Sim Update 5 [1.7.27.0] Now Available | MSFS 2024

Featured Replies

Well, so far I'm extremely happy with the update.  A couple of things I'm seeing (early days - hours really - so pls apply appropriate salt grains)...

VRAM usage seems to have improved a bit.  Since I'm still using an 8GB video card, I'm pretty sensitive to this.  So far, I've been able to move Texture Resolution (the single most important setting if you have VRAM limitations) up a notch and still stay "in bounds" in areas that were formally problematic for me at this setting.  Time will tell if this is real or just luck.

I'm seeing considerably more traffic at regional airports than I was previously (MSFS, not third party injection).  Perhaps it's a function of coming up to the weekend and first day of a new release, but the difference has been noticeable so far.  Will be interested to see if this holds.

And as others have noted, things just seem a bit smoother overall.  I've rarely experienced the stutters that some deal with so we're talking subtle differences here, but it's very pleasing.  This one, I'll admit, could well be placebo, however.

Did have a minor issue where the launcher CTD'd on the first try, but that has not repeated.

Yep, overall quite pleased.

As a guy who spends every six months in Level D sims, the weather  in 2024 is miles better than how it looks in a real sim.  First off there is no live weather in a real sim, so it’s all presets.

I never do that.  Just install it.

My complaint was more to do with FSLTL models.  I guess that's not Asobo's problem and I should only complain that side in future.

Mad that we are flying around photoreal renditions of the entire earth in study level aircraft, with a picture that looks astonishing, yet we cannot solve AI traffic floating in with no wheels until short final.

The intro video was made at least two years ago using a pre-release WIP build of MSFS 2024 and does not reflect the current release state, so any footage you see in that video is not applicable to the current version of the sim.

With no horse in this race, as someone who got 2024 in the past weeks on the recent steam sale, I find this statement a little underwhelming; surely it wouldn't be difficult to redo the intro video with a current representation of the product? This isn't early access - if the game's intro is showing us footage that doesn't represent the game, isn't that intentionally misleading? Of course, I get that there's "bigger fish to fry" - like the ATC taxi bug that softlocks the PPL mission (Still there years later apparently as it happened to me last week, causing a bad impression of career mode on only the second mission of the game). Just my 2 cents

MSI Aegis R | Intel i7-14700F | NVIDIA RTX 4060 | 1TB NVMe | 32GB RAM | Windows 11

Some new Bells and Whistles to attract us to the sim.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think we'll EVER get any kind of "visual" weather updates in MSFS2024, even Seb said it himself. I believe they have mentioned that there are limitations in the engine that will prevent that. And, much like prior dev updates they skirted around the question about true "visual" cloud and visibility updates and instead pushed that they implemented up/down drafts inside of a storm cloud and weather radar improvements. That's great and all, but the problem with that is #1 storm clouds (i.e. supercells or stand alone high top thunderstorms) are non-existant in live weather and #2 even if using a storm as a preset the turbulence effect is not strong at all. So what is the point in an improved 3d weather radar if there are no realistic storms to avoid anyway? Cloud tops 10k? Blahh.

Don't get me wrong, it was still great to hear them again and they are trying to improve what they can. I just don't think it's possible within the limits of the current engine, and sharing the code with x-box performance limitations.

The weather engine itself is certainly capable of depicting/rendering varied weather and dense clouds etc, as seen when using manually configured weather. Not sure what limitations there would be to keep increasing this core weather engine in terms of visual capabilities. I don't buy this overused xbox argument since the sim caters to all kinds of hardware including PCs equivalent or lesser than xbox hardware even. The key is that sim visual fidelity settings are fixed and restricted for xbox (to match hardware) while for PC we're free to increase detail settings etc.

The issue IMO is live weather and how they blend global and METAR weather data to then render in the weather engine. That's where improvements would be welcome, either in data source and/or the blending of global and METAR data (it's the latter that was introduced in MSFS 2020 SU7 and "regressed" live weather from prior to that).

Re: storm turbulence, as some others have noted during the SU5 beta, and as stated by Seb in the last Q&A, I can definitely see improvements for the GA aircraft I usually fly when using manual weather and storms. Need to try in live weather when I next encounter such dangerous weather. Also as some have said, the aircraft turbulence in storms and dangerous weather sometimes doesn't work as well for larger aircraft vs smaller aircraft apparently (so could be a separate bug).

Asobo, presumably at the instruction of MS, have a vision of how MSFS should be "played" and what features matter.

Gamification and funnelling people to the marketplace matter, other things not so much

Oh ok, I guess "gamification" is why they keep pushing out these AAU updates with high fidelity aircraft and avionics, bother with computation fluid dynamics in flight models and airflow modelling, and bother with improving the accuracy of ground effect for helicopters, bothering with all those other flight dynamics improvements from 2020->2024, etc etc 🙃

Just loaded a flight with the new update.   I spawn on the ground next to the jet as always.  Shift-C doesn't get me into the cockpit.   Hit escape to see if a control binding was changed, nothing happens.   The keyboard doesn't seem to work at all.   Am I missing something here?     Using the Fenix A319, if that matters.

This is a known problem that I now get about every alternate day. It drives me mad.  It usually takes 2 restarts of the sim for the keyboard functions to start working again.   Eg. The next restart after the problem, the key functions still won't work and on the 3rd restart they will.

Some say unplugging your keyboard's USB plug and reinserting it, gets the keyboard working again for them. That has never made any difference for me.   Restarts are always required.

It used to happen about once a month for me with MSFS2020.  Then, when 2024 launched I never had the problem for months.  It then started happening very regularly again, after the last update (SU4).

First proper flight tonight with SU5 (messed about yesterday);

  • VR click spots issue is a PITA, how they can't see what they're doing here is beyond me, bit of a joke this constant need to regress in areas really, especially when it comes to basic mouse usage.
  • Being able to fly at night now that they fixed the year old artefacts issue with AMD 9 series cards is great, not great that it took a year to fix but ya know....Asobo! Used the Dark Streets mod but it's been so long since I've flown at night I can't actually remember what the default is like, still it looked pretty decent all round.
  • EFB being a"normal" size in VR, again something broken since release, is albeit welcomed. Not without it's issues though as the map kept flickering so ended up turning it off entirely and just using Sky4Sim.
  • Cessna Caravan ground physics improvements have dramatically changed the behaviour of this aircraft during Taxi, no idea if it's life like or not and whether i need to adjust my rudder settings, but it was a handful to say the least!
  • The all important Performance; wasn't overly great with constant dips below my desired 45fps. AutoFPS in use and settings changed to accommodate the FSLTL change so perhaps some tweaking my end is required. It usually needs a tweak here or there after an update so I'll persevere with that.
  • Noticed a few pop-up dialog boxes QoL changes, the toolbar has a faded background which OK but i never had a problem with the old one. VR menu screen is a bit in your face, be good to let the user adjust this themselves.

Overall and after reading through the patch notes this does read like another Update to "fix" the dreadful release, so that's 5 updates now but to be fair there's a lot of new little things included in this update. So hopefully from SU6 they can start looking forward a bit more, add some more wish list items in and what not.

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

I'm getting crazy CPU spikes in and around LA. No issue during SU4. Personally I don't see a huge increase in performance compared to SU4. I'll give a few days because maybe the servers are overloaded but so far I can't see I'm impressed with SU5/

Ground textures at cruise are really bad for me - they aren't normally great to be honest, but there's been a marked decrease in quality. Maybe that's where the performance/VRAM usage improvements have been coming from. Sigh.

Yes, the eagle-eyed amongst us have noticed yet another downgrade. It's subtle but it's absolutely there.  Just a lack of crispness all around...  I've had to whack up the artificial sharpening.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but is anyone else seeing their graphic settings resetting every time you close out the sim? This is the third time I've fired up MSFS2024 after the update and have had to redo my graphic settings. It's not the end of the world, but pretty annoying. I'm not using AutoFPS, which I know can mess with them.

I still use 2020 legacy key bindings, so what I do is every time I spawn, I switch over to 2020 controls, use W to take a step forward and that allows me to SHIFT+C into the cockpit. Works every time. Really annoying, but it works.

No issues on my end. double check your settings.

Are you on an nvidia card? Make sure the Nvidia app isn't set to optimize your settings.
