Time to enjoy what you have

Featured Replies

I'd like to offer a third perspective on this.

For many of us tinkering with the settings and the config files is fun! It's not always about getting a perfect result and leave it be, part of it is the enjoyment of changing things and see what you can achieve.

Many of us like to build our own computers, make it the best it can be within the budget. Some like tweaking everything down to the smallest detail in obscure software most people don't even know exists. Or creating the software or mods yourself.
The process itself can be a treat if you're that kind of person.

That is as long as you can get the sim to run great and not be troubled with CTDs and such.

Lots of truth there Pinta_a   I'm comparing MSFS2020 to the 1988 version and later, so I'm amazed and couldn't ask for more.

They're comparing it to today's video games, which I can't even play, because my hand/eye coordination is not good enough..

There is no way I could type on a mobile phone using my thumbs.  👎

I think no matter what Asobo does, there are a small group of people that will act like something missing is the end of the world. A terminal building with bathrooms, but the toilets don't flush for instance, would be an example. It will never satisfy the glass is half empty crowd.

This is possible, as in all things in life.

But I am sure that you see the  difference between broken terminal toilets and broken weather, or broken atc, or popping trees, and so on.

Ah well. It was good while it lasted.

I disagree. It was not good at all.

With all due respect to the OP, that's not what I and many others think, and a Forum like this one is the place where different opinions, preferences, personalities meet, not the place where only those who agree with the mainstream opinion are welcome.

And this is where i will step in and say while this is indeed a forum and everyone is free to do as they please. Better judgement can be used to read the thread to see when it is most appropriate to throw an objection. This thread in my humble opinion was not one of them.

We agree on alot of things wrong about the sim for the most part. But for the people who rarely post and are  genuinely enjoying the sim and are not yanking the chains of people with real problems with the sim I say sit back and let them have their moment. Some of us have made enough noise with the problems .. take some time to appreciate that there can be still fun to be had in the hobby.

I personally refrain from crapping on the positive threads .. even if the thread was some obvious reactionary BS from a complaint thread. This thread is about a fellow simmer who has been with the franchise and seen it grow from the start and appreciates where it was in the past and where it is presently from all these years.

Appreciate the moment.

As far as I am concerned the "popping trees" and the toilet that won't flush are on a par with each other. BTW, I don't see popping trees, am I doing something wrong?

Well, I'll be 85 in January and I agree with Roy also. To those who complain about the "gripers" - think about it - the main purpose of any forum and especially Avsim is to provide help and information. So, a great many of our users are needing help which means they are having a problem. If all the people who are NOT having a problem were to post, we'd just have a good old boy network.

I know that MS, Lockheed Martin and Asobo watch these forums regularly to get a consensus of what the issues are. As with any medium of this type you really need to toss away the extremes on either end and look at the average comment.

In that respect, I believe that Avsim and it's users provide a balanced output of the feelings about MSFS, so while I agree with Roy ( I am one who has very few issues) I urge those who do have issues to bring them up. You never know who might be reading your post.  🙂

I was glad to read what you posted; these are my sentiments exactly.

And I am even more happy to see the overwhelming number of likes your post has received so far. That puts things into perspective and proves that the good handful of posters who keep filling up this forum with their negativity are really just a small - but loud - minority.

Don't get me wrong, nothing against constructive criticism which helps to improve the sim. But what is going on here (and on the official MSFS forum as well) in large parts has nothing to do with constructive criticism at all.

Roy, I totally agree with the gist of your post!

But as always, it is not black and white.

I am enjoying MSFS immensely, at the same time I like to complain about items that are immersion killers, or items that have not been fixed since the birth of MSFS a short 14 months ago.

There is also the very important point that if humanity would have always been 'enjoying what they have' and not strive for the 'better' we would not have come very far...

Lets enjoy our cave - who needs houses.....

At least for me MSFS could be so much better. The last year plus we basically got no new features, just a constant stream of 'fixes' with no end in sight. Yes, we got world updates, but I honestly do not care to much about POIs.

The new bespoke airports are great, while at the very same airports kamikaze vehicles and taxi lights installed by a mad man kill the immersion.... for example...

I am enjoying MSFS, but at the same time I use my freedom to complain and 'demand' better.

Much respect and all the best from Canada.

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

I do as well. That is what a forum is great for. Lasting, searchable solutions to problems. Just not interested in hearing them regurgitated in Every thread, especially ones where the topic has nothing to do with them. Especially in one like this where someone takes the time to write something that makes them happy and they just want to share their feelings with others. Like I said in a previous thread - pathetic

Where I differ, is that if somebody is legitimately asking for help, I and many others, I'm certain, will attempt to provide one, if a possible solution is available/known/ or can even be guessed at.

What I myself have less empathy for is capital letter, exclamation-point-heavy screeds, on the total uselessness of the sim, the incompetence of Asobo, and possibly its dark, sinister plans to secretly nerf, dumb-down (choose one) the sim in favor of the infamous Xbox. Etc, etc.

To me, those aren't requests for help, they're just plain old rants.

For a while, the forum seemed full of that, and became an unpleasant place to visit, but predictably, as more and more people use and adjust to the sim and its idiosyncrasies, you're seeing stronger and stronger pushback on anything that seems like habitualized bashing.

Which is to say it's becoming like any of the other subforum's on Avsim, where people come to enjoy talking about their sims of choice.

Rather than hearing again and again that Lockheed Martin Stinks, and that Austin is clueless and Xplane has only months to live.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I for one became obsessed with the Download:  Hundreds and hundreds of aircraft over the past 20 years or so, numerous liveries, plus dozens and dozens of sceneries.  Of course, the download cycle repeated itself after each new flight sim was introduced..

Well, like Mr. Warren put it so well:  Why can't I just be happy to get in a darn plane and take off for parts unknown, and not wait for the next shiny object to add to my collection, and then complain it it was not up to snuff...

Best post I have read on Avsim. Still only one year old, and the best has yet to come, so come along for the ride.

It wasn't but a few days post inital release went by before the incessant need to tweak, install mods, install to different folders than default, starting appearing all a lot of legacy behavior from prior sims in large part.  I've kept MSFS essentially stock w/ just a recent addition the HD 787 mod, and am so happy to be largely done with trying to put lipstick on a pig and fix this that and the other thing w/ affinity masks, this .cfg line or that.  I really am enjoying the KISS model.  It just works.  No CTD post WU6, and few before that with daily flying.  I'm a Store user and have never had any real problems with it until once Process Lasso (legacy from P3D use) was preventing MSFS from loading, so i got fooled into a complete uninstall/reinstall of MSFS, before learning it was a conflict w/ PL.  But it took almost nothing, but time, to complete the uninstall reinstall, of all that scenery and capability.  The default planes can be very decent too.  I look most forward to the mentioned weather update coming next year sometime.

I completely agree and understand your perspective too. Sometimes you just want stuff to work. I took a break from flight sim around 2016 due to moving to a smaller apartment. I got back into it last year due to the release of MSFS 2020. So I went directly from FSX with the insane amount of tweaking and modding needed to get it stable and performing well, to MSFS 2020 which is a much more complete and smoother sim directly out of the box. Right now after SU5 and WU6 with hotfix, it's the best the sim has ever been. Except for the tree distance bug. But instead of being satisfied with how things are, the more stable sim has made me venture into config files, settings and mods like never before. And I'm having fun with it.
