July 19, 201510 yr It'll be awhile before we hit the 8 terabyte limit you can rest assured. 64bits acually allow for FAR more address space than that. The physical limit is 16 EXABYTES, that is astronomically huge. Motherboards and operating systems however put a limit on the VAS, Linux for example has a 128TB VAS limit and that's not even close to fully utilizing 64bits. Don't know what Window's limits are, but I'm sure its enough for a looooong time into the future. [edit] Windows 64-bit VAS limit is 8 terabytes, so you we're right on that Noel.
July 19, 201510 yr Wake me up when 64-bit w/ DIrectX 12 optimization debuts in P3D. These will mark a new age for this simulation and justifies losing the backwards compatibility IMO. Until enough content starts appearing, and it will, we are happy to be able to use what we have now, which still never ceases to amaze me...at least until the VAS horn blows right before TD.... There's a lot of upside and these two huge changes look potentially worth getting excited about. July 19, 201510 yr It's just that a few people in this thread seem to be almost against seeing a 64Bit version of P3D.... Other people are realistic and recognise that Lockheed Martin won't give us 64-bit until its commercial customers need it. Windows 64-bit VAS limit is 8 terabytes, In fact, the user-mode virtual address space for each 64-bit process is: x64: 8 TB Intel Itanium-based systems: 7 TB Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2: 128 TB https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx Gerry Howard
July 20, 201510 yr Meanwhile http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/19/lockheed-martin-sikorsky-black-hawk-helicopter-us-military I'm sure that's a sign we're gonna get a Blackhawk in P3D very soon
July 20, 201510 yr I dont "need" all that, 66% sliders is fine. What I do need is to finish the flight +1 Correct, 64-bit is not about wanting more and more. FPS etc is already good enough, just want to be able to complete a flight without the dreaded ding-ding-ding.
July 20, 201510 yr That's good because it was never purported to be a panacea, but it does address one giant issue in a very big way, and may open up the door to other benefits. Combined w/ DirectX 12 optimization, depending on how possible that will be w/ P3D: 'Now we know by how much: just by using DirectX, executives said, you'll see an additional 20 percent improvement in your graphics frame rate, and a drop in CPU utilisation to boot. On Thursday, Max McMullen, a principal development lead for Microsoft.... McMullen used the same Intel "Asteroids" benchmark in his presentation Wednesday, but demonstrated that the frame rate increased a more modest 20 percent. But the CPU consumption also fell from 25 percent to 9 percent as DirectX 12 asked the GPU to shoulder more of the workload.' Thats a theoretical benefit, applicable to a game that isn't P3D. It's also telling that it specifically refers to passing the load to the GPU. So what is given with one hand WILL be taken back with the other. And the understanding of the user will be key to unlocking the performance improvement, or suffering from the backlash of a moving bottleneck. Everything I said before, stands. Let's just agree to wait and see, then one of us will be able to say `told you so`.
July 20, 201510 yr So what is given with one hand WILL be taken back with the other. We're discussing rebalancing work between available resources, better. My GTX Titan typically sits on the sidelines whereas my SB-E clocked to 4.44 is always 100% loaded. I can overload the GPU and max it out, but the visual benefits are exceedingly modest to unnoticeable. I would be happy to give much more to the GPU, and moreover, it's much simpler to upgrade a GPU than an entire machine, and moreover again, upgrades to single core performance have been pretty modest overall for the past many iterations. Much of the touted improvements in 2.1 or 2.2 had to do w/ moving more work to the GPU, and yet, I can be sitting at the gate in the QW757 at FB's KSFO, see a frame rate of 22, and my Titan is coasting along at a down clocked 821Mhz w/ a temp of 64, 29% GPU utilization reported. What a colossal waste of computing power, let alone the 10 other cores dedicated as terrain texture loaders hobbling along between 0 and 10%, at least til you're moving thru complex scenery.. If P3D is unable to exploit this 'theoretical' (and proven empirically it would appear for other apps) benefit then this points to the possibility the entire engine is too dated to move forward with the rest of technology. Agreed, we'll see, we hope. July 21, 201510 yr Noel, have you submitted your resume to LM? Perhaps they could use your expertise to custom code P3D more to your liking... B)
July 21, 201510 yr Noel, have you submitted your resume to LM? Perhaps they could use your expertise to custom code P3D more to your liking... B) You mean more of everyone's liking. Yes I did submit my resume and they politely declined saying I was overqualified and too visionary for their capabilities, so I wished them well and went on my merry way... July 21, 201510 yr I read all 18 pages, hoping to find out what's going on with P3D.That was probably a slight miscalculation on my behalf. Lots of good posts nonetheless, thank you! - Jens Peter "Penz" Pedersen
July 21, 201510 yr You mean more of everyone's liking. Yes I did submit my resume and they politely declined saying I was overqualified and too visionary for their capabilities, so I wished them well and went on my merry way... Wow, we are all fortunate to have such expertise in our midst. B)
July 21, 201510 yr Yes N400QW, it´s a pity that LM has not hired theese guys. If they had, we would probably have a P3D v6.7894 in a few weeks and in a 128-bit version. Not to mention, ALL the world, ALL airports in photo quality, ALL possible aircrafts and a lot of other exclusive stuff for FREE!!!!Sometimes i get really tired over the "messerschmidts" on this list, (at that time my whife tells me to go to bed) and mybe it´s time to do that now. In fact I don´t beleive I have ever before followed 18 pages of nonsense. Why did I do it? It gives me the laugh of the day!!!!! Jack then Swede ion Spain Jack J Jackson Castalla, Alicante, Spain
July 21, 201510 yr This has to be the funniest thread ever. We need some of the LM guys on AVSIM to post here too. Everyone should get in on the fun. Good distraction (for me and others, I hope) from busy work during the working hours. Definitely lightens my mood. Thanks How I Evaluate Third Party Sim Addon Developers Refined P3Dv5.0 HF2 Settings Part1 (has MaddogX) and older thread Part 2 (has PMDG 747)
