Beyond 10 miles

Despite all the flaws and pain FSX gave us, we could at least enjoy looking into the distance. When I fly in 2020 or 2024, I try not to look too far out because all immersion is lost if I do.

Never said FSX was much better.

Ok that's great, now as Sethos asked can you give any examples of how you think it should look (per other sim screenshots and/or IRL photos)? As some others have said, unfortunately the screenshots you've posted don't seem to show the issues you claim AFAICS.

Is this an adequate image of buildings 13 miles away? They're blurry and melting. It needs to be improved, very simple.

For some, their fanaticism won't allow for a constructive discussion.

Not sure about how it can be improved as I have no tech background, but how about fixing the lighting and resolution of buildings from greater distances?

Wow, just because some people don't recognize/have the problem while others have documented it, and even though you recognize that there are places in the MSFS with very poor ground textures, it's not worth looking into or fixing? With this type of mentality, nothing will get fixed or improved.

Some areas have poor textures - of course we all hope the whole world will have great textures.

The point is MSFS itself doesn't need fixing because if the area has good textures, it displays those textures sharp, way off into the distance

I think the original poster actually made a point of variable texture quality, rather than MSFS display blurred textures.

I think part of the problem here is hardware limitations. In MSFS2020 I tested TLOD flying over Manhattan at 3000ft. At a TLOD of approximately 200, the nearby PG buildings were fully rendered. However - I needed a TLOD of 600 IIRC for the PG buildings in the far distance to be fully rendered. There’s a video on my channel demonstrating this.

A TLOD of 600 at 3000ft over Manhattan is simply not realistic with current hardware. Compromises have to be made.

In terms of haziness in the far distance in 2024 vs 2020, I guess that comes down to some sort of atmospheric effects, Rayleigh scattering perhaps? I’m not sure, and to be honest haven’t noticed it until you brought it up in this thread.

And I have yet to see a screen shot of those cities in MSFS 2020 and 2024. There is a reason why you haven’t share then, because it validates my point.

Simple request:

- Take off from JFK (31L) using Fénix or PMDG 737

- Set weather conditions to “clear skies.”

- At 2000 feet, you will observe the Big Apple.

- Take a frontal view of those buildings and share it with us. Keep in mind that you have to be 13 miles away (shortly after take off)

- Show us the wonder  of 2024 (or 2020) from a good distance away.

There’s no point in this exercise though. I could do it, spend some 30 mins or whatever time it takes to post screenshots from two sims. But I already know the answer: unless TLOD is set very high, Manhattan skyscrapers are going to look blurry from 13 miles away. And even with my hardware, there’s no way I can takeoff from JFK 31L with a TLOD of 600 without having a word not allowed stutterfest.

I’m not even sure if we’re discussing PG or autogen buildings here. Maybe both? Maybe neither? This thread is confusing as hell.

I don’t need to prove in any way that MSFS is better than xyz sim, or that 2024 is better than 2020. I couldn’t care less. It works for me, that’s all I care about.

You keep going on about fanaticism etc.. How about sticking to the topic in order to foster a "constructive" discussion. You've been asked twice now, guess you don't have screenshots from other sims where you think this is done better?

I don't think there is anything we can do to alter the OP's opinion. He isn't happy with how NYC looks from 13 miles away. Piet also posted the technical reasons why NYC looks horrid from 13 miles away.

I can live with it; Huascar can't. No current hardware can make NYC look crisp from 13 miles away.

Do I wish NYC looked crisp from 13 miles away? Yes. Is there anything I can do about it currently? Nope.

He feels the way he does. There really isn't a solution other than hoping MS makes it better.

I am waiting for someone to start a thread complaining about the size and colors of the pebbles. 😄

@Huascar

I have no idea why you keep on like this. You stated earlier that you got a refund from Asobo/Microsoft. For you: case closed.

I, personally, have 0,0000 interest in changing your mind. So, NYC doesn't look "crisp" from 13 miles away? Hold the presses!

I prefer to spend what little time I have actually flying.

I suppose others have different priorities.

You think it looks bad. I think it looks good. There's that. Now what?

I think the clouds are not realistic like they were at MSFS2020 release. Oh well. Get over it, like you said, "it's a game!"

I just took off from KLGA, and I grew up 2 miles from that airport, and flew over Manhattan on my way to KDTW. Looked fine to me.
