PMDG update re: MSFS 2024 SU1

Featured Replies

Why on earth would someone try to imply they are going to "sit it out" for 6 months when they have actively stated they are already working on things.

If you load it as is in it's 2020 state it will have graphical issues and may have performance issues (pretty much the same as when Fenix release the 320 to 2024 at 1st)  But if they take the 2020 version and re-build it with the 2024 SDK and then fix any remaining issues then the 2020 "port" will work fine.

Subsequent to that could be a FULL 2024 re-write with the native 2024 features.

But in no way are they waiting six months to start on 2024 LOL  They've been saying they were waiting for troubleshooting tools which they now have and have already begun testing things as soon as they did/

They are really exactly where Fenix was 2 months ago but I'm "guessing" because of Marketplace only PC users can even "try" the PMDG models for now.  I'm guessing all of their existing birds are working in compatibility mode within 6 months...

I find it amusing that people who spend thousands on a gaming rig, including the most expensive graphics card money can buy, complain about paying a modest fee for improvements to an aircraft model.

  • Fenix charged zero and they got it to work when MSFS24 was released.

When I read the word salad I just think to myself how much money they gonna shake out of me this time.

What they say doesn’t matter. They are coming up with ways to sell us all more “upgrades”.

And you know what, I don’t blame them. If I was the gold standard monopoly (and their planes are uniformly excellent) on Boeing in MSFS, I’d do the same.

It’s not rational to do otherwise, they aren’t our pals, they are a successful business that needs to remain successful.

However, this has most definitely opened the door for another dev to make a good Boeing and beat PMDG to market - like iFly did.

Competition is assuredly heading PMDGs way, and us consumers will be the eventual winner. I won’t be buying the Max from PMDG for example.

Looking at the PMDG post and another similar one posted yesterday, a "compatibility update" is major work.  If they release a B737 compatibility update now, they would have to repeat this work with the "new stuff", i.e., two major development/testing cycles, one without the updates and one with the new updates.  With the B777, it's just a single cycle, all the functionality/features are already in the product.  It's an issue of resource management.

My understanding from following RSR’s posts over the last while is that the current NG will be made compatible with 2024 but there will be an updated version with new model, textures and sounds for not much cost.

Don’t hold me to this but that is how I read it.

Correct.  This is the reason they are not doing a compatibility update for the B737.  The development/testing work would be wasted since this version will be replaced by the upgraded B737, which will require a development/testing cycle of its own.

Yeah they are totally aiming to charge people again for 2024.

Still not clear to me if this is mostly a compatibility exercise they're first undertaking or if they're also planning to take advantage of 2024's new capabilities and improvements 🤔

Bravo to RR for making that statement.

From his comments, he's talking about fixing issues with v2024, which implies a Compatible release rather than a "Premium" release (to use iB's terminology).

Great news that the -ER is still coming for MSFS. My favorite 777 to pair with the magnificent MD-11 and later on the A350 and (hopefully) the 767.

Fenix runs the entire aircraft outside the sim, though, in a whole separate process. They're much less dependent on MSFS than developers like PMDG who develop their planes to run natively within the simulator without an external process running the whole thing. Different approaches entirely.

PMDG documented and spoke publicly as to what was broken in the retail version of MSFS 2024 that prevented them from even making progress on a compatibility update, issues that thankfully appear to be resolved in SU1.

Seems pretty clear to me , what he said. If they just patch the PMDG 737 so it can load into 2024, it will probably work like word not allowed and look the same. It apparently needs a complete rewrite.

get your walllets out lads.

Yes and there are too many commentators ignoring that fact so that they can keep hijacking every thread on PMDG to cause trouble.

Hopefully we’ll get some clarity from RSR (is that an oxymoron?) on whether we’ll get a relatively quick compatibility fix for the 737s before a full enhanced 737.  The comments in this thread demonstrate how this has been interpreted by people on either side of the question differently and quite confidently.

It struck me today that if we’re on a recurring 4 year cycle of MSFS releases, and if each one introduces the level of change for some devs like 2024 did, we’ll likely never have a sim with all of PMDG’s core addons (737 777 747…DC6?) properly working at the same time given their development timeframes, nevermind any secret projects or whatever else they might drop hints about.

From what I read, I think he's saying SU1 beta now allows you to drop their planes in with SOME functionality and a lot of wonkiness so they need to do some work to get the planes compatible. SU1 allows them to do this so barring any unforeseen roadblocks, they should be able to do so soon. Personally, I don't anticipate them charging extra for this.

I have heard nothing but good things about iFly and their plane(s).

I am with you there. Likely going to going skip upgrades and get the ifly
