MSFS 24 SU2 released

For me as a VR user I can finally call up and get rid of the VR toolbar at will and also use the EFB and performance seems really smooth.

Things I’m not liking though is airfield night lighting, specifically the PAPIS just 4 massive red lights , when on profile smaller white lights will partially eclipse the red lights which remain, it’s rubbish.

Also I’ve noticed almost like a wave of terrain morphing and scenery details popping into view about a mile ahead of the aircraft , like sections of reflecting water on a river appearing in 1/4 mile chunks as the aircraft travels along. I’ve seen that before but thought I’d got rid of it so suspect some settings have been altered, any idea what setting I need to change to get rid of this rendering wave or push it way out to the distance where it won’t offend me ?

Being part of the SU2 beta was not a negative experience for me.  From day one through two thirds of the beta I couldn't run SU2 successfully for more than a minute.  Often the sim would crash before

It's funny reading the thread since I've already been on the beta hehe. I submitted quite a few bugs and I know others have to. SU2 is a good step in the right direction for msfs 2024.  It's

*tries again via gamepass*

*get like 6fps in the Fenix at Heathrow*

this sim is just diabolical for me

I'm finding some interesting things as I tinker around trying to reclaim my smooth performance from pre-SU1. I'm almost there again.
Before SU2 I used MSI Afterburner and RTSS to stay locked at 60FPS with FG (so 30 native, with x2 FG). I had perfectly smooth performance everywhere, even when panning and switching views. Was beautiful.
Running a 9800X3D OC to 5.4GHz, 64GB DDR5 6000MHz RAM and a 4090 with MSFS24 on a dedicated PCIE4 M.2 drive. Used DLSS Quality, and DLSS Frame Gen.

With SU2 and no settings changed I was having terrible stuttering even when in a default aircraft at a default airport, no traffic just sitting there doing nothing. FPS would be steady and then suddenly start dropping and stuttering before going back to smooth again, before it would happen again and rinse and repeat.
My DLSS and FG dll files are the latest, also installed the latest FSR dll. All shader caches cleared, and rolling cache deleted and rebuilt. Tried the latest NVIDIA driver and also rolled back to my previous one, and no difference so not a driver issue. Reinstalled the latest one again.
I found that by switching Frame Gen to AMD FSR that I removed that stuttering I was getting with DLSS Frame Gen, and sitting there stationary I had my old smooth 60FPS back and it would stay there.
I did still get some stuttering when changing views, ie inside to external or when resetting my view after looking at the overhead or pedestal. Also some occasional stutters while panning around, but certainly miles better than I was getting with the NVIDIA DLSS Frame Gen, where I would see FPS drops down to 35 and heavy stutters.

Today I tried the Frame Limiter setting in the Usercfg.opt. I set it to 30 so that would give me my 60 with x2 Frame Gen.
No real change with AMD FSR, was largely smooth except in the circumstances I mentioned previously.
What surprised me though was when I changed to NVIDIA DLSS Frame Gen the horrible stuttering and performance I had yesterday was gone. It was back to being just as smooth if not slightly better than the AMD FSR.
So I shut the sim down, reset the Limiter to 0 in the cfg and tried again. Sure enough the stuttery poor performance was back.
Just to make sure, set the Limiter back to 30 again and fired up the sim and sure enough nice smooth performance like I was getting in SU1. With the view steady its exactly like it used to be, smooth, steady 60FPS with constant frame times. Again changing views and panning isn't as good as it was in SU1, still get some minor stuttering, but at least I have almost got back to where I was.

Just posting my findings in case it might help someone else that is struggling with stuttery performance in SU2.

SU2 runs good till landing.  Smooth stutter free flight, then on approach at approx 500Ft, starts to stutter. FPS still holding at 90 FPS.  During taxi in panning is very choppy.  No such issues during taxi out prior to takeoff. Happens at all airports, 3rd party and default.  Also any aircraft, Fenix, A2a or default.  Running 9800x3d and 7900 xtx with 64gb of ram.  Other than that, I like SU2.

One thing I'm seeing is a significant regression in high cloud layer performance. That high level cloud layer has never been great, but with a 13900k/4090/64GBs, it's crazy that flying through this high level cloud layer causes me to lose 30+ FPS. Went from the high 90s to the 50s. Doesn't happen when I'm climbing or descending through cloud layers. Just the high level clouds - again, I've seen a performance decrease with this even with 2020, but never this drastic.  I created a thread to see if we can get some improvement here. https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/cloud-performance-regression-high-level/721214

This fix might help you too then if you have a similar setup. Something has changed in SU2 with regards to how the sim processes monitor refresh rate. I don't know what but I have found a fix for these new 'SU2 juddery stutters'.

weird question:

previously when starting MSFS24 the earth was centered on the Galapagos Islands. with SU2 it now centers on Indian Ocean west of Indonesia. Is there a way to change this? can't MSFS simply take that homefield you entered when starting the careermode?

empty COMMUNITY and report back.

perhaps there are conflicting, non compatible/non optimized airports or sceneries nearby causing those effects?

very nice.

Trying 2024 today, for the first time in a few months.  Clicked the launch icon, and watched the status bar at the bottom slowly progress.  After a bit, I got a main screen that showed accessibility or start, or exit to desktop.   when I click on the start, nothing happens.  I have no mouse or keyboard control.  I left it this way for a few minutes, and nothing, so I then killed off the app.  tried again, same results.

Since I knew I would be getting the SU2 update, I moved my community folder out of the way prior.

current rig:  W11, RTX4090, 64GB, 13900K.  Using nVidia driver 566.36

Any suggestions?

Nvidia driver 576.40 (released a few days ago) is very stable for my 5090 and since your driver they definitely have done some MSFS specific tweaks so consider getting the latest driver. Before that driver I was on 572.83 (due to crashing in Monster Hunter Wilds, which was fixed with the latest driver).  Could try that.

I dont get my 97% loading stuck issue fully resolved: it happens, I kill the sim via taskmanager, disable all addons that I use via AddonLinker (80% are installed regularly via their installer/manager)and then it works. Then I enable the addons again via AddonLinker and it works. Then, some hours later, again stuck at 97% and the same round starts again...

I'll take a look at 576.40.  I figured most of the recent driver updates were just focused on 5xxx cards, whereas I have a 4090.  but maybe worth a shot.  thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the tip. I only run a single monitor and no head tracking, but gave it a try. My monitor is 144Hz native. Tried at 120 and 60 and no real noticeable change. Perhaps marginally better at 120Hz when resetting the cockpit view.

just tried with the 576.40 and same issue that I noted below...  bummer

Well, for me, the MSFS2024 control scheme is now worse than it ever was. I can no longer get my Tobii to work at all. I know all the work arounds and they do not work either. Also, it now takes around 45 seconds on my PC to switch from one control settings profile to another.  Further, when I type the specific name of a control in the search field, it no longer pulls up the control, but rather just the main list of all the categories. Useless. Also, anytime you add or change a control, then it takes another 45 seconds to process the change. It takes so much longer to tweak and adjust controls now. And yes, I have done all the shader cleanout etc. Before this SU2 was released, my 2024 was working pretty well. Tobii was working, controls were all working. Never in the beta. Now, this....
