July 28, 201510 yr Why not offer both a 32-bit exe for backwards compatibility and an experimental 64-bit exe. It works for X-Plane and Euro Truck Simulator 2. That would allow the slow migration and please both (commercial) camps. It would also have the advantage of this community, who would jump at the chance for a 64-bit sim essentially beta testing it for the commercial customers. I know it would lead to additional work maintaining two paths essentially, but it still has many advantages. It is not quite as simple as that. The entire support structure of P3D would have to be completely redone to also support 64-bit. The .exe is not all that is 64-bit but think about every single .DLL file that must also be reworked. This will also no doubt introduce bugs everywhere because you are talking a huge change which will also down the line definitely cause people many problems at some point. I think because of this LM will avoid 64-bit whilst there is no outright need for it. The visuals achievable right now are astonishing compared to FSX whilst still OOM's are very avoidable, push it too far and it inevitably will crash of course but whilst simmers manage to avoid the OOM surely this makes a move to 64-bit irrelevant. Personally, I just can't see the justification for 64-bit and particularly the programming effort and expense that would be required to implement it not to mention the consequences. It would be far easier to instead completely rework the core autogen and other files so that the VAS footprint is reduced. Basically their biggest market will determine whether we see 64-bit, something tells me it is not something they see as important or it would be here and announced already. If anything I'm sure they need to first investigate as to whether it is even feasible to implement into what is at the core a decade old piece of code. Lawrence Ashworth
July 28, 201510 yr The best part of this thread is what the LM guys & gals in their offices are thinking. I bet they are laughing by reading this thread daily. We should make official AVSIM pool here on whose guess is correct. Rob can't participate as he is already testing their beta builds (I am always open to beta test too...will sign NDA, I can show how many times I have whacked my pc install and p3d just to get things done right). Day is going kinda slow - can't really do anything till tomorrow 2pm workwise. July 28, 201510 yr The potential to grow ESP to something massive is there. That is what I thought LM originally would intend to do. To grow ESP to what it probably was named after: "Earth/Environment simulation platform". (< my personal (and others') interpretation of the acronym). Suitable for air, ground, water and underwater (bathymetry) OPS: a scenario generator for SAR/combat etc. networked training in realtime... The roots were already there (FSX missions), they were enhanced (SimDirector), but somehow the road to a finished product seems (once again) longer than expected. But IMO most propably LM might operate an official and an unofficial version track of the final "ESP" product... The race between DTG's "new sim" (FSX:SE reloaded?), XP-10 and P3D is on. I am still wondering what the outcome of Mark Zuckerberg's acquisition of "Oculus Rift" (and the dedication to a visually 3D connected community) will be. https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10101319050523971 The giant leap towards "real 3D" virtual reality might be incorporated within XP-10 first (Austin Meyer: "soon the Rift or any other virtual 3D device", whereas the Rift is neglecting OpenGL ). http://www.flyaoamedia.com/aviatorcast-podcast/aviatorcast-episode-61-austin-meyer-of-x-plane-xplane-xavion-startup-software-flight-simulator-ios-android/ The Rift works fine with DirectX (and so with P3D) but a cooperation of a (now) Facebook "driven" company with LM is IMO quite "problematic". Mr. Zuckerberg has posted his own imagination of 3D networking (e.g. live 3D medical/surgical communication) which IMO puts both more towards a competitive than a cooperative relation. For me the company which has the first fully functionable (turnkey) system for 3D VR flight/world simulation would IMO have a huge competitive edge. In November 2013 I thought P3D would do so latest in summer 2014, now it's summer 2015. And "The Rift" launch is now expected 1Q 2016 earliest, more like 1st half of 2016... B) Claus KUEPPER

July 28, 201510 yr The giant leap towards "real 3D" virtual reality Hololens seems much more exciting, and immediately applicable, than the OR.

B) Would be just happy with the Vive later this year and FSX Flyinside supporting it (+p3d). I hope you are a backer Hololens seems much more exciting, and immediately applicable, than the OR. That is no VR Device, rather a Augmented Overlay with very very small Field of view (about 30 percent). It is sad that microsoft completely oversells the experience. Hololens is and will get very interesting but currently not what they try to suggest.
July 28, 201510 yr The giant leap towards "real 3D" virtual reality might be incorporated within XP-10 first LOL, is this before or after the seasons, realistic weather, environmental reflections, ATC, realistic airport layouts or Ai, just the basic stuff even FS9 had 10 years ago. I hope I live to see it but at 58 years old I don't have time to wait for Austin to wake up and realise how far behind he really is.

Before I read your post as I read the one above it, I was thinking the same thing that you just stated, the folks at LM probably laugh their asses off if they read some of the stuff posted on this thread about the about the world as we know it ceasing to exist without a 64 bit P3D...... :Applause:
