whats about the ridicously wrong snow coverage in the Alps? Its there since snow was introduced in MSFS2020, several times discussed in Q&A sessions, has a bug thread with over 900 votes yet it is radio silence about it.

It's already been explained.

Yes, the eagle-eyed amongst us have noticed yet another downgrade. It's subtle but it's absolutely there.

I haven't noticed any difference between SU4 and SU5.

As a guy who spends every six months in Level D sims, the weather  in 2024 is miles better than how it looks in a real sim.  First off there is no live weather in a real sim, so it’s all presets.

Having read a number of pages on this post, I often get the impression some people on Avsim are more interested in complaining for the sake of complaining.  I just did 4 flights since SU5 came ou

I never do that.  Just install it.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think we'll EVER get any kind of "visual" weather updates in MSFS2024, even Seb said it himself.

I gave you the better part of the day to show something so I'll clear this up now. Seb never said anything like this. What was said on the last Q&A was that limitations of the data used for live weather, prevents them from placing a cloud, rain etc in the exact spot it would be in real life. This, of course is more than reasonable. He never said anything about the data provider limiting their ability to improve the way clouds look. On the contrary, he has said that a rewrite of the live weather algorithm would allow them to depict thunder storms that look the part and so on.

This is my CPU usage over LA which lasted for a good 2 mins. I had to end the game via task manager because my PC was about to melt. You would think with SU5 we'll be moving foward but instead we're going 10 steps back. I just can't figure out how we have a stable version and the team goes and messes it up again with these service updates.

I have a worse CPU than you and have not experienced this in SU5.

Yep you got me there Krakin - so what I swear that I thought I listened to, I guess I didn't have enough coffee that day. I went through literally the last 4 or 5 dev updates insisting he said that... but you are correct. Sorry about that. But I can say for sure after watching many of dev updates today that he has been consistent in saying "once the bugs are mostly cleared up", and "keep voting on the wishlist", "get it to the top of the wishlist".

How can they address something that isn't their fault?.

Quit carrying Asobo and MS water, it’s a bad look. They subcontract that out, hence they are responsible for ensuring their contracted vendors provide accurate data. If they don’t, they deserve the complaints.

Man, last night after I updated to SU5, I had probably one of the best flights I've had in a while, but it was at like midnight here in Chicago. No scenery popping. No stuttering. I swear, it was blissful. So I got home from work tonight pumped to have the same experience and it was drastically different. Scenery popping and stutters I haven't seen for a while. Literally nothing has changed in my settings. My only thought is that it has to be high server load. The update came out yesterday afternoon (here), so most of Europe was sleeping or about to. I'm just scratching my head how I could have one of the most enjoyable flight sim experiences I've ever had (over 30 years) to the next evening experiencing one of my worst.

I have had mixed results with SU5 and in a way I wish I could just go back to SU4.  Everyone has different results and some of it is probably down to system specs but for me its a few steps back.  Some of the positives I have noticed is the Dawn and Dusk lighting seems improved and last night I noticed the sun shining through the trees and made a nice shadow on the runway.  Maybe this is not new but 1st time I have noticed it was with SU5?  At the airport textures seem sharper than before and I notice less ghosting than before.  At first when I fired up SU5 for the 1st time I was pretty excited for what I was seeing.  However this morning I did my 1st flight and this time I noticed some pretty bad issues.  Above a few thousand feet my ground textures are way more blurry than before.  In SU4 I had pretty good looking textures.  Not perfect but definitely very tolerable.  Same for the trees in SU4 most rendered correctly and now most of them look like green rocks.  Honestly at the moment its not a very good experience.

The worst thing is at 36,000 feet my clouds looked very hazy and have this snow effect in them like on a old TV not tuned to a channel showing a much of snow on the screen.  I occasionally had this before but its way worse in SU5.  Also I am still getting many lines in the water and this was supposedly fixed.  Performance however is of coarse very good even on my slightly dated system.

I have noticed an improvement in the UI menu system.  Before SU4 it was pretty bad and seemed to suffer from memory leakage issues.  SU4 improved things greatly but was still not perfect.  Now its pretty smooth and I no longer get those funny pops and clicks from my speakers when I use the system.

For the record I have not had the time to go in and have a look at my user settings.  Its very possible they have been downgraded when I installed SU5 and that putting in my tweaks that I have done will improve the looks.  Hopefully this is all it is.  Also I feel SU5 has done a good job of reminding me that my 2021 build PC is now slipping into lower spec category.  A new system is the forecast in the Fall but it worked pretty solid before!

I assume that everyone that is having issues with SU 5 have dialed back their community folder and add ons and are flying with a default vanilla set up? How else can you determine if it is the update, or the addons that you have installed, have yet to be patched to handle SU 5?

Cheers

Steve Hall

I posted this on the hardware forum but I wanted to try getting help here.

So I wanted to do a free flight with the new SU5 update and after doing a controllers check I noticed that I had no elevator or ailerons control. I went into "Settings" and "Controllers" and noticed that my Fulcrum Yoke was not being recognized. I also have a tiller control that also it's not being recognized. Has anyone here gone thru the same issues and have been able to fix it?

The two devices show under Windows USB Game Controller Setup and they work normally.

So, saying that meteoblue simply doesnt provide the data with enough resolution is an explanation to you? You are happy with quiet nothing... besides the fact that this is a (valid) assumption by the userbase, never an official statement by Asobo. Besides the fact that meteoblue HAS the necessary resolution, which can be checked on their page.

We are now years into snow coverage and nothing has been done about it. No official com, nothing. That is what drives me nuts, not even the fact that there was done nothing specifically in SU5...

Ground textures at cruise are really bad for me - they aren't normally great to be honest, but there's been a marked decrease in quality. Maybe that's where the performance/VRAM usage improvements have been coming from. Sigh.

Totally  agree. They have downgraded the sim.

I'm just annoyed as the next guy about the ongoing issues with snow coverage, but at least there is a workaround for those of us who have Active Sky.

I bought it mainly to be able to have historical weather for Simbrief planning and use it mainly in passive mode. But in Active mode it comes with its own snow coverage data and that is way more accurate than the one of Meteoblue and it gets rid of the problem wieh valleys being full of snow that aren't in reality.
