Stuck on "Checking for updates..."

Featured Replies

Obviously late to this thread here. I have had this "stuck on updates" a few times since the initial launch. I just "force quit" the sim and re-start the computer and all is fine. I somehow think it is a timing issue with the servers when launching the sim.

Message to Microsoft...you took the money now up your server capacity to provide the service so many paid for (all my other connectivity dependent stuff is doing fine)

  • For me that worked one time. But when the problem recurred next time it did not work. For me it seem more of a random event if we get stuck at checking for updates

So I did another uninstall/reinstall. Now the game crashes 2/3 into the loading screen. Community folder empty, lastest nvdia driver installed. This is getting rediculous. Anybody else getting CTD's?

They must have worked on something in the wee hours of the night. The game loaded properly, no hang at checking updates, and no CTD. Wonder if they will share with us what happened.

Something strange about that on and off again server slowdowns recently. I say this because there was no big update happening to cause a rush of more players than normal.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Spoke too soon. Just finished up a flight from KEWR to KATL. Shut the game down and tried to load it back up. It's stuck on checking for updates AGAIN. How frustrating

Update. After 10-12 minutes of checking for updates, the game loaded in and worked properly. Hopefully they figure it out.

They've set up a survey on the official forums for those experiencing the issues

I stopped the 'Game Bar' processes and it broke me out of the cycle.

Happened here several times now, I´ll go that Xbox thing (which I hate) and notice every time that I´m not logged in. Log in and then MSFS 2020 opens normally.

Always run the Windows Store app before MSFS.  It will update the XBOX app and get you logged back in.

It would be kind of embarrassing to admit that Joe @ Azure spilled his Hi-C onto Server Rack #542.

I got the checking for updates today. Waited about 10 seconds, shut down MSFS, restarted and everything fine..

Worked for me several times. But also did not work at all several other times 😉 It is a lottery currently, sometimes syncing time helps, sometime logging in and out of Xbox apps help, sometimes killing MSFS and restarting helps, sometimes it needs an additional reboot, sometimes just waiting for 10 Minutes does the trick and sometimes none of the above works. Absolutely annoying, because you never know which situation it is.

Besides this: in the official forums several user report huge ongoing traffic during the time they are stuck in the checking for updates screen. Something is really wrong here and the absolute silence from the devs is irritating tbh. For the moment it looks like it is an issue not at all under control from the devs

It'll be embarrassing if this happens during the FSExpo demonstrations 😬

Try to mimic my luck:

-Disable Frame Generation mod and replace it with Lossless Scaling

-go back to DX11

- Deactivate all default AI traffic and replace it with FSLTL

- Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU

-using MSFS Addon Linker disable everything (both planes and airports) you're not using at the moment

One of these should fix you! Hopefully!

This issue is now so widespread that it's more likely that it was chance which led to your successful restart, not any one or more of your troubleshooting steps 😕
