e.g. ... some setups always need re-checking.

Like 3rd party aircraft ... apply the update .. if problems ...... reinstall the full product.
